Abstract

Plastic compsns. (e.g. PVC, polyamide, PMMA, fluorocarbons, ABS, epoxy phenolic, and elastomers) with improved strength, gloss, flatter surface, better mouldability and metallizing properties, are made by incorporating 5-76 wt.% of needle-shaped rutile TiO2 with an average length of ca. 0.1-0.5 mu and an aspect ratio of 4-50:1. Coupling agents (silanes, methacrylatochromic chloride and chromium-fumarate complexes etc). may also be incorporated. Thus 30 wt.% TiO2 rutile with an aspect ratio of 15-20 was compounded with ABS on hot rolls, injection moulded into test pieces and metallized in the usual way to give a mirror finish which was not degraded by 10 cycles at -24.4 degrees to +82.2 degrees C.
