Description
A package as well as a slide and a blank suitable for such a package
The invention relates to a package comprising a housing and a slide which is slidably accommodated in the housing in a sliding direction in and out of at least a front opening of the housing, which slide comprises a bottom wall, side walls connected to the bottom wall, as well as at least one flange-shaped upper edge spaced from the bottom wall, which flange-shaped upper edge is connected to the side walls, wherein the flange-shaped upper edge comprises at least one part that extend parallel to the sliding direction, wherein said at least one part is provided with at least one hook-shaped element, whilst the housing comprises at least one side wall, wherein the side wall of the housing is provided with at least one recess in which the at least one hook-shaped element connected to the slide can be positioned for at least locking the slide in position in the housing, which at least one hook-shaped element can be moved out of the at least one recess against spring force, after which the slide can be moved in the sliding direction in in and out of the front opening of the housing.
The invention also relates to a slide and a blank suitable for such a package.
Such a package, which is known from EP3016883B1, is suitable for use as a child resistant, senior-friendly package.
The package known from EP3016883B1 comprises a cardboard housing and a slide of plastic material, which is slidably accommodated in the housing.
It is known from EP3016883B1 to make the housing from a blank of cardboard.
To avoid the use of plastic it is desirable to male also the slide of cardboard or paperboard. However, to a make a slide from a blank with the desired strength requires the use of relatively thick and thus expensive material. Furthermore, since the whole slide must be folded from the blank, the possible functionalities which can be added to the slide are limited.
Usual housings are provided with a flap and flap portion to close a front opening of the housing. It has turned out that when children try to open the package, they will open the flap and put their fingers in a space between the housing and the side wall of the slide and the side part connected to the side wall of the slide.
Subsequently, they will try to tear the housing apart.
Furthermore, children can use the flaps to get hold on the package which facilitates the tearing apart thereof.
Tearing apart of the housing can be avoided by using tear-resistant cardboard and if this is not sufficient stronger cardboard but that will result in more costs and more material. Such tear-resistant cardboard is made from paper with a plastic laminate. To protect the environment the use of plastic and more material is not desirable.
Removing the flaps (tuck-in and dust flaps) of the housing would mean that one side of the package seems ‘open’ to a child. This will have a negative effect on the child resistant testing as the additional barrier that the flaps form is gone, which usually consumes a portion of the available time in the child resistant test to figure out. Furthermore it directs the child to that side of the package immediately, as the slide can be seen. By the known package the tight fit of the slide in the housing becomes extra important as children will use such opening to gain access to the package. So, the gap between slide and housing must be minimal.
Furthermore, if the slide is located too deep into the housing, and the housing extends too far out, then children can use that to start tearing the housing.
At least one of the objects of the invention is to provide a package with a slide be made from a blank, whilst the package is still child resistant and senior-friendly.
This object is accomplished with the package according to the invention in that in that the slide is made out of at least two flat blanks, - a first blanl of said at least two flat blanks comprises at least the bottom wall, the side walls connected to the bottom wall, as well as a first layer of the at least one flange-shaped upper edge provided with the at least one hook-shaped element; - a second blank of said at least two flat blanks comprises at least a second layer of the at least one flange-shaped upper edge provided with the at least one hook- shaped element, whereby after folding at least the first flat blank into the shape of the slide, the first and second layer of the at least one flange-shaped upper edge are connected to each other, whereby the at least one hook-shaped element of the first and second layer are positioned against each other.
A slide made out of at least two blanks whereby the flange-shaped upper edge comprises a first layer from the first blank and a second layer from the second blank has the advantage that the flange-shaped upper edge is relatively stiff whilst the bottom wall and the side walls are still very flexible and made of the single layer of the first blank.
Such a slide has further the advantage the additional flaps, parts, portions can be connected to either the first or second layer of the flange-shaped upper edge to provide the slide with additional functionalities as will be explained here below.
If desired the slide can be made out of more than two blanks, whereby the flange- shaped upper edge comprises 4 layer from each blank.
