Abstract

Heavy metals are removed from conc. caustic alkali solns. (lye) by adding an oxidising agent to the lye and contacting the lye with a polymer of a vinylaromatic cpd. contg. -(CHR)nSH gps. or an alkali metal salt form thereof, where R is H or CH3 and n = 0.1 - 2. The thiol-resin can also be used to remove Zn ions from waste water in rayon mfre, contg. Zn++, Mg++ and Ca++.
