Abstract

Cheese is stored on units of racking which can be turned using a fork lift truck whose forks can be rotated. Savings in space and labour and the ability to unload cheeses from any part of the store without disturbing others. Each unit of racking has top and bottom members which have recesses to take the forks of the truck. The members are joined by pairs of vertical rods. Each pair of rods along one long side of the rack forms a bed for a number of cheeses when the racking is turned. Each short side of the rack has one pair of rods. The rods are U shaped supports welded to them which support a number of shelves vertically above one another and of the same general dimensions as the top and bottom members. Cheeses are laid on each shelf, one cheese corresponding to each pair of rods on the long side of the rack. The racks are stacked in rows with their long sides adjacent. Gangways are left between rows. For turning a truck lifts a rack into the gangway, turns it about a horizontal axis parallel to the long side and replaces it in the row. The cheeses, during this operation, rest for part of the time against the rods and finally rest on what was previously the shelf above them.
