Description
A glass wall construction The invention relates to a glass wall construction com- prising a wall side attachment and a doorframe side attachment, wherein opposite edges of a glass window are respectively en- gaged by the said wall side attachment and doorframe side at- tachment.
In the prior art the design of the glass wall construc- tion is quite bulky to meet capability requirements of maintain- ing integrity of the glass wall construction over a prescribed minimum period of time, particularly during fire conditions.
It is an object of the invention to provide such a glass wall construction which is provided with a slim and ele- gant outer appearance, without compromising however the capabil- ity of the wall construction to withstand for a prescribed pe- riod of time the deteriorating effects of a one-sided fire, that is to say to maintain the integrity of the wall over the pre- scribed period of time despite the occurrence of such a fire.
DE 20 2013 103 100 discloses a surface element of fire protection glazing, in particular a glass door for fire protec- tion purposes to prevent fire and smoke from passing through from one room to another room in the event of a fire. The ele- ment has a fire protection pane containing a fire protection agent, which is held by a frame that extends from both sides of the fire protection pane arranged and interconnected by a con- necting device frame profiles, wherein -a. the frame profiles are arranged on both sides of the fire protection pane so as to cantilever over the edges in such a way that a groove-shaped free space is provided between the frame profiles on both sides, in which the connecting device is arranged, and wherein -b. a moulded strip made of fire protection material is arranged in the free space, covering or enclosing the connecting device, and -c. the connecting device consists of an essentially pot-shaped connector sleeve, the bottom of which has a threaded part that can be screwed into one frame profile and its wall with a transverse bore and a connecting bolt with a threaded part for connection to the other (opposite) frame profile and a cylinder part for insertion into the cavity of the cup-shaped connector sleeve, which cylinder part is provided with an
- 2 = annular groove, as well as a fixing element for positively fix- ing the connecting bolt in the connecting sleeve.
DE 20 2013 100 184 also discloses fire protection glaz- ing to prevent fire and smoke from penetrating from one room to another in the event of a fire. This glazing has a flush-fitting door leaf, an upper part and frameless glass surfaces on both sides of the door leaf and the upper part as fixed lateral ele- ments, wherein the combination of the following features is ap- plied: - 1.1 Each glass surface consists of a fire protection pane which has glass panes spaced parallel to one another by means of an edge seal, the space enclosed by the edge seal be- tween the glass panes is filled with a fire protection gel, - 1.2 the edge bond of the fire protection panes is offset inward in the area of the abutting edges that directly adjoin the door leaf, forming a groove, - 1.3 in the area of the lateral abutting edges of the door leaf one of the glass panes of the fire protection panes jumps back against the other to form a stepped rebate, - 1.4 the door leaf consists of wood and / or wood- based materials and corresponds to the stepped rebates formed on the glass surfaces with corresponding strip-shaped stop pro- files, and -1.5 the door leaf is pivotably mounted with concealed fittings in the floor (floor spring) and on the upper part.
According to the invention a glass wall construction according to the preamble is proposed, wherein the wall side at- tachment comprises a combination of oppositely positioned L- shape connectors fixed to the wall and with glazing tape between each L-shaped connector and the glass window, and the doorframe side attachment comprises a doorframe side profile embodied with two opposite steel frame portions and a gypsum portion immedi- ately adjacent to and between the opposite steel frame portions, wherein only glazing tapes are provided between the respective steel frame portions and the glass window, that is to say with- out any glazing beads, and that legs of oppositely positioned L- shape connectors that are fixed to the same wall point towards each other.
Among the preferable features of the glass wall con- 40 struction according to the invention are that:
- 3 = — the L-shaped connectors are embodied in steel.
— the glazing tapes are intumescent glazing tapes.
- ceramic tape is applied between the wall and the L- shaped connectors.
— intumescent tape is applied on an edge of the glass window facing the wall.
Surprisingly the glass window construction of the in- vention is not only slim and pleasing to the eye, but also meets the requirements of fire resistance although in one aspect the glass window construction merely amounts to securing that the glass window snugly fits between the respective steel frame por- tions with an edge of the glass window engaging the gypsum por- tion. The fact that this is indeed surprising is clear when one realizes that with a one-sided fire the glass window may bend approximately 15 cm towards the fire, The invention will hereinafter be further elucidated with reference to the drawing of an exemplary embodiment of a glass wall construction according to the invention that is not limiting as to the appended claims.
In the drawing: -figure 1 shows a side view of the glass window con- struction of the invention; -figure 2 shows a horizontal sectional view of the glass window construction of the invention.
Whenever in the figures the same reference numerals are applied, these numerals refer to the same parts.
Figure 1 provides a side view at a glass wall construc- tion. Figure 1 is however only provided for reference purposes regarding figure 2, since the details of the invention are only clearly displayed in figure 2.
Figure 2 shows that the glass wall construction 1 com- prises a wall side attachment 2 and a doorframe side attachment
3. Opposite edges 4, 5 of a glass window 6 are respectively en- gaged by the said wall side attachment 2 and doorframe side at- tachment 3.
The wall side attachment 2 comprises a combination of oppositely positioned (steel) L-shape connectors 7, 8 fixed to the wall 9 and with (ceramic) glazing tape 10, 11 between each L-shaped connector 7, 8 and the glass window 6. Usually there is 40 ceramic tape between the wall 9 and the L-shaped connectors 7,
- 4 —
8. Figure 2 shows that the legs of the oppositely positioned L- shape connectors 7, 8 that are fixed to the same wall 9 point towards each other. The doorframe side attachment 3 comprises a doorframe side profile 12 embodied with two opposite steel frame portions 13, 14 and a gypsum portion 15 immediately adjacent to and be- tween the opposite steel frame portions 13, 14. The essence of the invention is that only (intumescent) glazing tapes 16, 17 are provided between the respective steel frame portions 13, 14 and the glass window 6. In other words: there are no glazing beads engaging the glass window 6. All in all the glass window 6 snugly fits between the respective steel frame portions 13, 14 with an edge 5 of the glass window 6 engaging the gypsum portion
15.
Although the invention has been discussed in the fore- going with reference to an exemplary embodiment of the glass window construction of the invention, the invention is not re- stricted to this particular embodiment which can be varied in many ways without departing from the invention. The discussed exemplary embodiment shall therefore not be used to construe the appended claims strictly in accordance therewith. On the con- trary the embodiment is merely intended to explain the wording of the appended claims without intent to limit the claims to this exemplary embodiment. The scope of protection of the inven- tion shall therefore be construed in accordance with the ap- pended claims only, wherein a possible ambiguity in the wording of the claims shall be resolved using this exemplary embodiment.
