Abstract

A packaging suitable for storing a food product such as fruit comprising a bottom 2 and upstanding sidewalls 3 defining an interior 4, open top 5 and a top edge 6 suitable for attaching a sealing sheet thereto. The side walls are curved 3’ towards the interior and are joined by corners 7. Preferably, the bottom also comprises a curvature (2’, figure 4). The top edge may further comprise indents 8 acting as air vents. Ideally, the corners act as feet (7’, figure 4) for the packaging that extend below the side walls. Preferably, when the container is loaded, the corners are inclined to slightly collapse and the curvature of the bottom wall is lifted.

Description

Packaging particularly for fruit and other sensitive foodstuff The invention relates to a packaging particularly for fruit and other sensitive foodstuff, comprising a bottom, upstanding sidewalls rising from the bottom, said bottom and side-walls together defining an interior of the packaging with a closable open top capable to receive a sealing sheet which is aLLachable Lu a Lop face of Lhe ups Landing sidewalls, and wherein neighbouring sidewalls connect to each other through rounded corners.
Such a packaging has widespread use and is known from US2004/0040973.
Other packagings for foodstuff are disclosed by US 3,077,284; US2001/0001674 and US 5,423,453.
US2004/0040973 discloses a packaging container having a base, four sidewalls extending from the base, and four corners, each extending between a pair of adjacent sidewalls. The side-walls have substantially rectangular protrusions extending from the base to a top edge to strengthen the sidewalls against lateral forces. The sidewalls may also have rounded ribs which protrude into the interior of the packaging container for further reinforcement.
It is an object of the invention to further develop this known packaging and to realize advantages which will become apparent from the following description.
The packaging of the invention has one or more of the following features as are itemized in the appended claims.
In a first aspect of the invention and as seen at a level of a virtual plane through the packaging parallel to the bottom, the sidewalls have an inwardly bended first curvature extending substantially along the length of the sidewalls be-tween the corners and towards the interior of the packaging.
This provides further rigidity to the packaging making it suitable for relatively rough handling as well as promoting its suitability for stacking in a pile together with other packagings of the same design, whilst the content of the packagings remain at all times safeguarded against damage.
In a further aspect of the invention the bottom is also provided with a curvature by which the bottom bends inwardly between the sidewalls towards the interior of the packaging. Prac-tice has shown that this is a very suitable feature for limiting undesirable forces acting on the perishable and sensitive foodstuff, such as grapes, that is during use provided in the interior of the packaging.
The invention is also embodied in a packaging particu-larly for fruit and other sensitive food-stuff, comprising a bottom, upstanding sidewalls rising from the bottom, said bottom and sidewalls together defining an interior of the packaging wiLh a closable open Lop capable Lu receive a sealing sheeL which is attachable to a top face of the upstanding sidewalls, and wherein neighbouring sidewalls connect to each other through rounded corners, and wherein the top face of the upstanding sidewalls is provided with aeration indents so as to arrange that after placement of a sealing sheet on the top face of the upstanding sidewalls to cover the interior of the packaging, aeration openings still remain that provide a gas connection between the interior of the packaging and the exterior of the packaging. This ensures that even with high piles of packagings the foodstuff inside of the packagings can be kept in optimum condition because of the aeration of the packagings that remains possible through the aeration openings.
Another beneficial feature of the invention is that the corners connecting the neighbouring sidewalls extend further downwards than the sidewalls so as to provide that when resting on a supporting surface, the packaging is substantially support-ed at a lower part of the corners and the side-walls are substantially free from the supporting surface. This suitably arranges that when the packaging is loaded the corners are inclined to slightly collapse and to arrange that the curvature of the bottom of the packaging is lifted towards the interior of the packaging. This promotes indeed that adverse forces will be acting on the sensitive foodstuff inside of the packaging, even under severe circumstances and rough handling of the packaging of the invention.
The invention will hereinafter be further elucidated with reference to a drawing of a non-limiting exemplary embodiment of the apparatus and its use in accordance with the invention.
In the drawing: -figure 1 shows a packaging of the invention in a side view from the long side; -figure 2 shows the packaging of figure 1 in a cross-sectional side view from the long side; -figure 3 shows the packaging of figure 1 in a cross-sectional side view from the short side; -figure 4 shows cross-sectional and isometric view at the packaging of the invention; and -figure 5 shows a top view at the packaging of the in-vention.
Whenever in Lhe figures Lhe same reference numerals are applied, these numerals refer to the same parts.
With reference to the appended figures the packaging 1 of the invention is shown which is particularly intended for packaging of fruit and other sensitive foodstuff. The packaging 1 comprises a bottom 2, upstanding sidewalls 3 rising from the bottom 2, wherein said bottom 2 and sidewalls 3 together define an interior 4 of the packaging 1 with a closable open top 5. This is all very clearly shown with reference to the appended figures 1 -5.
At its top the packaging 1 is capable to receive a sealing sheet (not shown) to close off the interior 4 of the packaging 1. The sealing sheet is attachable to a top face 6 of the upstanding sidewalls 3 as is best shown in figure 4 and figure 5. Particularly these figures 4 and 5 also clearly show that neighbouring sidewalls 3 connect to each other through rounded corners 7.
Figure 5 is the best view to the feature of the invention that as seen at the level of any virtual plane through the packaging 1 which is parallel to the bottom 2, the sidewalls 3 have an inwardly bended first curvature 3' extending substan-tially along the length of the sidewalls 3 between the corners 7 and towards the interior 4 of the packaging 1.
Figures 2, 3 and 4 give the best view to the feature of the invention that the bottom 2 is also provided with a curvature 2' by which the bottom 2 bends inwardly between the side-walls 3 and towards the interior 4 of the packaging 1.
Still another feature of the invention which can be independently applied from the above-mentioned features, is visible in figures 1 -5. This feature is that the top face 6 of the upstanding sidewalls 3 is provided with aeration indents 8 so as to arrange that after placement of a sealing sheet to cover the interior 4 of the packaging 1, which is to be connected to the top face 6 of the upstanding sidewalls 3, aeration openings will remain that provide a gas connection between the interior 4 of the packaging 1 and the exterior of the packaging 1.
As is best shown in figures 3 and 4 the corners 7 con-necting the neighbouring sidewalls 3 extend further downwards than the sidewalls 3 so as to provide that when resting on a supporting surface, the packaging will be substantially supported at the lowest part 7' of the corners 7 and the sidewalls 3 are subsLanLiaily free from Lhe supporLiny surface. This enables that when loaded the corners 7 are inclined to slightly collapse and to arrange that the curvature 2' of the bottom 2 of the packaging 1 will be slightly lifted.
Although the invention has been discussed in the foregoing with reference to an exemplary embodiment of the packaging of the invention, the invention is not restricted to this par-ticular embodiment which can be varied in many ways without departing from the invention. The discussed exemplary embodiment shall therefore not be used to construe the appended claims strictly in accordance therewith. On the contrary the embodiment is merely intended to explain the wording of the appended claims without intent to limit the claims to this exemplary embodiment. The scope of protection of the invention shall therefore be construed in accordance with the appended claims only, wherein a possible ambiguity in the wording of the claims shall be re-solved using this exemplary embodiment.
