Abstract
Coagulation rates are measured using a hollow cylinder of uniform bore and a dia. large enough to eliminate effects of sample viscosity. The cylinder contains lyophilised reagents reactable with a fluid sample. The fluid sample is injected into the cylinder and passed into the cylinder by supporting it such that gravity causes the sample to move downward, thus contacting the lyophilised reagents. The movement of the sample as it descends from contact with the reagents is gauged until it reaches a posn. of immobilisation. Used for rapid assessment of coagulation rates. The clotting ability of small samples of whole blood or plasma is assessed on the basis of measurements such as prothrombin time, partial thromboplastin time or similar tests. The test can be carried out in approx. two mins., using a drop of whole blood from a finger puncture as opposed to an venipuncture necessary in previously used methods.
