Description

Title: Centrifuge comprising a basket holder, a motor, and a basket which can be filled with a product
Description
The invention relates to a centrifuge comprising a basket holder, a motor, and a basket which can be filled with a product, wherein the basket holder with the basket can be rotated in use by means of the motor to separate liquid from the product in the basket.
Such a centrifuge is known in the market and these known centrifuges are for example used for drying food products such as washed vegetables batch by batch. The centrifuge will in use remove any liquid from the product. A perforated basket with product can be detachably positioned in a basket holder of the centrifuge. After closing a lid of the centrifuge, a motor of the centrifuge will start rotating the holder with the basket to dewater the washed vegetables in the basket. After a predetermined time the centrifuge will stop, the lid can be opened, and the basket with the dewatered product can be removed manually from the holder of the centrifuge for further processing.
In the known centrifuge the basket holder and basket may under certain conditions move relatively to each other during acceleration and deacceleration as a result of inertia of the basket. This undesired movement of the basket relatively to the basket holder may result in an upwardly directed force. As a result of this force, the basket may have a tendency to move upwardly which further reduces the contact area between the basket and the basket holder such that it is possible that the basket moves so far upwards that it touches the lid over the basket.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a centrifuge which is safer in use by preventing or at least reducing the possibility of the undesired movement between the basket and the basket holder in use of the centrifuge.
This object is achieved with the centrifuge of claim 1.
It is an advantage of the centrifuge of the present invention that the basket is connected with the basket holder by means of a form fit and/or a frictional connection, wherein the form fit and/or the frictional connection is provided by centrifugal force. In other words, the form fit and/or the frictional connection is provided automatically in use of the centrifuge by rotating the holder with the basket which produces a force (the centrifugal force) establishing the form fit and/or the frictional connection such that the basket is connected with the basket holder. By means of the automatically locking provided by the form fit and/or the frictional connection between the basket and the basket holder the risk of the undesired movement between the basket and the basket holder is reduced or prevented such that it is no longer possible that the rotating basket moves upwards for example towards a stationary lid closing the inside of the centrifuge. In addition, an operator of the centrifuge does not have to perform additional operations to establish or disconnect a form fit and/or a frictional connection between the basket and the basket holder. The centrifuge with the form fit and/or the frictional connection provided by centrifugal force also requires no or minimal aligning operations between the basket and the basket holder by an operator for providing a locking between the basket holder and the basket. In this way, the safety of the centrifuge is also increased as it is impossible that the operator forgets the locking of the basket with the basket holder or that the operator establishes an incorrect locking.
The centrifuge is preferably an industrial centrifuge used for drying/dewatering food products, such as for example washed vegetables, in particular leafy vegetables or chopped vegetables.
Advantageous aspects of the centrifuge are described in the dependent claims.
The invention will now be explained in more detail on the basis of exemplary embodiments in the appended drawings, in which:
Figures 1a-c show a perspective view of a centrifuge;
Figures 2a-c show a perspective view of a first embodiment of the centrifuge;
Figures 3a-c show a perspective view of a second embodiment of the centrifuge;
Figure 4 shows a perspective view of a third embodiment of the centrifuge.
Like parts are indicated by the same numerals in the figures.
Figures 1a-c show a centrifuge 1 to demonstrate the features of the centrifuge 101,201, 301 of the invention as shown in figures 2a-4.
Fig. 1a shows the centrifuge 1 in an assembled state, wherein a basket 3 is positioned in a basket holder 5. The basket holder 5 is connected with bolts to a rotatable unit 9 driveable by endless belts 11 with a motor 13. The basket holder 5, the rotatable unit 9, the endless belts 11 and the motor 13 are located in a housing (not shown) of the centrifuge 1 which can be opened for positioning a basket 3 in the holder 5 and closed by a lid (not shown). By means of the motor 13 the basket holder 5 can be rotated with an adjustable rotation speed, for example between 250 and 1.500 rpm. Other rotation speeds are also possible. The centrifugation time of the centrifuge 1 can be fixed or set by means of an interface (not shown) activating a timer. In use when the centrifuge turns, the lid is automatically locked such that it cannot be opened.
For sensitive products such as leafy vegetables the centrifuge 1 may slowly start and stop rotation. In addition, the centrifuge 1 may have a turning function to change the rotation direction during the dewatering process so that the product can be better dewatered. The housing of the centrifuge 1 can be mounted on adjustable feet on the ground. These feet may in use function as absorbers for the vibration produced by the centrifuge 1.
