Preparation of epsilon-caprolactam from epsilon amino caproamide and/or epsilon-aminocaproic acid. N5-. Process:- (a) passing steam at 150-400 degrees C continuously into a reaction system consisting of epsilon - aminocaproic acid and/or epsilon-amincaproamide; (b) continuously distilling steam from the reaction system; and (c) separating the lactam from the distillate. Pref. The steam temp. is 200-350 degrees C; The acid and/or amide are pref. present in an aqueous system; The internal pressure of the reaction system is pref. between atmospheric pressure and 3 atom; The reaction mixture pref. contains a catalyst consisting of a non-volatile phosphorus cpd., sulphur cpd., boron cpd., or a solid acid.
