Abstract

1448533 Moulded ion exchange membrane MITSUBISHI PETROCHEMICAL CO Ltd 13 Aug 1974 [17 Aug 1973] 35611/74 Heading B5A [Also in Division C3] Ion exchange membranes comprising finely divided ion exchange resin heterogeneously dispersed in a thermoplastic resin are prepared by mixing (1) a thermoplastic resin and (2) substantially dry ion exchange resin powder in proportions of 2 : 8 to 8 : 2 by weight, preparing pellets from the mixture, adding before or after pelletizing 0À1 to 10 parts by weight per 100 parts of resins of (3) a lubricant selected from fatty acid amides, fatty acid esters and metallic soaps, subjecting the pellets to extrusion and to pressing using at least one set of rolls at 50‹ to 150‹ C. Preferably two to five sets of rolls operating at 70‹ to 130‹ C. are used to cool, solidify and smooth the membrane and prevent shedding of ion exchange resin particles. The membranes may be improved by immersing in hot water, aqueous alkali or aqueous acid. In examples membranes are prepared by pelletizing, extruding and pressing compositions of polypropylene and (1) sulphonated cross-linked polystyrene and sorbitan stearate, (2) sulphonated cross-linked polystyrene and ethylene bis-stearamide and (4) epoxy resin containing amino groups and sorbitan stearate.
