Abstract

A thermometer has a long tube of a first material enclosing a length of a second material, the coefficient of linear expansion of the first being greater than that of the second material. Pref. the tube is of PTFE and the rod is of a Ni/-Fe alloy with a negligible coefficient of linear expansion. The tube and the rod are attached at one end to each other while at their other ends they are attached respectively to the coil and to the core of an adjustable transformer. The thermometer can generate directly an electrical signal which can be transmitted over long distances. It responds quickly and accurately to changes in temp. and is much cheaper than known thermometers working with electronic devices.
