Abstract
The bicycle pump has a piston with rod working in a housing, and the hollow rod is of only slightly smaller diameter than the housing. There is a recess (3) in the rod (2) to accommodate a tool, e.g. for tyre repairs. This recess can be so positioned in the rod that it comes just clear of the housing when the rod is pulled right out. A spring (4) can be fixed to one side of the piston (7), covering the recess when in the unloaded condition.
