Abstract
Packaging particularly for fruit and other sensitive foodstuff, comprising a bottom, upstanding sidewalls rising from the bottom, said bottom and sidewalls together defining an interior of the packaging with a closable open top equipped 5 to receive a sealing sheet which is attachable to a top face of the upstanding sidewalls, and wherein neighbouring side— walls connect to each other through rounded corners, and the sidewalls bend inwardly between the corners and towards the interior of the packaging.
Description
Packaging particularly for fruit and other sensitive foodstuff The invention relates to a packaging particularly for fruit and other sensitive foodstuff, comprising a bottom, up- standing sidewalls rising from the bottom, said bottom and sidewalls together defining an interior of the packaging with a closable open top equipped to receive a sealing sheet which is attachable to a top face of the upstanding sidewalls, and wherein neighbouring sidewalls connect to each other through rounded corners.
Such a packaging has widespread use and is known from practice. It is an object of the invention to further develop this known packaging and to realize advantages which will be- come apparent from the following description.
The packaging of the invention has one or more of the following features as are itemized in the appended claims.
In a first aspect of the invention the sidewalls bend inwardly with a curvature between the corners and towards the interior of the packaging. This provides rigidity to the pack- aging making it suitable for relatively rough handling as well as promoting its suitability for stacking in a pile together with other packagings of the same design, whilst the content of the packagings remain at all times safeguarded against dam- age.
In a further aspect of the invention the bottom is also provided with a curvature by which the bottom bends in- wardly between the sidewalls towards the interior of the pack- aging. Practice has shown that this is a very suitable feature for limiting undesirable forces acting on the perishable and sensitive foodstuff, such as grapes, that is during use pro- vided in the interior of the packaging.
In a preferred embodiment the top face of the up- standing sidewalls is provided with aeration indents so as to arrange that after placement of a sealing sheet on the top face of the upstanding sidewalls to cover the interior of the packaging, aeration openings still remain that provide a gas connection between the interior of the packaging and the exte- rior of the packaging. This ensures that even with high piles of packagings the foodstuff inside of the packagings can be kept in optimum condition because of the aeration of the pack- agings that remains possible through the aeration openings.
Another beneficial feature of the invention is that the corners connecting the neighbouring sidewalls extend fur- ther downwards than the sidewalls so as to provide that when resting on a supporting surface, the packaging is substantial- ly supported at a lower part of the corners and the side-walls are substantially free from the supporting surface. This suit- ably arranges that when the packaging is loaded the corners are inclined to slightly collapse and to arrange that the cur- vature of the bottom of the packaging is lifted towards the interior of the packaging. This promotes indeed that adverse forces will be acting on the sensitive foodstuff inside of the packaging, even under severe circumstances and rough handling of the packaging of the invention.
The invention will hereinafter be further elucidated with reference to a drawing of a non-limiting exemplary embod- iment of the apparatus and its use in accordance with the in- vention.
In the drawing: -figure 1 shows a packaging of the invention in a side view from the long side; -figure 2 shows the packaging of figure 1 in a cross- sectional side view from the long side; -figure 3 shows the packaging of figure 1 in a cross- sectional side view from the short side; -figure 4 shows cross-sectional and isometric view at the packaging of the invention; and -figure 5 shows a top view at the packaging of the invention.
Whenever in the figures the same reference numerals are applied, these numerals refer to the same parts.
With reference to the appended figures the packaging 1 of the invention is shown which is particularly intended for packaging of fruit and other sensitive foodstuff. The packag- ing 1 comprises a bottom 2, upstanding sidewalls 3 rising from the bottom 2, wherein said bottom 2 and sidewalls 3 together define an interior 4 of the packaging 1 with a closable open top 5. This is all very clearly shown with reference to the appended figures 1 - 5.
At the top the packaging 1 is equipped to receive a sealing sheet (not shown) to close off the interior 4 of the packaging 1, and which is attachable to a top face 6 of the upstanding sidewalls 3 as is best shown in figure 4 and figure
5. Particularly these figures 4 and 5 also clearly show that neighbouring sidewalls 3 connect to each other through rounded corners 7.
Figure 5 is the best view to the feature of the in- vention that the sidewalls 3 bend inwardly with a curvature 3’ between the corners 7 and towards the interior 4 of the pack- aging 1.
Figures 2, 3 and 4 give the best view to the feature of the invention that the bottom 2 is also provided with a curvature 2' by which the bottom 2 bends inwardly between the sidewalls 3 and towards the interior 4 of the packaging 1.
Still another feature of the invention which is visi- ble in all figures 1 - 5 is that the top face 6 of the up- standing sidewalls 3 is provided with aeration indents 8 so as to arrange that after placement of a sealing sheet to cover the interior 4 of the packaging 1, which is to be connected to the top face 6 of the upstanding sidewalls 3, aeration open- ings will remain that provide a gas connection between the in- terior 4 of the packaging 1 and the exterior of the packaging
1.
As is best shown in figures 3 and 4 the corners 7 connecting the neighbouring sidewalls 3 extend further down- wards than the sidewalls 3 so as to provide that when resting on a supporting surface, the packaging will be substantially supported at the lowest part 7’ of the corners 7 and the side- walls 3 are substantially free from the supporting surface. This enables that when loaded the corners 7 are inclined to slightly collapse and to arrange that the curvature 2° of the bottom 2 of the packaging 1 will be slightly lifted.
Although the invention has been discussed in the foregoing with reference to an exemplary embodiment of the packaging of the invention, the invention is not restricted to this particular embodiment which can be varied in many ways without departing from the invention. The discussed exemplary embodiment shall therefore not be used to construe the append- ed claims strictly in accordance therewith. On the contrary the embodiment is merely intended to explain the wording of the appended claims without intent to limit the claims to this exemplary embodiment. The scope of protection of the invention shall therefore be construed in accordance with the appended claims only, wherein a possible ambiguity in the wording of the claims shall be resolved using this exemplary embodiment.
Aspects of the invention are itemized in the follow- ing section.

2. Packaging according to claim 1, characterized in that the bottom (2) is provided with a second curvature (2') by which the bottom (2) bends inwardly between the sidewalls (3) towards the interior (4) of the packaging (1).
3. Packaging according to claim 1 or 2, characterized in that the top face (6) of the upstanding sidewalls (3) is provid- ed with aeration indents (8) so as to arrange that after placement of the sealing sheet on the top face (6) of the upstanding sidewalls (3), aeration openings remain that provide a gas connection between the interior (4) of the packaging (1) and the exterior of the packaging (1).
4. Packaging according to any one of claims 1 - 3, character- ized in that the corners (7) connecting the neighbouring sidewalls (3) extend further downwards than the sidewalls (3) so as to provide that when resting on a supporting sur- face, the packaging is substantially supported at a lowest part (7') of the corners (7) and the sidewalls (3) are sub- stantially free from the supporting surface.
