Abstract

The braking system for a roller ski consists of a shaft (18) which is hinged on an axle (20) in a hole in the ski stem (10). A braking bar (22) is fitted to the lower end of the shaft (18) and consists of a cross bar which contacts the outer edge of the wheels (14) to bring them both to a halt. At the top of the shaft (18) is a curved cross bar (24) level with the rear of the skier's calf. When the skier wishes to halt, the leg is brought upright forcing the calf (25) against the upper cross bar (24) swinging the shaft back so that the brake bar (22) contacts the rear wheel. The shaft is returned to the running position by means of a rubber block fitted to the ski platform (10) behind the shaft (18). The front edge (19) of the hole in the stem (10) limits forward movement of the shaft. The shaft can be dismantled into two pieces for transporting the skis. This method provides a ski brake which allows the skier to brake without losing balance and without having to fit ski poles into the brake arms, which may not be possible in an emergency.
