Description
A plant cultivation system comprising cultivation trays and plant plugs, baskets for use in such a system, and a method for cultivating plants The invention relates to a plant cultivation system comprising at least one plant cultivating tray comprising a multitude of plug holders, each plug holder comprising a cup having a substantially cylindrical or frustoconical inner side wall, and a multitude of plant plugs, each plug provided with a seed, a root or a rooted plant, wherein each plug comprises a substantially cylindrical or frustoconical outer side wall. Although in the preferred embodiment the side walls of the plugs and the cups have a round circular cross section, the terms cylindrical and frustoconical should be understood as to include any closed circumference shape, such as a square or another polygonal. Such systems are used in methods for cultivating a plant, wherein a plug is formed from a substrate, in which substrate a seed or a root of the plant is placed, which substrate containing the seed or the plant is placed in a holder for the plant to grow. The invention in particular relates to the raising of young plants, in particular flowering green plants, in particular epiphytes, more in particular of the orders bromeliaceae, araceae and asparagales, even more in particular of the families orchidaceae (apostasioideae and monandriae), specifically of the subfamilies cypridedioideae, vanilloideae, epidendroideae and orchidoideae.
Such plants can be propagated from seeds, for example, or from cuttings. It is known to place young plants or plant seeds in a substrate consisting of a carrier (a so-called "plug) consisting of a material rich in fibre which is held together by means of an adhesive or a basket. Many orchids are perennial epiphytes, which grow anchored to trees or shrubs, and have aerial roots that can sometimes grow to be a few meters long. A problem which therefore occurs in particular with the initial cultivation of epiphytic orchids and similar plants is that the aerial roots of orchids want to grow relatively long and in all directions in a short period of time.
The object of the invention is to provide a system for cultivating such plants, providing a high quality in a simple, reliable, efficient and inexpensive manner.
To that end the radial diameter(s) of the outer side wall of said plug are substantially smaller than the radial diameter(s) of the inner side wall of said cup, seen at identical axial locations of both the plug and the cup, such that there is a space between the outer side wall of the plug and the inner side wall of the cup, when the plug is held in the cup; and the system further comprises a multitude of baskets, each basket designed for holding one of said plugs radially centered in one of said cups and maintaining said space between the outer side wall of the plug and the inner side wall of the cup; wherein each basket is provided with: cup engagement members extending in a substantially cylindrical or frustoconical cup engagement surface so as to engage the inner side wall of the cup; plug support members extending in a substantially cylindrical or frustoconical plug support surface so as to engage and hold said outer side wall of said plug, and wherein said plug support members cover not more than 50% of the outer side wall of the plug, such that roots of the plant are allowed to grow from within the plug into the space between the outer side wall of the plug and the inner side wall of the cup.
In the preferred embodiment the basket comprises an upper ring shaped member, a lower bottom member and a multitude of strip shaped connecting members interconnecting the upper and lower members, wherein a part of said connecting members form said cup engagement members designed to rest along at least part of their length against the side wall of the cup and another part of said connecting members form said plug support members designed to rest along at least part of their length against the side wall of the plug.
Said cup engagement members and said plug support members are preferably arranged alternatingly around the circumference of the basket.
Said connecting members preferably comprise three cup engagement members and three plug support members.
Preferably said plug support members cover not more than 25% of the outer side wall of the plug.
The basket is preferably provided at its bottom side with a spacer designed to keep the bottom of the plug at a distance from the bottom of a cup.
The basket is preferably made of a plastic material or a biodegradable material, preferably a plastic biodegradable material.
The invention also relates to a basket for use in such a system, wherein said basket is designed for holding a plant plug radially centered in a cup and maintaining a space between the outer side wall of the plug and the inner side wall of the cup; wherein said basket is provided with: cup engagement members extending in a substantially cylindrical or frustoconical cup engagement surface so as to engage the inner side wall of the cup; plug support members extending in a substantially cylindrical or frustoconical plug support surface so as to engage and hold said outer side wall of said plug, and wherein said plug support members cover not more than 50% of the plug support surface, such that in use roots of a plant are allowed to grow from within the plug into the space between the outer side wall of the plug and the inner side wall of the cup.
A method for cultivating a plant comprising: providing at least one plant cultivating tray comprising a multitude of plug holders, each plug holder comprising a cup having a substantially cylindrical or frustoconical inner side wall; providing a multitude of plant plugs, each plug provided with a seed, a root or a rooted plant, wherein each plug comprises a substantially cylindrical or frustoconical outer side wall; placing each of said plant plugs in one of said cups using support means; wherein the radial diameter(s) of the outer side wall of said plug are substantially smaller than the radial diameter(s) of the inner side wall of said cup, seen at identical axial locations of both the plug and the cup, such that there is a space maintained by said support means, such as a basket, between the outer side wall of the plug and the inner side wall of the cup; such that roots of the plant are allowed to grow from within the plug into the space between the outer side wall of the plug and the inner side wall of the cup.
Preferably the space the outer side wall of the plug and the inner side wall of the cup is at least 4 mm, preferably at least 6 mm, wide.
