Abstract

An anionic ion-exchange membrane comprises a film of a crosslinked vinyl imidazole polymer or copolymer. The membrane has an anionic transport no. of 0.6 or more, a spec. electric conductivity of 0.5 x 10-3 to 20 x 10-3 -1 cm-1 (at 25 degrees C in 0.5N aq. NaCl soln.) and a resistance to organic contamination which is 10 mins or more measured as the time needed before the electrodialysis voltage becomes twice that at the start when 0.5 N aq. NaCl. soln. containing 10 ppm sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate is subjected to electrodialysis at current density of 1.1 A/dm2. Used in the treatment of organic contaminants present in electrolyte solns., e.g. sewage water, sewage treatment water, whey, milk, plating liquids, electrostatic coating liquids and other organic electrolyte solns. The anion exchange membranes have excellent resistance to organic contamination as well as excellent electrochemical, mechanical and chemical props. Long-term economical operation using the membranes in an electrodialyis operation is possible.
