Abstract
An electrolytic vat suitable for electrolysis of aq. sol. e.g. of NaCl, KCl, has a cathodic section comprising >=1 feeder bus bar linked to an assembly of bus bar bands made from high conductivity metal and arranged to give a uniform current density through the bus bars in electrical contact with cathode rods without any large loss of voltage. These cathode rods extend from one side to the other of the vat, the wall forming part of the vat. The rods, of varying length, are supported on a cathode rod support, which is connected to a perforated plate in such a way as to form a collection volume for gas given off the cathode during electrolysis. Between the cathode rods are positioned anodes of high conductivity metal having a flat and uniform surface with sectional shape of a right angled triangle. A diaphragm permeable to the electrolyte but resistant to the prods. of electrolysis can be used to separate the anodic and cathodic compartments. Provides a uniform current density with small voltage drop and a reduced capital cost.
