Description
Collapsible lift and transport cart The present invention relates to a collapsible lift and transport cart for the distribution of goods, especially a cart that is suited to be transported with another (larger) means of transport and which may flexibly be used in various environments where little space is available.
The typical delivery journey from products from a location of origin to a final delivery destination may be broken down into three phases: the first mile, the middie mile,
and the last mile.
The first mile of a product’s trip usually takes it from a location of origin (e.g. a production facility) to a warehouse, the middie mile takes it from the warehouse to a distribution hub and the last mile is where large shipments of goods are split up in individual deliveries to multiple final delivery destinations.
The final delivery destination may for instance be a shop, a catering facility, an industrial facility or a personal residence.
Especially this last part of the delivery journey requires a high level of flexibility as the circumstantial situations will vary, the volume of the products to be delivered will vary, the transport means from which the last mile of distribution starts will vary and the final delivery location will vary.
Partly as a result of new technologies and market dynamics there is an actual search for the improvement of the last mile distribution fleet of the future wherein various transport options - like for instance electric vehicles, drones, drivers, cabs, bikers, walkers - may be used side by side.
A further relevant issue in the search for optimising last mile distribution is that this part of the distribution phase often takes place in crowded urban areas where more and more strict environmental regulations must be observed.
An actual development is the progressive adoption of electric cars like battery-powered and fuel-cell electric powered electric driven vehicles due to lower emissions, lower maintenance costs, and new vehicle designs that are more easy to optimise for their function.
The collapsible lift and transport cart according to the present invention is especially suited, but not exclusively suited, to be carried along with an electric driven last mile distribution vehicle.
A problem is that as an important link in the last mile distribution phase there is a demand for a collapsible lift and transport cart that requires limited space when carried along with a distribution modularity, that is easy to unfold and that is flexible in use lifting goods from the distribution modularity, that is flexible in moving the goods to their final destination, that is flexible in unloading the goods on the final destination and is easy to fold again and be stored again on/in the distribution modularity.
This problem is solved with a collapsible lift and transport cart, comprising: a flat base frame supported by at least one wheel; an elongated guide stand that is on one side lockable pivotable connected to the base frame; a flat load carrier that is on one side lockable pivotable and slideable connected to the guide stand; and a drive for moving the load carrier along the guide stand; wherein the load carrier on a position at a distance from the pivotable connection of the load carrier and the guide stand is provided with at least one roll element. Such a lift and transport cart is collapsible to a flat package with a compact volume if and when the flat base frame, the elongated guide stand and the flat load carrier are brought into a more or less parallel orientation making the lift and transport cart easy portable and also easy to install in a distribution modularity like for instance an (electric) van, truck or boat. The lift and transport cart may also easy be unfolded by pivoting the elongated guide stand relative to the flat base frame and by pivoting the flat load carrier relative to the guide stand such that both the flat base frame and the flat load carrier are more or less in a parallel position as well as that the flat base frame and the flat load carrier are more or less perpendicular to the elongated guide stand. In this unfolded position of the flat base frame, the elongated guide stand and the flat load carrier these element may be locked in their relative unfolded position. This methodology of unfolding, and reverse of folding, the lift and transport cart enables it to set up the cart in seconds without any tools required. In the unfolded situation the load carrier may be brought under a load to be moved by riding the flat base frame towards the position where the load is to be picked up.
The at least one roll element on the load carrier at a position at a distance from the pivotable connection of the load carrier and the guide stand enables an easy access of the load carrier under the load to be picked up. As the flat load carrier is on one side slideable connected to the guide stand the load carrier may subsequently be lifted so that the load carrier fully supports the load to be moved and the lift and transport cart may be rolled - over the at least one wheel supporting the flat base frame supported — to a location where the load is to be delivered. There the flat load carrier may be slided down along the guide stand until the load is resting on the delivery surface. The lift and transport cart may then be moved away such that the load carrier is moved away under the load.
The load carrier is preferably extendable. In case an extendable load carrier is used the load depth increases and also enables to pick up loads where there is no space under the load for access of the base frame. As for the load carrier different types of carriers may be used, for instance stationary oriented forks, adjustable or re- pinnable forks or a load platform. It is also possible to fit a platform over the forks of a load carrier. A further option is to add a boom attachment to the cart that could be attached to the load carrier so to transform the lifting cart into a vertical crane or hoist.
