Abstract

The polymers are made by polymerising ethylene at -90 to +55 degrees C and 7-140 atm. in an inert aromatic hydrocarbon diluent (e.g. benzene m-toluene or xylene), in the pres. of a catalyst comprising (1) alkyl- or alkylhalide cpds. of metals of grps. I-III (esp. Et3Al or EtCl2Al), (2) a halide of a metal of grps. IVB, VB, VIB or VIII (esp. TiCl4, ZrCl4, VCl4 or CrCl3), (3) tert. halides or alkylhalocyclopentanes (esp. methylchloropentane) and (4) opt. a metallocene, esp. ferrocene. Ratio of components and reaction conditions are critical for high yields of named products. Preferred products are C12-22 linear alpha alkenes which are useful for sulphonation into cleaning agents.