The flange-shaped upper edge bounds an opening of the slide through which objects like drugs or other small items can be placed into the space bounded by the bottom wall and the side walls.
An embodiment of the package according to the invention is characterized in that the second layer of the flange-shaped upper edge is ring-shaped.
In this manner the slide is provided along its whole circumference with the tlange-shaped upper edge, whereby the ring-shaped second layer of the flange-shaped upper edge will be connected to the flange-shaped upper edges of each of the four side walls. The ring-shaped second layer of the flange-shaped upper edge provides a connection between the flange-shaped upper edges of two adjacent side walls. The side walls of the two adjacent side walls can be provided with flaps to connect the side walls directly to each other and to close the space at the transition between two flange-shaped upper edges of two adjacent side walls. However, it is also possible to connect the side walls to each other only by means of the ring-shaped second layer of the flange-shaped upper edge, so that less material is needed for the first blank.
The flange-shaped upper edge also provides the slide with enough sturdiness.
Another embodiment of the package according to the invention is characterized in that the first and second blanks of the slide are made of cardboard, paperboard, a cellulose based material or a fibre based material.
In this manner a slide made of cardboard, paperboard can be obtained, which is more environmental-friendly than plastic slides. The first and second blank can easily be punched in its desired shape. During this usual punching operation, all walls and edges can be simultaneously formed. As a result, additional operations for providing the blanks with the desired shaped are not needed. The first and second blank can be made of the same or of different materials and can have the same or different thickness.
Another embodiment of the package according to the invention is characterized in that the first or second layer of the at least one flange-shaped upper edge comprises at least one side part located at an inner side near one of the side walls of the slide, which one side part is provided at an outer side thereof with a flap extending in a direction towards a plane of the bottom wall, which flap is connected at a distance of the side part to the slide, which flap closes the front opening of the housing when the slide is locked in position in the housing.
By connecting the flap at a distance of the side part to the slide, the flap has a tixed position with respect to the side wall.
Since the flap closes the opening of the housing, there is no or not enough space bounded by the housing and the flap in the locked position of the slide for fingers of a child to get grip on the housing for tearing it apart.
At the same time the flap as well as the side walls and the bottom wall can all be made of relatively thin material, whereby due to amongst others the double Jayered flange-shaped upper edge, the slide is sufficiently rigid.
A further advantage is that the housing does not need to be provided with flaps 5 (tuck-in and dust flaps) so that the risk that the housing can be torn apart is highly reduced. This also means that a larger choice of material from which the housing can be made is available. For example, the housing can be made only from carton without an additional plastic foil, so that the housing can easily be recycled.
Another embodiment of the package according to the invention is characterized in that the flap is connected to the side wall provided with the side part of the flange shaped upper edge.
This connection can be realised by means of glue, by mechanical means like protrusions connected to the flap and inserted into holes is the side wall or vice versa or by other means. By connecting the flap to the side wall, a child will not be able to get a grip on the flap to be able to pull on the flap and the slide connected thereto.
Another embodiment of the package according to the invention is characterized in that the flap is provided at a side remote of the side part with a first extension extending in a direction parallel to the plane of the bottom wall as well as a second extension extending in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the bottom wall, which second is connected to the one of the side walls of the slide.
This has the advantage that independent of the distance between the flap and the side wall, the length of the first extension can be made so long that it will extend to a position near the side wall, whereafter the second extension can be positioned against the side wall and be connected thereto. This has furthermore the advantage that the first extension will close the gap near the bottom wall between the flap and the side wall so that also the risk that a child can put his finger into this gap is avoided.
Another embodiment of the package according to the invention is characterized in that the first or second layer of the at least one flange-shaped upper edge comprises two of said side parts with flaps connected thereto, wherein when the slide is locked in position in the housing one of the flaps closes the front opening of the housing, whilst the other flap closes a rear opening of the housing.
In this manner, the housing can be a simple sleeve being open at the front as well as the rear, whereby the front opening as well as the rear opening are closed by means of flaps.
