Description
Device and method for picking up at least part of a textile item The invention relates to a device for picking up at least part of a textile item. The invention also relates to the use of such device. The invention further relates to a method for picking up at least part of a textile item. In the textile industry the way wherein handling of the textile occurs is of major importance. Textiles can have a delicate nature, wherefore they could be sensitive for damage during handling. Grippers which make use of pinching or mechanical clamping are often too rough for the most delicate materials. Hence, there is an interest from the market to focus on design and functionality of grippers configured for textile handling. Another example of a gripper according to the prior art is a gripper which makes use of vacuum. However, a drawback of such vacuum gripper is that such gripper will often pick up the plurality of layers if a double layer material is provided. Further, do to the force provided by the vacuum it cannot be ensured that the textile stays undamaged. Hence, it is a goal of the invention to provide an improved device, or at least an alternative, for picking up at least part of a textile item.
The invention provides thereto a device for picking up at least part of a textile (item), comprising: - at least one air inlet configured for the intake of air, in particular compressed air; - at least one air outlet configured for expelling or exhausting of air; and - at least one air guiding part configured for guiding at least part of an air flow in at least one predetermined direction; wherein at least one air guiding part comprises at least one guiding surface, wherein at least one air outlet and at least one guiding surface are positioned such that at least part of the air flow, when expelled from at least one air outlet, will be guided along the guiding surface such that a lifting force is or will be created which can pick up at least part of the textile item. The device according to the invention has several benefits over conventional devices which are configured for picking up at least part of a textile item. Instead of making use of vacuum, the device uses the outflow of air to enable part of a textile item to be picked up. Since the device comprises at least one air guiding part at least part of the expelled air flow can be guided in a predetermined direction. Since the air guiding part comprises at least one guiding surface and since at least one air outlet and at least one guiding surface are positioned such that at least part of the air flow which is expelled from at least one air outlet is guided along the guiding surface, typically in a laminar manner. Hence, the (laminar) flow creates a (temporarily) lifting force which can be applied to pick up at least part of the textile item. This can be at least partially explained by the pressure difference across the air flow (air jet) causing a Coanda effect. In fact, the air outlet and the guiding surface are positioned such that air expelled by the air outlet will deviate towards the guiding surface and/or adhere to the guiding surface, which could also at least partially be explained by the Coanda effect. The air guiding part according to the present invention enables that a controlled air flow can be obtained which can be used to pick up part of a textile item in a controlled manner. This can be at least partially explained by the application of at least one air guiding part configured for guiding at least part of an air flow in at least one predetermined direction. The part of the textile item which is to be lifted will typically be drawn towards the guiding surface by the lifting force of the air flow.
The use of an expelled air flow for lifting and/or picking up at least part of a textile item is beneficial over using vacuum for several reasons. The device according to the present invention enables that a single layer of the textile item can be picked, whereas a vacuum will typically pick up the plurality of layers if a double layer material is provided. Further, picking up at least part of a textile item by using the device according to the invention is less likely to cause damage to textile. The textile item is picked up in a gentle and non-destructive manner. Hence, the device can be applied for pickup delicate materials. The term textile item is used as an indication. The device can also be used to pick up at least part of a fabric, a woven material or a non-woven material. Examples of fabrics which could be picked up are linen, cotton, wool, etc. Where the term ‘textile’ is indicated also the terms fabric, woven fabric or non-woven fabric can be used. Non-limiting examples of textile items are garments like a top, shirt, blouse, sweater, trousers and/or a dress but also towels, sheets, napkins, duvets, covers etcetera. It is also conceivable that the device according to the present invention is used to pick up medical sheets.
The device according to the invention could also be referred to as gripper, air-flow gripper or Coanda gripper. The device typically makes use of compressed air. It is also conceivable that pressurized air is applied. At least one air outlet is typically configured to provide a laminar air flow. The part of the textile item can be a predetermined part, such as but not limited to: a corner, an edge, a corner region, shoulder part, collar, sleeve, button and/or zipper. The air inlet is typically configured to be connected to at least one air supply. This could for example be an external air supply. It is also conceivable that the device according to the present invention comprises at least one air supply for the provision of air, in particular compressed air. In a beneficial embodiment, the air guiding part comprises at least one turbulator element preferably configured create at least one turbulent boundary layer at the guiding surface. At least one turbulator element can configured to turn a laminar boundary layer into a turbulent boundary layer. A turbulator element can for example be applied to prevent flutter of the textile item within the air flow and/or to ensure that at least part of the textile follows the airflow in a stable manner. Due to the turbulator element being configured to create a turbulent boundary layer the air distribution of air expelled by the air outlet can be at least partially controlled. It can be useful to apply at least one turbulator element at a position where it is desired that the textile item can follow the air flow in a stable manner. It is conceivable that the device, and in particular the air guiding part comprises multiple turbulator elements. It may also be said that at least one guiding surface comprises at least one turbulator element.