Preferably said plug support members cover not more than 25% of the plug support surface. The basket is preferably provided at its bottom side with a spacer designed to keep the bottom of a plug inside the basket at a distance from the bottom of a cup in which the plug is placed. The basket is preferably made of a plastic material or a biodegradable material, preferably a plastic biodegradable material.
Two separated or semi-separated substrate plug parts may be formed, with the seed or a root of the plant being placed between said at least two substrate parts before the substrate containing the seed or the plant is placed in the basket. In this way it is possible in a simple manner to assemble a plug which can be processed in a usual manner, whilst any damage to the roots of the plant is limited as much as possible. The substrate plug is preferably formed of a fibre mixture and an adhesive, such that the substrate parts form fixed units. The fibre mixture comprises coconut fibre, peat or other organic materials, for example, or an inorganic fibre material such as rock wool, for example.
The holder is preferably frustoconical in shape. Preferably, a multitude of holders are formed in mutually adjacent relationship in a tray. The tray is preferably made of plastic material. The bottom of the holder is preferably provided with a hole for draining excess water.
The invention will now be explained in more detail with reference to an embodiment shown in the figures, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a basket; Figure 2 is a perspective view of the basket of figure 1 holding a substrate plug with a plant; Figure 3 is a top view of the basket of figure 1; Figure 4 is a perspective view of a system for cultivating orchids comprising a tray, and the baskets of figure 1, 2 and 3 holding a substrate plug with a plant; and Figure 5 is a cross sectional view of the system for cultivating orchids of figure 4.
According to figures 1, 2 and 3 a basket 12 holds a substrate 2 and an epiphytic orchid 13. According to figures 4 and 5 a cultivating tray 10 is provided comprising holders 11, wherein the baskets 12 are placed, holding the substrates 2 and epiphytic orchids 13 with aerial roots 14 propagating from seeds or cuttings.
The plugs 2 are formed by mixing a fibre mixture, such as coconut fibre or peat, for example, with an adhesive, such as a heated thermoplastic plastic material, in a manner which is known per se. The substrates 2 may be formed as two (or more) separate or semi-separate substrate parts that are held together by the baskets 12, for instance as shown and described in European patent application publication EP 2 280 971 Al, which is incorporated herein by reference.
The cultivating tray 10 is made of a plate of transparent material. The cultivating tray 10 comprises holders in the form of cups 11, which are interconnected by means of a plate-shaped material 18 near their upper openings. Along the circumferential edge, the plate-shaped material of the cultivating tray 10 is provided with a substantially vertical circumferential wall 19, which stabilizes the tray, and which is slightly outwardly inclined, so that several nested cultivating trays 10 can be stacked during storage.
The cups 11 each have a semi-frustoconical shape, i.e. each cup 11 has a circumferential wall 7 which, seen in sectional view, is circular in shape, with the diameter of the circle becoming smaller towards the bottom. At the bottom side of the cup 11, the circumferential wall is connected to a bottom part 20, in which a drain hole 22 is present. The baskets 12 are designed for holding a plant plug 2 radially centered in a cup 11, maintaining a 5 space between the outer side wall of the plug 2 and the inner side wall of the cup 11. As an example, near the bottom of the plug 2, the diameter of the cup may be 34 mm, the diameter of the plug 2 may be 20 mm, whereby the space between the plug 2 and the inner side wall of the plug 2 wherein the aerial roots 14 can grow may be 7 mm wide. The baskets 12 are made up of a biodegradable plastic and comprise an upper ring 15, a smaller lower ring or disc 16, and six connecting strip shaped wires 17a, 17b, which connect the upper ring to the lower ring or disc 16. Three wires 17b form cup engagement members, and are shaped such that a length thereof extends in a frustoconical cup engagement surface, and are thereby designed to rest against the inner side of the side wall 7 of the cup 11. Three wires 17b form plug {5 support members, and are shaped such that a length extends in a frustoconical plug support surface, and are thereby designed to rest against the outer side wall of the plug 2. The three cup engagement wires 17a and the three plug support wires 17b are arranged alternatingly around the circumference of the basket 12, such that the lateral position of the basket 12 in the cup 11 as well as the lateral position of the plug 2 in the basket 12 is fixed by support in three directions.
The wires of the plug support members cover only a small portion (approximately 15%) of the outer side wall of the plug 2, whereby the roots 14 of the plant 13 are allowed to grow without substantial barriers from within the plug 2 into the space between the outer side wall of the plug 2 and the inner side of the side wall 7 of the cup 11, as shown in figure 5.
The basket 12 is provided at its bottom side with a spacer 23 formed by bent parts of the wires 17a, 17b and the ring or disc 16, designed to keep the bottom of the plug 2 at a distance from the bottom 20 of a cup 11. Water may pass through a drain hole 22 in the bottom of the cup 11. The space between the bottom side of the plug 2 and the bottom 20 of the cup is filled with tree bark chips 25 so as to provide an optimal moist environment in the cup.
