Abstract

PCM transmission system is for transmission in bipolar form of a signal of bit-words of n bits, in which each word containing less than n/2 single bits is inverted before conversion. Each n-bit word is converted to a bipolar (n-m) digit word, the value of the m-bits being determined in the bipolar word as a pattern of an even number of polarity changes per bipolar word. The disparity per bipolar word is zero, so that the disparity can be used as an error check. In particular, (8+2) bits envelopes may be transmitted as 8 digit bipolar words with low redundancy.
