The roof air deflector assembly comprises a base mounted on the cab roof. The base has two upstanding lateral base sidewalls and a front base wall. The assembly further comprises a deflector panel pivotally mounted to the base. The deflector panel has two upstanding lateral panel sidewalls and a front panel wall. The deflector panel is dimensioned to surround the base such that lateral gaps are present between the upstanding lateral base sidewalls and the upstanding lateral panel sidewalls and a front gap is present between the front base wall and the front panel wall. The roof air deflector assembly further comprises at least one of first seals adapted to seal the lateral gaps between the upstanding lateral base sidewalls and the upstanding lateral panel sidewalls and a second seal adapted to seal the front gap between the front base wall and the front panel wall.
Description
P124790NL00 Title: A truck comprising a cab including a cab roof and a roof air deflector assembly The invention relates to a truck comprising a cab including a cab roof and a roof air deflector assembly for reducing aerodynamic drag mounted on the cab roof and extending upwards therefrom for reducing aerodynamic drag, said roof air deflector assembly comprising: - a base mounted on the cab roof, said base comprising two upstanding lateral base sidewalls; and - a deflector panel pivotally mounted to the base, said deflector panel having two upstanding lateral panel sidewalls and a front panel wall, the deflector panel being dimensioned to surround the base such that lateral gaps are present between the upstanding lateral base sidewalls and the upstanding lateral panel sidewalls, wherein the roof air deflector assembly comprises first seals adapted to seal the lateral gaps between the upstanding lateral base sidewalls and the upstanding lateral panel sidewalls.
Such a truck comprising a cab including a cab roof and a roof air deflector assembly for reducing aerodynamic drag mounted on the cab roof is known from DE2743203A1. Although the known roof air deflector assembly reduces the aerodynamic drag and thus is beneficial for the fuel economy, there is a constant desire in the field to improve the reduction of aerodynamic drag and a constant desire to improve fuel economy.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a truck comprising a cab including a cab roof and a roof air deflector assembly for reducing aerodynamic drag mounted on the cab roof with which the aerodynamic drag can be further reduced and thus the fuel economy can be improved.
According to the invention at least one of the objects is obtained by providing a truck according to claim 1. The invention is based on the insight that air can enter through the front gap from the outside to between the roof of the cab and the underside of the deflector panel and from there impacts the front of the trailer, thereby increasing drag. By in accordance with the invention providing a second seal adapted to seal the front gap between the front base wall and the front panel wall transversal air flows from the air deflector’s sides and/or air flows from the air deflector’s front side are at least reduced or can even be completely blocked, thereby reducing aerodynamic drag and improving fuel economy.
It is beneficial for the reduction of aerodynamic drag and fuel economy when the first and the second seal are integrated into a unitary air deflector seal.
In an embodiment of a truck according to the invention at least one of the first seals and the second seal comprises a first portion made of a rigid elastomer and a second portion made of a flexible elastomer. Preferably, each of the first seals comprises a first portion made of a rigid elastomer and a second portion made of a flexible elastomer, wherein each of the first portions of the first seals is fixedly attached to a respective upstanding lateral base sidewall, and wherein each of the second portions of the first seals extends toward and is in engaging contact with a respective upstanding lateral panel sidewall. The second portions of the first seals are in engaging contact with a respective upstanding lateral panel sidewall due to their flexible nature or by attaching the free end of the second portions to a respective upstanding lateral panel sidewall. Additionally or optionally the second seal comprises a first portion made of a rigid elastomer and a second portion made of a flexible elastomer, wherein the first portion of the second seal is fixedly attached to the front base wall, and wherein the second portion of the second seal extends toward and 1s in engaging contact with the front panel wall. The second portion of the second seal is in engaging contact with the front base wall due to its flexible nature or by attaching the free end of the second portion to the front base wall. In this manner the first portion of a rigid elastomer provides fixation on the respective wall of the base mounted on the cab roof and is resistant against undesired deformation over a prolonged period of time. The second portion of flexible elastomer is able to provide a seal between respective base walls and panel walls irrespective of the position in which the deflector panel is pivoted with regard to the base.
The invention will be further explained with reference to the Figures, in which a non-limiting exemplary embodiment of according to the invention is shown: Fig. 1 schematically shows an embodiment of a truck comprising a cab including a cab roof and a roof air deflector assembly for reducing aerodynamic drag mounted on the cab roof according to the invention in side view; Fig. 2 schematically shows the roof air deflector assembly of the truck shown in Fig. 1 in a front view partly in perspective in the lower position of the deflector panel; and Fig. 3 schematically shows the roof air deflector assembly of the truck shown in Fig. 1 in a front view partly in perspective in the upper position of the deflector panel.
In Fig. 1 an embodiment of a truck 1 comprising a cab 2 including a cab roof 3 and a roof air deflector assembly 4 for reducing aerodynamic drag mounted on the cab roof 3 and extending upwards therefrom for reducing aerodynamic drag is schematically shown in side view.
The roof air deflector assembly 4 comprises a base 5 mounted on the cab roof 3, which base 5 comprising two upstanding lateral base sidewalls 5A (only one visible in Fig. 1) and a front base wall 5B. The roof air deflector assembly 4 further comprises a deflector panel 6 pivotally mounted in any known manner to the base 5. The deflector panel 6 has two upstanding lateral panel sidewalls 6A (only one visible in Fig. 1) and a front panel wall 6B.
The deflector panel 6 is dimensioned to surround the base 5 such that lateral gaps are present between the upstanding lateral base sidewalls 5A and the upstanding lateral panel sidewalls 6A and a front gap is present between the front base wall 5B and the front panel wall 6B.
The roof air deflector assembly 4 in addition comprises first seals 7 (see Figs. 2 and 3) adapted to seal the lateral gaps between the upstanding lateral base sidewalls 5A and the upstanding lateral panel sidewalls 6B.
In Fig. 2 schematically the roof air deflector assembly of the truck is shown in a front view partly in perspective in the lower position of the deflector panel, i.e. in the position in which the deflector panel is pivoted downwards with regards to the cab roof, while in Fig. 3 the roof air deflector assembly is shown in the upper position of the deflector panel, i.e. in the position in which the deflector panel is pivoted away from the cab roof.
Each of the first seals 7 comprises a first portion 7A made of a rigid elastomer and a second portion 7B made of a flexible elastomer.
Each of the first portions 7A of the first seals 7 is fixedly attached to a respective upstanding lateral base sidewall 5A, and each of the second portions 7B of the first seals 7 extends toward and is in engaging contact with a respective upstanding lateral panel sidewall 6A.
The second portions 7B of the first seals 7 are in engaging contact with a respective upstanding lateral panel sidewall 6A due to their flexible nature or by attaching the free end of the second portions 7B to the respective upstanding lateral panel sidewall GA.
Although not shown in the drawings the roof air deflector assembly 4 further comprises a second seal adapted to seal the front gap between the front base wall 5B and the front panel wall 6B.
The second seal is similar in construction as the first seal and comprises a first portion made of a rigid elastomer and a second portion made of a flexible elastomer, wherein the first portion of the second seal is fixedly attached to the front base wall 5B, and wherein the second portion of the second seal extends toward and is in engaging contact with the front panel wall 6B.The first and the second seal can be integrated into a unitary air deflector seal.