Possibly, at least one turbulator element is formed by a mesh. The mesh could for example be a woven mesh and/or an integrated mesh and/or a machined mesh. It is for example conceivable that at least one turbulator element is a machined mesh which is formed in the guiding surface. At least one turbulator element can be made of metal. At least one turbulator element may for example comprise metallic wires. At least one turbulator element is typically positioned at a predetermined position. However, it in particular beneficial if the turbulator element, for example a mesh, defines a predetermined shape and/or pattern. Hence, the distribution of air can be further controlled. The predetermined shape and/or pattern can for example be at least part of a wave, a triangle, a substantially straight line, a square and/or a circle.
The preferred position, shape and/or pattern of the turbulator element depend on the textile item characteristics, such as material, shape and the intended part thereof to be picked up. In addition to the enabling of controlled air distribution, at least one turbulator could also be used as gripping aid during gripping and/or clamping of part of the textile item.
it is also conceivable that at least one turbulator is formed by a baffle. In a preferred embodiment, at least one turbulator element is positioned upon the guiding surface. Since the air expelled by the air outlet is guided towards the guiding surface, by positioning of at least one turbulator element at the guiding surface the air flow can be further controlled. At least one turbulator element can for example be attached to the guiding surface. Preferably, at least part of the guiding surface is substantially flat. it was experimentally found that a substantially flat guiding surface provides a good guidance for the air flow. However, it is also conceivable that at least part of the guiding surface is partially curved. Preferably the guiding surface is of a limited dimension. lt is for example conceivable that the guiding surface is of predetermined dimensions in order to ensure that laminar flow of the air flow is enabled. Typically, at least part of the guiding surface is substantially smooth. This positively contributes to the air flow being able to follow the guiding surface in particular in a laminar manner. Hence, at least part of the guiding surface can form an obstruction free pathway for the air flow. Possibly, at least part of the guiding surface may be structured. lt is conceivable that at least part of the guiding surface comprises a surface structure configured to enable air distribution. A function of the surface structure could be the creation of a turbulent boundary layer. Hence, the structured part of the surface may basically form a turbulator element. Hence, it may be said that the surface structure could be an integrally formed turbulator element. Such embodiment is beneficial as it is relatively easy to produce. The surface structure can be applied where it is desired to enable the textile item to follow the air flow in a stable manner, thereby preventing flutter. With an embodiment of the device having a guiding surface which is at least partially smooth and/or which is at least partially structured, guiding of at least part of the air flow can be optimized in a relatively simple manner.
It is in particular beneficial if the surface structure defines a predetermined pattern.
The air distribution can be further optimized by such embodiment.
The predetermined pattern of the structured surface may for example be present in the shape of a triangle.
This can be useful in case a corner of the 5 textile item is to be picked up.
The triangle is preferably positioned such that a point of the triangle faces at least one air outlet.
This configuration could also be applied for an externally attached turbulator element.
The device preferably comprises at least one control unit configured to at least control the velocity and/or pressure of the air flow of the device.
The device may further comprise at least one drive unit.
Preferably, at least one air outlet is positioned substantially parallel to the guiding surface in particular such that air is expelled in a direction substantially parallel to the guiding surface.
In this manner, laminar flow of the expelled air is assisted.
It further contributes to the ability of the expelled air being guided along the guiding surface such that a lifting force is created which can pick up at least part of the textile item.
It is conceivable that multiple air outlets are applied.
Preferably the air outlets are positioned substantially parallel.
It is also conceivable that the air outlets are positioned in a circular {or donut) configuration.
In such embodiment, it is conceivable that the guiding surface encloses the air outlets.
It is also possible that multiple guiding surfaces are applied.
In case multiple air outlets are applied, it is beneficial if each air outlet is positioned substantially parallel to at least part of a guiding surface. lt is also conceivable that the device comprises at least two air guiding parts and at least two air outlet, wherein the air guiding parts oppose each other such that part of textile item which is to be picked can be substantially enclosed by the air guiding parts.
Preferably, at least one air outlet comprises at least one nozzle, preferably a slit nozzle.
The presence of a nozzle may contribute to more controlled expelling of air.
The air outlet or air opening is preferably relatively small.
Air is typically expelled at a relatively high velocity.
The presence of a nozzle, in particular a slit nozzle, may further contribute to control the direction and/or characteristics of the air flow.
The air opening of the air outlet or nozzle can for example have a diameter in the range of 0.1 and 0.3 mm, for example of about 0.2mm.
The air outlet and/or the air guiding part may further comprise at least one air distribution section. Such air distribution section may contribute to controlled distribution of air from the air outlet, or nozzle if applied, to the guiding surface. Such air distribution section may for example be at least partially substantially cubical, spherical and/or rectangular.