Another embodiment of the package according to the invention is characterized in that the at least two layered flange-shaped upper edge comprises two parts extending parallel to the sliding direction, wherein each part is provided with at least one hook-shaped element, whilst the housing comprises two side walls, wherein each sidewall is provided with at least one recess, the recess and the hook-shaped element located at a first of said side walls are staggered, seen in the sliding direction, relative to the recess and the hook-shaped element located at a second of said side walls.
When the slide is pulled at, without the hook-shaped elements being pressed out of the recesses, the hook-shaped elements will prevent the slide from being moved out of the housing.
The provision of a hook-shaped element that can be positioned in a recess on either side of the package makes it difficult for a child to open the package, because both hook-shaped elements must be removed from the respective recesses simultaneously before the slide can be moved in the sliding direction.
Moreover, because the hook-shaped elements are staggered, it will be virtually impossible for a young child of about 4 vears old to place its fingers so that both staggered hoolk-shaped elements are removed simultaneously, against spring force, trom the likewise staggered recesses.
Another embodiment of the package according to the invention is characterized in that the second layer of the at least one flange-shaped upper edge comprises at least one side part located at an inner side near one of the side walls of the slide, which one side part is provided at an outer side thereof with a portion being folded over the at least one side part.
The portion can be used to limit the movement of the slide with respect to the housing by providing the housing with a similar portion folded inside the housing whereby when the slide is slid out of the housing, the portion of the second layer will be located between the housing and the portion of the housing.
Another embodiment of the package according to the invention is characterized in that the second layer of the at least one flange-shaped upper edge comprises at least one side part located at an inner side near one of the side walls of the slide, which one side part is provided at an outer side thereof with a foldable part provided with a T-shaped opening.
Such T-shaped opening can be used to be connected to a locking device of a product like a blister with drugs so that the product can not easily be removed from the slide. The locking device can be inserted into the T-shaped opening.

The package 1 described so far is known from EP3016883B1 of the same applicant of the present application.
By the package 1 according to the invention the housing 2 as well as the slide 3 are made from blanks of cardboard, paperboard, a cellulose based material or a fibre based material.
The slide 3 of the package 1 according to the invention is made from two blanks 31, 32 as shown in the figures 2 and 3.
The first blank 31 is a flat piece of cardboard or paperboard being cut in the desired shape and provided with folding lines. The first blank 31 comprises the bottom part 13, the four side walls 13-16. To each side wall 13-16 a part 19’, 20’, 21’ and 22’ of the first layer of the flange-shaped upper edge 18 is connected.
The parts 19” and 20’ comprises parts 23’ of the first layer of the hook-shaped element 23.
The second blank 32 is a flat piece of cardboard or paperboard being cut in the desired shape and provided with folding lines. The second blanl 32 comprises parts 197, 20”, 21” and 227 of the second layer of the flange-shaped upper edge 18.
The parts 19”, 207, 21” and 22” of the second layer of the flange-shaped upper edge 18 are interconnected and form a ring.
The parts 19” and 20” comprises parts 23” of the second layer of the hook- shaped element 23.
Part 22” forms a side part which when connected to part 22’ is located at an inner side near the side wall 17 of the slide 3. The side part 22” is provided at an outer side thereof with a flap 33, a first extension 34 and a second extension 35. Folding lines 36, 37, 36 between the side part 22” and the flap 33, the flap 33 and the first extension 34. the first extension 34 and a second extension 35 extend perpendicular to the direction indicated by double arrow Pi.
To form the slide 3 out of the two blanks 31, 32 the side walls 14-17 are folded upwards and the parts 19’, 20’, 21° and 22’ are folded outwards, away from each other.
Subsequently the parts 197, 207, 21” and 22” of the second blank 32 are connected to the respective parts 19’, 20’, 21” and 22’ of the first blank 31 by means of cold seal, hot seal or any other desired means. After connecting the parts 19’, 19”; 207,207; 21°, 217; 297,29” to each other, the side walls 14-17 will maintain their erected position with respect to the bottom wall 13. Due to the interconnected parts 19’, 197; 207, 207; 21, 217; 29,22” a relatively stiff ring shaped flange-shaped upper edge 18 is obtained. Also, the parts 23’ and 23” are connected to each other to form the doubled layered hook-shaped element 23.
u
Next, the flap 33 is folded in the direction of the bottom wall 13, the first extension 34 is folded in the direction of the bottom wall 13 so that it extends parallel thereto and the second extension 35 is folded in a direction towards the side part 22.