The at least one roll element of the load carrier may be moveable connected with the load carrier so that it is moveable from a position wherein the roll element is substantially housed in the load carrier to a position wherein the roll element is at least partially protruding from a flat side of the load carrier. The at least one moveable roll element of the load carrier enables to lift the load with the load carrier while the weight of the lad may be carried by the former support surface of the load. The result is that the load may be rolled off the support surface while the flat base frame and the elongated guide stand are not carrying the weight (yet). Especially in situation where there is no access for the flat base frame under the load to be picked up this is very advantageous. In the situation that the load carrier is extendable the load carrier may pick up also heavy loads from a surface while the base frame is not under the load. Such situation could result in an unstable situation of the loaded lift and transport cart (and even in topping over of the lift and transport cart) if the load carrier was not supported by the roll element resting on the former support surface of the load. By moving the load away from the surface the load carrier may be retracted (telescoped to a shorter length) such that the center of gravity of the load is more or less above the base frame and a more stable situation is realised. Such a positioning of the center of gravity of the load also enables to test the correct stable positioning of a lifted load on the load carrier by initially, when the load is only lifted over a limited height, checking whether the load is tilting in a specific direction. In case the load is tilting the initial lifting is to be cancel to reposition the load on the load carrier. The combination of the extendable load carrier and the at least one roll element of the load carrier enlarge the lifting range / handling range of the collapsible cart according to the present invention, which is especially advantageous in the jungle of the last mile where often only very limited space is available (e.g. lifting of loads from a truck with uneven pavement, wheels of a truck that transport the goods to be lifted to or from a location and so on but also delivery surfaces that are not accessible on the underside for the base frame).
The collapsible cart may comprises a drive for moving the relative position of the load carrier roll element to the load carrier. With such a drive the load carrier roll element may be moved form a position wherein the at least one troll element is at least partially stowed away in the load carrier to a position wherein the at least one roll element protrudes (on the underside) of the load carrier. The stowed away position of the roll element makes the load carrier relative slender so it fits also a limited space below a load to be moved. Furthermore the driven movement of the at least one roll element to a position protruding from the underside of the load carrier realises the lifting of the load (which may be combined with sliding the load carrier along the guide stand) which is supportive in the effective lifting of loads.
The base frame and load carrier may be both lockable in a position substantially rectangular to the guide stand, such that the base frame and load carrier are parallel. For a proper functioning of the collapsible cart the base frame and load carrier may preferably be locked in an more or less rectangular position to the guide stand.
The drive for moving the load carrier along the guide stand may be an electrical drive or a manual drive. Depending on the conditions of use, such as, for example, the weight of the loads to be moved, it may be decided whether or not to mechanize the drive of the load carrier along the guide stand. And also the drive for moving the relative position of the load carrier roll element to the load carrier may be an electrical drive or a manual drive depending on the conditions of use.
In an embodiment of the collapsible cart according to the present invention the drive for moving the load carrier along the guide stand and the drive for moving the relative position of the load carrier roll element to the load carrier are combined. Combining the drives, especially when being electrical drives, may be cost efficient, leads to a limitation of weight and probably volume. In case of using one or more electrical drives in the collapsible cart the battery/batteries for feeding such 5 drive/drives may be loaded during downtime of the collapsible cart; for instance during transportation of the cart from one location of use to another. In a further embodiment the flat base frame may be provided with at least two wheels at the side of the connection of the base frame and the guide stand. The wheels at the side of the guide stand are supportive in easy moving the collapsible cart and also enable to lift the base frame in the direction of the guide stand during transportation of the cart. The wheels will also add to the manoeuvrability of the cart according to the invention, especially on uneven surfaces.
lt is further an option that the at least two wheels of the flat base frame are located on opposite sides of the guide stand. As base frame supported by two wheels on opposite sides of the guide stand the collapsible carts is stable to be moved (rolled) in unfolded loaded and unloaded position.
To even make the movement (rolling) of the cart in an unfolded state even simpler the base frame may be provided with at least one additional wheel at a distance from the connection of the base frame and the guide stand. To enable less muscle strength for extending an extendable load carrier the cart may comprises a drive for extending the load carrier.