Preferably the air distribution section comprises a slit through which the expelled air is released. A non-limiting example is an air distribution section which has a width between 25 and 75 mm, for example of about 50mm. The dimensions of the device can be adapted to its application. A relatively large guiding surface and/or air distribution section can be applied in case a relatively large part, such as an edge, of the textile item is to be picked.
Typically, at least one air inlet is larger than at least one air outlet. Hence, the inlet surface of the air inlet is typically larger than the outlet surface of the air outlet. Preferably, at least one air inlet is provided at a distance from at least one air outlet.
lt is for example conceivable that at least one air inlet is provided at an upper region of the device such that (compressed) air is let into the interior of the device from a top side of the device and that at least one air outlet is provided at a bottom region of the device.
In a preferred embodiment, the device comprises an internal structure configured to enable air distribution within the device. This may be beneficial for control of the outflow of air.
In yet another preferred embodiment, the device comprises at least one clamping element configured to clampingly grip at least part of the picked up textile item. Hence, after part of the textile is picked up by the air flow experiencing the Coanda effect, the lifted part of the textile item can be mechanically gripped. The clamping element can for example cooperate with at least part of the air guiding part, in particular the guiding surface. Due to the combination of the use of an air flow and a clamping element, the clamping can be more gentle. The clamping element comes in when the part of the textile item is yet brought into position to be clamped. Hence, clamping of the textile part can be further controlled. Preferably, the clamping element is displaceable, in particular pivotable, connected to the air guiding part. It is also conceivable that the device comprises at least on gripping mouth which is configured for clampingly gripping of at least part of the textile item after it being picked up. Possibly, part of the air guiding part and at least one clamping element form such gripping mouth. In a further embodiment, the gripping mouth may comprise at least one boundary element configured to at least partially interrupt the airflow. The boundary element(s) may form part of the air guiding part and/or of the clamping element, if applied. Preferably, the gripping mouth comprises at least two opposing boundary elements, wherein the boundary elements are configured to at least partially interrupt the airflow and/or to guide the airflow. The boundary elements are preferably positioned such that they at least partially enclose the guiding surface of the air guiding part. Typically, after the part of the textile item is gripped, the air flow can be stopped. The device may further comprise at least one secondary air outlet configured for exhaust air compensation. The device according to the present invention could be applied in a system for picking up at least part of a textile item. It is conceivable that the device comprises connection elements configured to implement the device in such system. The invention also relates to the use of a device according to the present invention, in particular for picking up at least part of a textile item, preferably in combination with a neural network.
The invention further relates to a method for gripping at least part of a textile, preferably by making use of a device according to the present invention, the method comprising the steps of providing at least one air flow which is guided along a guiding surface and picking up at least part of the textile item via a lifting force created by the air flow which is guided along the guiding surface. The method may further comprise the step of clampingly gripping the picked up part of the textile item. In case the device comprises a gripping mouth and/or clamping element, it is conceivable that the air flow is stopped after part of the textile item is clampingly gripped by the gripping mouth and/or the clamping element.
The invention will be further elucidated by means of non-limiting exemplary embodiments illustrated in the following figures, in which: - figure 1a and 1b show a first embodiment of a device according to the present invention; and
- figure 2 shows a second embodiment of a device according to the present invention. Within these figures, similar reference numbers correspond to similar or equivalent elements or features.
Figures 1a and 1b show a first embodiment of a device 1 according to the present invention. The device 1 is configured for picking up at least part of a textile item 10. Further, the device 1 comprises an air guiding part 4 configured for guiding at least part of an air flow in at least one predetermined direction. In the shown embodiment, the air guiding part 4 comprises a guiding surface 5, which is in the shown embodiment substantially flat. The air outlet 3 and the guiding surface 5 are positioned such that at least part of the air flow which is expelled from the air outlet 3 is guided along the guiding surface 5 such that a lifting force is created which can pick up at least part of the textile item 10. This effect is shown in the figures. Figure 1a shows an initial situation wherein the textile item 10 is in an initial state, positioned upon a surface. After an air flow is actuated, air will be expelled from the air outlet 3. Due to the created lifting force the textile item 10 is guided towards the guiding surface 5. The arrows indicate the displacement of the textile item 10. Further, the air guiding part 4 comprises a turbulator element 6 configured create at least one turbulent boundary layer at the guiding surface 5. The turbulator element 6 is in the shown embodiment formed by a mesh. The turbulator element 6 is positioned upon the guiding surface 5. It is however, also conceivable that the turbulator element 6 forms integral part of the guiding surface 5. The turbulator element 6 is present in the shape of a triangle. This is beneficial since the item 10 to be picked is in the specific situation a corner and the triangle is positioned such that is can prevent the corner from fluttering. The device 1 may optionally comprise a control unit and/or a driving unit (not shown). In the shown embodiment, the device 1, and in particular the air guiding part 5, comprises an air distribution section 7. The air distribution section 7 comprises a slit through which the expelled air is released and basically divided over the guiding surface 5.