The second extension 35 is connected to the side part 22 by means of an adhesive or a tape.
The flap 33 will close the front opening of the housing 2 when the slide 3 is locked in position in the housing 2.
The housing 2 of the package 1 according to the invention is made from a third blank 41 as shown in figure 4.
The blank 41 is a flat piece of cardboard or paperboard being cut in the desired shape and provided with folding lines.
The blank 41 comprises the bottom wall 4, the side wall 5, parts 6’, 6” forming the side wall 6, parts 42-45 forming the rear wall 7 and the upper wall 8.
By folding the bottom wall 4, side wall 5, parts 6’, 6” and the upper wall 8 about the folding lines and connecting parts 6’, 6” to each other a sleeve-like housing is obtained.
Part 42 is connected to the side wall 6’. Part 43 is connected to the upper wall 8. Part 44 is connected to the side wall 5. Part 45 is connected to bottom wall 4.
After forming the sleeve-like housing, the parts 42, 44 are connected by means of an adhesive to part 43. Thereafter part 45 is connected by means of an adhesive to part 43. Preferably the parts 42, 44 are connected to one side of part 43 whilst part 45 is connected to the other side of part 43.
Parts 43, 45 are provided with passages 46, 47, which are aligned when the parts 43, 454 are connected to each other.
Part 45 is provided with a perforated tear line 48.
The package 1 functions as follows.
In the position wherein the slide 3 is located inside the housing 2, the flap 33 of the slide 3 closes the opening 9 of the housing 2. In the closed position, the hook- shaped elements 23 of the slide 3 are located in the recesses 10, 11 of the housing 2, whereby the slide 3 is locked inside the housing 2.
To move the slide 3 out of the housing 2, a user must push simultaneously with fingers of one hand on both hook-shaped elements 23 and also push simultaneously with a finger of his other hand on the wall 16 by inserting this finger through the aligned passages 46, 47 in the rear wall 7. See figure 5. The slide 3 will hereby be moved out of the housing 2. For a young child these combined actions are too difficult to perform so that a young child will not be able to open the package 1.
If the child tries to tear the part 45 from the part 43 and succeeds in getting grip at the corner parts 49, 50 of part 45, these corner parts 49, 50 will be teared from part 45 along the perforated tear line 48. The remaining part 45 will still be fixed connected to the part 43 and the rear wall 7 will still close the package 1.
If desired one or both of the passages 46, 47 can be closed when the package 1 is being delivered, and must be opened or removed before the first time that a user wants to push on the slide 3.
Figure 6 shows an alternative embodiment of the third blank 51, which is similar to blank 41 except that it does not comprise the passages 46, 47 and perforated tear Jine 48. The remove the slide 2 from a housing made of this blank 51, the slide 3 must be provided at the front side with means, like a tab to be able to pull at the slide 3 or a passage for inserting a finger to be able to pull at the slide 3.
Figures 7-11 show a second embodiment of a package 61 according to the invention. The package 61 comprises a housing 62 and a slide 63.
The basic principle of the package 61 is similar to the package 1 so that only the differences will be explained.
The slide 63 of package 61 differs from slide 3 in that the flap 33 connected to side part 22 is provided with one extension 64 which extends parallel to the bottom wall 13 and is attached to the lower side thereof by means of an adhesive or a tape.
The flap 33 will close the front opening of the housing 62 when the slide 63 is locked in position in the housing 62.
By the slide 63 also side part 21 is provided with a flap 65 and an extension 66. The extension 66 extends parallel to the bottom wall 13 and is attached to the lower side thereof by means of an adhesive. The flap 65 will be located against the reaar wall 7 of the housing 62 when the slide 63 is locked in position in the housing 62.
