Abstract

Rigid lightweight solid structured articles are composed of (a) 3.38-7.73 wt. % (on a+b) of comminuted foamed polystyrene particles adhesively embedded in (b) a thermoset polyurethane and foam matrix. Used esp. in the prodn. of decorative shaped blocks or panels which are opt. faced with glass, mirrors, aluminium, copper, ceramic tiles, high pressure decorative laminates, etc. In pref. method of mfr., 7-15 pts. comminuted foamed polystyrene particles are mixed with 100 pts. of the diisocyanate component of the polyurethane for 20 sec. to 1 min. to wet the particles, the polyol component and catalyst are added, mixed for a few secs. to homogenise the mixt., and the prod. poured into closable moulds and cured. The density of the foam depends on the capacity of the mould and the degree of filling. Mouldings may be panel-shaped, blocks, shaped parts, etc., depending on the shape of the mould, and decorative parts can be made by lining the mould with suitable facing materials which adhere to the foam during cures.
