Abstract
Materials consisting of ballast and a binder, where part of the ballast is made water-repellent and is then mixed with the remaining ballast so that while the material rejects water, it still permits the diffusion of moisture from the interior to the surface. A min. of 5% and pref. 10% of the ballast is made water-repellent by impregnation with silane or siloxane resins, and the pref. grain-size of the ballast impregnated is 0.1-4 mm. For thin mortars, one-third of the ballast can be impregnated. When all the ballast is impregnated, e.g. with a 40% soln. of silane in methyl alcohol, the diffusion of moisture is too low to permit drying of the material; conversely, when none of the ballast is impregnated the water penetration was too high, these tests being carried out on a thin mortar using 100 g ballast with 30 g of a lime and cement binder. However, when part of the ballast was impregnated (e.g. 20-50%) a satisfactory compromise between water-rejection and moisture-diffusion was achieved.