The slide 63 of the package 61 according to the invention is made from two blanks 67, 68 as shown in the figures 2 and 3.
The first blank 67 differs from blank 31 in that additional flaps 69, 70 are attached to side wall 14 and in that additional flaps 71, 72 are attached to side wall 15. These flaps 69-72 are foldable along fold lines extending perpendicular to the folding lines about which the side walls 14, 15 are foldable with respect to the bottom wall 13.
After folding the side walls 14-17 to a position wherein they extend substantially perpendicular to the bottom wall 13, the flaps 69, 72 are attached to the side wall 17. whereas the flaps 70, 71 are attached to the side wall 16 by means of an adhesive. In this manner a strong connection between the side walls 14-17 is obtained.
The second blank 68 differs from blank 32 in that the side part 22” is provided with the flap 33 and the extension 64 and in that that the side part 21” is provided with the flap 65 and the extension 66.
The housing 62 of the package 61 is made from a third blank 73 as shown in tigure 10.
The third blank 73 differs from the blank 41 in that the upper wall 8 is provided on a side opposite to part 43 of the rear wall 7 with a part 74, whilst the bottom wall 4 is provided on a side opposite to part 45 of the rear wall 7 with a part 75. The parts 74, 75 reinforce the housing 62, will prevent bending of the bottom wall 4 and upper wall 8 and will prevent tearing apart of the the housing 62 at the walls 4, 8.
The package 61 functions in a similar manner as package 1. In the position wherein the slide 63 is located inside the housing 62, the flap 33 of the slide 3 closes the opening 9 in the front side of the housing 2. In this position, the flap 65 is located against the rear wall 7 and closes the passages 46, 47 in a manner that a child can not put his finger into the passages 46, 47 to get a grip on the rear wall 7 to tear it apart.
Figures 12-18 show a third embodiment of a package 81 according to the invention. The package 81 comprises a housing 82 and a slide 83.
The basic principle of the package 81 is similar to the packages 1, 61 so that only the differences will be explained.
The slide 83 of packages 1, 61 differs from slides 3, 63 in that it does not comprises a flap which closes the opening 9 of the housing. However, it does comprise a flap-like portion 84 being folded over fold line 85 on top of the side part 22. The flap-like portion 84 rests on the flange-shaped upper edge 18 when the slide 83 is located inside the housing 82 or only be moved over a small distance out of the housing 82. Only, when the slide 83 is moved out of the housing 82 over a distance sufficient to pivot the flap-like portion 84 in a direction indicated by arrow P2 away from the flange-shaped upper edge 18, access to the space inside the slide 83 and the constant located therein will be possible. From the flap-like portion 84 a tab 86 is pressed out along a perforated tear line. The tab 86 will be used to pull at the slide 83, when at the same time pressing at the hook-shaped elements 23.
The slide 83 of packages 1, 61 also differs from slides 3, 63 in that it is provided at the side part 21 with a flap-like portion 87 being folded over fold line 88 on top of the side part 21.
Connected to an inner side of the side part 21 is a flap 89 being folded over fold line 90 in a direction towards the bottom wall 13. An extension 91 is connected to the flap 89 and being folded over fold line 92 in a direction towards the side wall 17. The extension 91 is connected to the bottom wall 13 by means of an adhesive.
The side part 21 and flap 89 are provided with a T-shaped slot 93 comprising a first passage 94 extending parallel to the fold lines 90, 92 and a second passage 95 extending perpendicular to the first passage 93. The first passage 94 is fully located in the side part 21. The second passage 95 is partly located in the side part 21 and partly located in the flap 89.
Figure 13 shows a perspective view of a product 95 being provided with a connector 96. In the embodiment as shown in figure 13, the connector 96 is H-shaped and comprises a first part 97 connected to the product 95, a bridge part 98 extending perpendicular to the first part 97 and a second part 99 extending parallel to the first part 97. The bridge part 98 and the second part 99 forms a T-shaped element, which has such dimensions that is can be inserted into the T-shaped slot 93.
