Abstract

The high pressure discharge tube is for a discharge lamp, where the ends of the tube are narrower towards the ends than in the centre. The wall of the discharge tube is mainly made from a ceramic material, it is made in two parts which are joined at the centre. A mould with a flexible polyurethane rubber outer jacket (3) is used in conjunction with a steel pin (1) whose diameter is narrower at one end than the other. The space between the pin and the outer jacket is filled with a powder (4) which consists of aluminium oxide. One side of the mould is sealed with a stopper (5) and the other side by a thickened part (6) of the pin. The walls of the completed tube have a polycrystalline structure. The join at the centre is made by a crimping process.
