Abstract
Polycarboxylic ether acids are prepd. by reacting the alkali salts of carboxylic ether acids of formula (I): R-O-CHR'-COOH (I) (where R is opt. branched 1-22C alkyl opt. substd. by OH or carboxylic gps. or interrupted by O atoms; R' is H or 1-4C lower alkyl) in the presence of alkali alcoholates and opt. catalysts based on heavy metals and inert diluents, with CO2 at 200-350 degrees C, pref. 250-300 degrees C under pressure and then converting the resulting polycarboxylic ether acid alkali, salt into the free acid in known manner. The polycarboxylic ether acids are obtd. in high yields by a continuous or discontinuous process with short reaction periods, generally 1-3 hrs. They are used as components for ions producing hardness in water and may be added to washing and cleansing prepns. as such, or as thier alkali salts or directly as the reaction mixtures freed from inert additives.
