Abstract

1502322 Water-proofing building materials NYA ASFALT AB 31 Jan 1975 4331/75 Heading DIP A composition containing a liquid continuous phase and a discontinuous phase of deformable "particles" comprising a hydrophobic substance, at least one third of the "particles" having a "particle" size of not less than 0.1 micron is used to impregnate inorganic building materials so as to render them repellant to liquid water whilst maintaining sufficient permeability to water vapour to allow moisture to evaporate from the material, the liquid of the continuous phase then being removed by evaporation. The deformable "particles" may consist entirely of hydrophobic material and may be a liquid or semisolid. Alternatively the "particles" may comprise globules of a solution of a hydrophobic material in e.g. petrol, the globules being dispersed in e.g. an aqueous continuous phase. The hydrophobic material may be a silane, e.g. ethyl, butyl and hexyl trimethoxysilane, methyl, ethyl, propyl or butyl -tri (2-methoxyethoxy)-silane or -tri (ethoxy-ethoxy) silane, phenyl triethoxy silane, cresyl triethoxysilane, hexamethyl disiloxane, hexaphenyl-disiloxane, dimethyltetraphenyl-disiloxane or tetramethyldiphenyl disiloxane, hydrolysed silanes and polysiloxanes i.e. silicones. Preferably the continuous phase is water or a mixture of water with a smaller amount of methanol, ethanol or propanol. The particles are preferably 0.1 to 10 microns in size and comprise 5-25% by volume of the composition. The composition may be applied by a brush or sponge, by spraying or by suction. The building material may be sand stone, lime stone, bricks, mortar, concrete and asbestos cement. In example 7 the building material is washed with hot water before impregnation with the hydrophobic deformable "particles".
