Abstract
1343590 Flexible duct; hose joints OWENSCORNING FIBERGLAS CORP 11 July 1972 [13 July 1971] 32378/72 Addition to 1167154 Headings F2P and F2G A flexible duct, e.g. for use in air conditioning or heating systems, comprises a tubular insulating wall 20 including glass fibre mat 21, and a supporting helical coil 10 of flat, corrosion resistant strap material formed into a closed loop 11 on at least one end with fastening means 12, 13. As shown in Fig. 1, the fastening means 12, 13 may include metal seals 12 clamped around overlaying portions of the coil strap 10 or spot welds 13. The outer face of the coil 10 receives an adhesive to bond it to the tubular wall 20. The coil may be of galvanized steel strapping or of glass fibre reinforced plastics. The wall 20 may further include an inner layer 22 of fabric having sound-admitting openings therein and an outer layer 23 of gas impervious material. The inner layer 22 is bonded both to the insulating mat 21 and to the coil 10 and may be of glass fibre serim or a gas impervious sandwich of glass fibre scrim between vinyl layers. The outer layer 23 may also be of such material. Successive lengths of duct may be connected together with a cylindrical connecting collar 30, Fig. 3, comprising a strip of resilient sheet metal coiled to overlap the ends and reduce the diameter sufficiently for insertion into the duct bore. Sheet metal screws 40, which may be selfdrilling and self-tapping, are driven through the insulating mat 21 and inner layer 22, after pulling back the outer layer 23, and into the collar 30 to compress the duct wall between washers 50 and the collar 30. The outer layer 23 is then returned over the joint and tape 70 is applied around the wall to provide a gas impervious connection.
