Abstract

Powder prepns. for treating burns comprise (a) silver sulphadiazine (I) and (b) a carrier which swells spontaneously on contact with the fluid from the wound at ambient temp. The powder can be applied without touching the wound, whereupon it rapidly forms an ointment-like mass, which can be removed simply by immersion in or spraying with water. The prepns. can be sterilised (cf. prior art ointments). The carrier pref. makes up 97-99.7% of the wt. of the prepn. It pref. comprises 5-99.7 (esp. 5-90) wt% of a swelling agent (e.g. an Al silicate, a Mg-Al silicate, Na alginate, pectin or CMC), 0-94 (esp. 50-94) wt% of a filler (e.g. microcrystalline cellulose, non-swellable starch, MgCO3 or CaCO3), 0-5 (esp. 0.5-5) wt% of a lubricant (e.g. SiO2, Mg stearate, MgO or a higher fatty acid glyceride), and 0-1 (esp. 0.1-1) wt% of a wetting agent (e.g. Na lauryl sulphate, dioctyl Na sulphosuccinate or polyoxyethylene-sorbitan monooleate).
