Abstract

The absorption of H2S from gas mixts. is carried out by contacting the gas with an aq. alkanolamine soln. contg. up to 50(pref. 10-20) wt.% of a neutral water-soluble salt of a strong acid and a weak base, and subsequently regenerating the soln. and re-using it for H2S absorption. The process can be used to treat CO2-contg. gases (e.g. Claus-process waste gases and waste gases from the partial combustion of S-contg. fuels) as well as CO2-free gases (e.g. refinery gases obtd. by hydrotreatment of S-contg. hydrocarbon fractions, and certain types of natural gas). Increasing the ionic strength of the alkanolamine soln. increases its capacity for absorbing H2S without affecting the selectivity for H2S with respect to CO2.
