Abstract

A low shrink thermosetting polyester moulding compsn. comprising an unsatd. polyester prepolymer, an unsatd solvent which subsequently condenses with the prepolymer and a minor amt. of a thermoplastic polymer to reduce the shrinkage of the compsn. on curing, is prepd. by (a) initiating polymn. of styrene at 40-90 degrees C to produce a non-highly branched thermoplastic polymer, (b) stopping polymn. when is not > 50% of the monomer has reacted to give a plystyrene having a narrow band of intermediate mol. wt. of 75,000-500,000 and having a dispersity of 1.0-2.6, (c) maintaining the polystyrene dispersed in its styrene soln. and (d) mixing the dispersion with the polyester prepolymer. During cure of the compsn. the polystyrene forms non-spherical thermoplastic bodies of a separated phase having a diffuse interface tightly bonded with the cured thermoset resin. This bonding between the two major phases produces cured materials having less water absorption, better pigmentability and better dispersion of filler than prior art.
