Pizza box and carton blank for folding a pizza box
The invention relates to a pizza box comprising a tray comprising: a bottom panel having a front edge, two opposite side edges, and a rear edge; four side panels integral with and extending upwardly from each edge of the bottom panel; a lid comprising: a top panel having a front edge, two opposite side edges, and a rear edge, three side panels integral with and extending downwardly from the front edge and each side edge of the top panel, and matching ventilation openings in the tray and the lid, comprising: at least one first matching ventilation opening in the upper half of the side panels extending from the front edges, comprised of an opening located in the upper half of the side panel extending upwardly from the front edge of the bottom panel and an opening located in the upper half of the side panel extending downwardly from the front edge of the top panel. Such a pizza box is shown in United States Patent No. US 5,110,038, with reference to figure 6. This known pizza box further comprises two second ventilation openings in the central area of the side panel extending upwardly from the rear end of the bottom panel. Also embodiments of such pizza boxes are known where the further two ventilation openings are located near the top edge of the side panel extending upwardly from the rear end of the bottom panel.
A problem related to the transportation of pizzas, which are often ordered at carry out, take away, eat in, eat out and/or home delivery restaurants, is the uncontrolled and/or not-optimized exhaust of fumes and discharge of heat from the food product in the pizza box. This influences the crispiness and/or the temperature of the food product once it is served. The invention aims at an improved pizza box in this respect.
According to the invention the pizza box comprises at least one second matching ventilation opening in the lower half of the side panels near the rear edge of the bottom panel, each comprised of an opening located in the lower half of one of the side panels extending upwardly from the bottom panel near the rear edge of the bottom panel and an opening located in the lower half of one of the side panels extending downwardly from the top panel near the rear edge of the top panel. Preferably the pizza box comprises at least two of said second matching ventilation openings in the lower half of the side panels each one near opposite ones of said side edges and near the rear edge of the bottom panel, each comprised of an opening located in the lower half of one of the side panels extending upwardly from the bottom panel near one of the side edges and the rear edge of the bottom panel and an opening located in the lower half one of the side panels extending downwardly from the top panel near one of the side edges and the rear edge of the top panel.
Preferably said second matching ventilation openings are located in the lower half of the side panels extending from the side edges near the rear edge of the bottom panel, each comprised of an opening located in the lower half of the side panel extending upwardly from one of the side edges of the bottom panel near the rear edge of the bottom panel and an opening located in the lower half of the side panel extending downwardly from one of the side edges of the top panel near the rear edge of the top panel.
Thus, in a preferred embodiment the pizza box comprises a tray comprising: a bottom panel having a front edge, two opposite side edges, and a rear edge; four side panels integral with and extending upwardly from each edge of the bottom panel; a lid comprising: a top panel having a front edge, two opposite side edges, and a rear edge, three side panels integral with and extending downwardly from the front edge and each side edge of the top panel, and matching ventilation openings in the tray and the lid, comprising: at least one first matching ventilation opening in the upper half of the side panels extending from the front edges, comprised of an opening located in the upper half of the side panel extending upwardly from the front edge of the bottom panel and an opening located in the upper half of the side panel extending downwardly from the front edge of the top panel, further comprising at least two second matching ventilation openings in the lower half of the side panels extending from the side edges near the rear edge of the bottom panel, each comprised of an opening located in the lower half of the side panel extending upwardly from one of the side edges of the bottom panel near the rear edge of the bottom panel and an opening located in the lower half of the side panel extending downwardly from one of the side edges edge of the top panel near the rear edge of the top panel.
Due to these locations of the ventilation openings, tests have shown that the temperature and/or crispiness of a served pizza, which is kept in the pizza box for a period of time after heating, is increased.
Preferably the rear edge of the top panel is hingeably attached to a top edge of the side panel extending upwardly from the rear edge of the bottom panel. More preferably the rear edge of the top panel is integral with and hingeable with the top edge of the side panel extending upwardly from the rear edge of the bottom panel.
The matching ventilation openings preferably form semicircular or semi-oval ventilation openings in the pizza box.
Preferably the pizza box is formed from a cardboard blank in which said panels are integrally formed by folding. The at least two openings located in the lower half of the side panels extending upwardly from the side edges of the bottom panel near the rear edge of the bottom panel are preferably each formed by a cut in the respective side panel, the outer ends of said cut being located on the folding line between said side panel and the bottom panel, whereby a lip in the form of said cut extends outwardly from said bottom panel when the side panel is folded upwardly. Said cut preferably is a semicircular or semi-oval cut.
The at least two openings located in the lower half of the side panels extending downwardly from the side edges of the top panel near the rear edge of the top panel are preferably each formed by a cut in said blank, wherein said cut extends along the side edges of the side panel extending upwardly from the rear edge of the bottom panel and further from the corner of the top panel to a location on the lower edge of the side panel at a distance from the rear edge of the bottom panel. Preferably each of said cuts form a flap integral with and hingeable with the respective side panels extending upwardly from the bottom panel, said flaps being folded inwardly and resting against the side panel extending upwardly from the rear edge of the bottom panel when the pizza box is formed and closed.
Preferably the side panel extending upwardly from the front edge of the bottom panel comprises two panel sections which are mutually integrally formed and wherein the top section is folded inwardly and downward when the pizza box is formed and closed. The opening in the side panel extending upwardly from the front edge of the bottom panel is preferably formed by a closed circumferential cut, and wherein the folding line between the two panel sections runs across said circumference, such that when said top section is folded inwardly and downwardly the opening is located in the top half of the side panel. Preferably said cut is a circular cut. The side panels extending from the side edges of the bottom panel preferably comprise flaps integral with and hingeable with the respective side panels, said flaps being folded inwardly and extending between the folded panel sections of the side panel extending upwardly from the front edge of the bottom panel.
The opening located in the upper half of the side panel extending downwardly from the front edge of the top panel is preferably formed by a cut in the side panel, the outer ends of said cut being located on the folding line between said side panel and the top panel, whereby a lip in the form of said cut extends outwardly from said top panel when the side panel is folded downwardly. Preferably said cut is a semicircular or semi-oval cut. Preferably said opening is located near the centre of the front edge of the top panel.
The invention also relates to a cardboard blank for folding a pizza box, wherein all of said panels are mutually integrally formed at their mutual adjacent edges and are defined by folding score lines along said edges. Preferably the cardboard is of the corrugated board type, preferably made of kraft paper or plastic, and preferably having a thickness between 1 mm and 3 mm.
