Abstract

The luminous materials consists of silicates of one or more alkaline earth metals and lanthanum and for yttrium, of formula Mea+y, Meb-y(SiO4)6-y-p(PO4)y(GeO4)pOx;Aq in which MeII is at least one of Ca, Sr, Ba and Mg, up to 50 mol.% of which may be replaced by Zn and for Cd, MeIII is La and/or Y and A is an activator from the group Sb, Pb, Sn, Sb, and Mn, which replaces an equivalent amount of MeII and for MeIII. The following conditions apply:- a + 1.56 = 12 + x; 0 = x =2; 0 = y =4.5; 0 = p =4.5 y + p =4.5; 0.05 =9 =0.8; 4/3 = b/a =8; if y = O, then 2 = b/a =8; if a =2 then a + b =8.66 ; if a =2 then a + b =10; and if a + b =9 and x = O then y =1.5. The materials show high absorption and maximum excitation in the spectral region around 254 nn abd hence give higher light yields when used with a low pressure mercury vapour discharge source.
