Abstract

The title material, which has an ave. degree of substitution of >0.35 carboxyalkyl radicals/anhydro-glucose unit in the cellulose, is prepd. by (1) reacting the cellulosic material with carboxyalkylating agents to give a water-sol. carboxyalkyl-cellulose having the above substitution characteristics, but with moderate liquid absorption and retention props. (2) removing a portion of the carboxyalkylating agents and by-prods. formed during the reaction such that >=3% of these cpds. are present based on the water-sol. carboxyalkylcellulose. (3) heat-treating the resulting carboxyalkylcellulose in the presence of the remaining carboxyalkylating agents and by-products of the reaction so as to confer water-insolubility and the desired liquid absorption and retention props. Used for sanitary pads or surgical dressing etc.