The basket 3 can be filled with product to be dewatered. The basket 3 may during loading be located in the basket holder 5, but is also possible to remove the basket 3 manually from the holder 5 such that it is possible to load the basket on any desired position and to use several baskets 5 to be positioned one by one in the centrifuge 1.
The basket 3 comprises a bottom 15, a circumferential wall 17 with perforations 18 and a top edge 19 defining the opening for introducing the product into the basket. The top edge 19 comprises two handles 21 for manual gripping the basket. The circumferential wall 17 of the basket 3 has the shape of a truncated cone.
The basket 3 is made from plastic. The basket 3 may also be used in combination with a mesh insert, filled with the product to be dewatered.
In the embodiments shown, the basket 3 is vertically placed in the basket holder 5 of the centrifuge 1 which is rotated around an axis coincident with the longitudinal axis of the basket 3. It is also possible that the basket 3 is placed under a different angle (acute angle) with respect to the vertical in the basket holder 5. In the assembled state the longitudinal axis or centre axis of the basket 3 coincides with the longitudinal axis or centre axis of the basket holder 5. The receiving space of the basket holder 5 has a shape corresponding to the shape of the basket 3 such that the basket 3 can be manually positioned and clamped in the basket holder 5 without play.
In practice, however, the manual clamping is often not sufficient to prevent movement of the basket 3 with respect to the basket holder 5 during centrifugation. This undesired movement may result in an upwardly directed force. As a result of this force, the basket 3 has a tendency to move upwards and the clamping between the basket 3 and basket holder 5 may hereby be fully lifted which may result in the dangerous situation that the basket 3 moves so far upwards that the high speed rotating basket 3 touches the stationary lid of the housing of the centrifuge 1.
When using a plastic basket 3, it is further possible that the movement of the basket 3 with respect to the holder 5 results in wear of the plastic basket 3. Further, small plastic particles of the plastic basket as a result of the wear of the plastic basket 3 may contaminate the product in the basket 3. The latter is highly undesirable, in particular in the food industry.
Figures 2a-4 show embodiments of the centrifuge 101, 201, 301 according to the present invention. The unit 9, the endless belts 11 and the motor 13 for rotating the centrifuges 101, 201, 301 are not shown in the figures 2a-4. However, the unit 9, the endless belts 11 and the motor 13 shown in figures 1a,b can also be used in the centrifuge 101,201, 301 for rotating the basket holder 105, 205, 305 with the basket 3 for drying the product loaded in the basket. Different configured units for driving (rotating) the basket holder with a motor are also possible, for example it is possible to use a direct drive between the motor and the basket holder without using transmission means like the belts 11. Like the centrifuge 1, the centrifuges 101,201, 301 comprise a housing and a lid (not shown) for loading and unloading a basket 3. in the centrifuges 101, 201, 301 the basket 3 may be identical to the basket 3 of the centrifuge 1. Hence, the basket 3 can be made from plastic, but it is also possible to use a metal basket 3 instead of a plastic basket 3.
The centrifuges 101, 201, 301 solve the above mentioned problems resulting from the movement of the holder 3 with respect to the basket holder 5 in use of the centrifuge 1 in that the basket 3 is connected to the basket holder 105, 205, 305 with a form fit and/or a frictional connection, wherein the form fit and/or the frictional connection is provided by centrifugal force. This form fit and/or the frictional connection between the basket 3 and the basket holder 105, 205, 305 provides an automatic locking and unlocking of the basket 3 with the basket holder 105, 205, 305. The form fit and/or the frictional connection is provided automatically above a predetermined rotation speed of the rotating basket holder 105, 205, 305 and the basket 3 and the form fit and/or the frictional connection is disconnected automatically below a predetermined rotation speed of the rotating basket holder 105, 205, 305 and the basket 3.
In the portion of the centrifuge 101 shown in figures 2a-c the form fit and/or the frictional connection is provided by L-shaped pivotable elements 110 which can be pivoted from a first disconnected position as shown in figures 2a,b to a second connected position as shown in figure 2c and vice versa, wherein the second connected position provides the form fit and/or the frictional connection between the basket holder 105 and the basket 3. Figure 2b is a schematic view, wherein the position of the basket 3 is not shown in its correct position with respect to the basket holder 105, i.e. in the correct position of the basket the pivotable element 110 lies with a free end 127 thereof against the wall 17 of the basket 3 between two adjacent perforations 18 of the basket 3.
