Abstract
Glass fibres which are to be incorporated in an elastomer forming a continuous phase are treated in order to ensure the separation of the fibres from each other and to promote adhesion of the fibres to the elastomer by (a) coating the fibres with a compsn. which is compatible with the elastomer and, after drying or curing, maintains the fibres separate in order to avoid mutual wear, (b) impregnating the coated fibres with an elastomer-based compns. which is different from the compsn. of stage (a) and is capable of reacting with the elastomer of the continuous phase or of adhering to this elastomer, and (c) collecting the fibres in bundles, this operation being effected after stage (a) and before stage (b) or before both stages. Stage (b) is effected when the compsn. of stage (a) applied to the fibres is sufficiently fluid to permit the mixing of the two compsns. so that a mechanical bond exists between the compsns. after drying and curing, stage (b) being terminated before the vulcanisation of the elastomer of the continuous phase.