As can be seen in figure 14, the product 95 provided with the connector 96 will be connected to the slide 83 by inserting the T-shaped element of the connector 96 into the T-shaped slot 93. After a number of products 95 have been connected with their connector 96 to the T-shaped slot 93, the flap 87 will be positioned over the part 21. When the slide 83 is located inside the housing 82, the flap 87 can not be pivoted so that the products 95 are prevented from being removed from the slide 83. The product 95 can for example be a blister provided with cavities into which pills are located.
Figure 15 shows a first blank 31 for making the slide 83. This blank 31 is identical to the blank 31 of the first embodiment of the package 1.
Figure 16 shows a second blank 100 for making the slide 83. The second blank 100 comprises the second layer of the ring shaped upper edge 18 as well as the flap- like portion 84, tab 86, a flap 89, extension 91 and T-shaped slot 93.
The housing 82 of the package 81 is made from a third blank 101 as shown in figure 17.
The third blank 101 differs from the blanks 41 in that at the rear side, no passages 46, 47 and no perforated tear line 48 are provided. The parts 42, 43 are connected to an inner side of the part 43 whilst the part 45 is connected to the outer side of part 43 by means of an adhesive.
The housing 82 comprises a front wall comprising parts 102-105 and flap 106.
Part 102 is connected to the side wall 6’. Part 103 is connected to the upper wall 8. Part 104 is connected to the side wall 5. Part 105 is connected to bottom wall 4. Part 105 comprises a closure flap 106.
The part 103 of the upper wall 8 is folded into the housing 82, whereby the tlap-like portion 87 of the slide 83 will be located between the part 103 and the upper wall 8 when the slide 83 is partly moved out of the housing 83. In this manner the part 103 prevents the slide 83 from being removed from the housing 82. When the slide 83 is located inside the housing 82, the parts 102, 104 will be folded towards each other and subsequently the part 105 is placed in front of the parts 102, 104, after which the closure flap 106 is inserted under part 103 into the housing 82 to close the opening 9.
It is possible to replace features of one embodiment by features of another embodiment.
It is also possible to use more than two layers, for example if additional thickness of the flange-shaped upper edge is needed, whilst a relatively thin wall of the side walls and the bottom wall is desired.
It is also possible that the flange-shaped upper edge is not ring-shaped but only extend over a part of the circumference of the slide.
The bottom wall 13, the side walls 14, 15, 16, 17 and the upper edge 18 being made of the layer of the first blank only are relatively thin, so that the parts 19, 20 of the upper edge 18 that are provided with the hook-shaped elements 23 can be moved toward each other against the spring force of the material of the slide 3.
The dimensions of the housing can vary from, for example, a width in Y- direction of 40 to 250 mm, a height in Z-direction of 12 to 80 mm and a length in X- direction of 50 to 400 mm. The wall thickness of the housing can vary from 400 to 1500 micron, for example.
The dimensions of the slide can vary from, for example, a width in Y-direction of 39 to 249 mm, a height in Z-direction of 11 to 79 mm and a length in X-direction of 49 to 399 mm. The wall thickness of each of the blanks of the slide can vary from 200 to 1500 micron, for example. The slide needs to be slightly smaller than the housing to be able to slide smoothly in and out of the housing 2. The dimension of the flap on the front or rear side of the slide is so that it fully closes the front and/or rear opening of the housing.
It is also possible that the front opening or rear opening of the housing does not have a rectangular shape and/or is not located perpendicular to the bottom wall 5 and the upper wall 8 but has another shape, like trapezium shaped or oval shaped or has other orientation for example in case that the bottom wall has another length than the upper wall. In all cases the flap of the slide has the same dimensions and orientation as the respective front opening or rear opening of the housing to be able to close the respective opening.
It is also possible to provide the second blank only with the second layer of the flange-shaped edge, whilst the first blank comprises the flaps, extensions and other parts to provide additional features to the slide.
It is possible that the thickness of the first and second blank differs wherein the thickness of the first blank determines the thickness and stiffness of the bottom wall and side walls whilst the combined thickness of the first and second blank determines the desired thickness and stiffness of the flange-shaped upper edge.
