Abstract
Water sol. linear, high mol. wt. polymers are prepd. by irradiating an aq. soln. of 10-60 wt.% of a water-sol ethylenically unsatd. monomer(s) of formula: (where R=H, CH3 or C2H5 and Y=-NH2, -OM, where M=a cation, R, R2 and R3 are 1-4C alkyl, and X=an anion ) and 5-5000 ppm of a free-radical initiator having a dissociation constant of above 1 x 10-4 recip. secs. at 100 degrees C, acting or effective mainly between 50 and 100 degrees C. Radiation intensity is from 1000 to 1,000,000 rads/hr. to a dose of 1000 to 150,000 rads. nd is terminated before formation of water-insol. polymer in the reaction mass, allowing chemically induced polymerisation to continue. 30-95 wt.% of the unsatd. monomer initially present is converted to water-sol. polymer before termination of radiation. In producing water-sol. polymers in the form of a pourable liquid or a non-pourable rubbery gel. Termination of radiation before completing the polymerisation avoids any cross linking of the polymer. As the polymerisation reactions are exothermic and sufficient temp. is reached to induce chemically initiated polymerisation, this will continue until almost all of the monomer is converted to polymer.
