Abstract

The tube is deformed by raising it to at least its plasticising temp. and enclosing it in a mould. An enclosed cavity is formed inside the mould and this is filled with a gaseous pressurised medium; the pressure being maintained in the tube. When deformation is complete, the tube is filled with a coolant under pressure, - at 10 atm. as against 6 atm. for the gaseous medium, which is pumped through in a constant flow. Pref. freshly extruded and cut off blanks are used to form double sockets for pressure lines. Fittings from deformed tubes withstand higher loading than those formed by die casting. The technique enables the deformed pipe to be stabilised and cooled quickly enough to permit the use of directly extruded blanks.
