Abstract

Solutions are separated by a membrane process such as reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration or electrodialysis. The fluid is pumped through narrow circular channels bounded by a system of coaxial and concentric hollow cones made of a thin porous material. The inner and outer walls of the cones are clothed with membranes. The cross sectional area of the channels may increase or decrease in the flow direction or the fluid direction may be changed as it flows through the equipment so that it flows alternately in diverging and converging channels. The equipment is built from modules which can easily be dismantled for cleaning or replacement. The hydrodynamic design provides a saving in pumping energy.