The present invention will be further elucidated on the basis of the non-limitative exemplary embodiments shown in the following figures, herein shows: figure 1A a perspective view of a collapsible lift and transport cart according to the present invention in an folded out state; figure 1B a side view of the collapsible lift and transport cart as shown in figure 1A in a folded out state; figure 2A a perspective view of a collapsible lift and transport cart as shown in the figures 1A and 1B in a collapsed state;
figure 2B a side view of the collapsible lift and transport cart as shown in the figures 1A, 1B and 2A in a collapsed state; figure 3 a perspective view of a detail of a load carrier part of the collapsible lift and transport cart according to the present invention; figure 4 a cut-away side view of an elongated guide stand showing an electric drive of the load carrier sliding along a guide stand; figure 5A a perspective view of a flat load carrier in a contracted state; figure 5b a perspective view of the flat load carrier as shown in figure 5A in an extended state; and figure 6 a side view of a part of a last mile distribution truck carrying a load that is unloaded with a lift and transport cart according to the present invention. Figure 1A shows a collapsible lift and transport cart 1 in an folded out state. A flat base frame 2 is supported by two smaller front wheels 3 and two larger rear wheels
4. Close to the rear wheels 4 an elongated guide stand 5 is pivotable connected to the base frame 2. On the opposite side of the connection of the elongated guide stand 5 and the base frame 2 the elongated guide stand 5 is pivotable connected with the a flat load carrier 6 which is here illustrated in an extended state. The load carrier 6 is provided with two sets of handles 7, 8. The first set of handles for controlling: A) the displacements of the transport cart 1; B) an electrical drive incorporated in the elongated guide stand 5 (not shown here; for details see figure 4) for sliding the load carrier 6 along guide stand 5; and C) for locking and unlocking the pivotable connections of both the pivotable connection of the base frame 2 and the guide stand 5 as well as the pivotable connection of the guide stand 5 and the load carrier 6. The second set of handles 8 of the load carrier 6 are for extending a front part 9 of the load carrier 6 to enhance the reach of the collapsible lift and transport cart 1. The load carrier 6 is here embodied as a set of forks. On the tip of the front part 9 of the load carrier 6 are two roll elements in the form of wheels 10 provided. In figure 1B the collapsible lift and transport cart 1 in folded out state as shown in figure 1A is now shown in a side view. In figure 2A collapsible lift and transport cart 1 as shown in the figures 1A and 1B is shown is a collapsed state. The forks 9 of the load carrier 6 are rotated to a position wherein they are parallel with the guide stand 5 and also the flat base frame 2 the
(although hardly visible in this figure) is parallel with the guide stand 5 and the forks 9 of the load carrier 6. The collapsed lift and transport cart 1 is shown in figure 12B in a side view. In the collapsed state the lift and transport cart 1 takes up very little space so it is easy to take along with a transport modularity (truck, car, van, boat) with which goods are transported to a final destination.
In figure 3 tips of the front part 9 of the load carrier 6 are shown wherein moveable wheels 10 are housed. The wheels 10 are moveable from a position wherein they are not or only for a limited part protrude from the underside of the front part 9 of the load carrier 6 to a position wherein they protrude more so they are able to support the front part 9 of the load carrier 6 when resting on a surface. This makes it possible to omit contra weights in the lift and transport cart 1. In the retracted state of the wheels 10 (not or only limited protruding situation) the limited thickness of the front part 9 of the load carrier 6 enables relative easy access to the underside of a load to be lifted and moved. Figure 4 shows a cut-away side view of the elongated guide stand 5 showing an electric drive of the load carrier 6 sliding along the guide stand 5. In the guide stand 5 an (electric) cylinder 11 is housed that via a cable 12 over pulleys 13 pulls the load carrier 6 downwards against a spring tension provided by a spring 14. In figure 5A the flat load carrier 6 is depicted in a contracted state, while in figure 5b the flat load carrier 6 is depicted in the extended state that is also depicted in figures 1A and 1B.
In figure 6 in side view the lift and transport cart 1 is shown while lifting a load 20 form the rear of a truck 21 with a rear wheel 22. The flat load carrier 6 is extended and the front part of forks 9 of the flat load carrier 6 are positioned under the load
20. Also clearly visible is that the wheels 10 on the tip of the flat load carrier 6 are in an extended (lowered) state so that they lift the load 20 from the rear of the truck
21. The weight of the load 20 is now substantially carried by the extended wheels 10 which wheels are supported by the rear of a truck 21. The support found by the wheels 10 on the rear of the truck 21 prevents the transport cart 1 from tipping over while the centre of gravity of the load 20 lies before the flat base frame 2 of the lift and transport cart 1. The next step in off-loading the load 20 is to retract the extended load carrier 6 to the position as shown in figure 5A during which retracting movement the wheels 10 will roll over the rear of the truck 21. The retraction of the load carrier 6 also leads to the centre of gravity of the load 20 to be displace to a position above the flat base frame 2. The loaded lift and transport cart 1 (with retracted load carrier 6) may then be rolled to a location of delivery of the load 20.