Each pivotable element 110 is pivotable/rotatable around a pivot 125 attached to a vertically extending portion 120 of the basket holder 105. The pivotable element 110 has a counter weight 112 to position the center of mass of the pivotable element 110 such that the pivotable element 110 is in the first disconnected position against a first stop 113, when the centrifuge 101 is not in use (no rotation).
In this first disconnected position the pivotable element 110 does not protrude radially inwards with respect to the vertically extending portion 120 of the basket holder 105 such that the basket 3 can freely pass the pivotable element 110 to load or unload the basket in the basket holder 105.
In use of the centrifuge 101, the basket 3 and the basket holder 105 rotate around a substantially vertically extending rotation axis. Under the influence of the centrifugal force, the counter weight 112 of the pivotable element 110 causes a first leg 114 of the L-shaped pivotable element 110 to rotate around pivot 125 away from the basket 3. Simultaneously, a second leg 116 of the L-shaped pivotable element 110 rotates around pivot 125 towards the basket 3. As a result of this rotation the free end 127 of the second leg 116 is received in one of the perforations 18 of the basket 3, as shown in Figure 2c. This automatic connection after starting the centrifuge 101 provides a form fit between the basket 3 and the basket holder 5 which prevents an undesired rotating of the basket 3 with respect to the basket holder 105 and prevents the undesired upwards movement of the basket 3 in use.
In this second position the second leg 116 of the L-shaped pivotable element 110 protrudes towards the center of the basket 3 with respect to the vertical extending portion 120 of the basket holder 105.
It is possible that the free end 127 of the second leg 116 of the L-shaped pivotable element 110 moves against the wall 17 of the basket 3, i.e. to a position where there is no perforation 18 (or hole or opening) in the circumferential wall 17 of the basket 3. By providing multiple pivotable elements 110, for example more than five pivotable elements 110, the risk of missing a perforation 18 of the basket 3 can be reduced or even prevented. The centrifuge 101 comprises eight pivotable elements 110. It has been proven in practise that one single pivotable element 110 of the multiple pivotable elements 110 in one of the perforation holes 18 is sufficient to prevent the previously described undesired movements (slippage and upwarts movement of the basket 3 towards the lid of the housing) between the basket 3 and the basket holder 105 in use of the centrifuge 1.
The upper stop 122 aligned with the upper inner face of the perforation may be provided to stop any further rotation of the L-shaped pivotable element 110. Each pivotable element 110 can be in the form of a hook type element.
In the portion of the centrifuge 201 shown in figures 3a-c the form fit and/or the frictional connection is provided by pivotable elements 210 of the hooktype which can be pivoted from a first disconnected position as shown in figure 3c to a second connected position as shown in figures 3a,b and vice versa. In the second connected position a frictional connection between the basket holder 205 and the basket 3 against slippage between the basket 3 and the basket holder 205 is provided and a form fit is provided against vertical upwards movement of the basket 3 with respect to the basket holder 205. Slippage is rotational movement of the basket 3 with respect to the basket holder in use of the centrifuge. If desired, it is also possible to provide a receiving element(s) for the pivotable elements 210 on or near the edge 19 of the basket 3 to provide a form fit (not shown) preventing slippage between the basket 3 and the basket holder 205.
Each pivotable element 210 is pivotable/rotatable around a pivot 225 attached to a vertically extending portion 220 of the basket holder 205. The pivotable element 210 has a counter weight 212 to position the center of mass of the pivotable element 210 such that the pivotable element 210 is in the first disconnected position for example shown in figure 3c, when the centrifuge 201 is not in use (no rotation). In this first disconnected position the pivotable element 210 the basket 3 can freely pass the pivotable element 210 to load or unload the basket in the basket holder 205.
In use of the centrifuge 201, the basket 3 and the basket holder 205 rotate around a substantially vertical extending rotation axis. Under the influence of the centrifugal force, the counter weight 212 of the pivotable element 210 causes a first leg 214 of the L-shaped pivotable element 210 to rotate around pivot 225 in a clockwise direction. Simultaneously, a second leg 216 of the L-shaped pivotable element 210 rotates around pivot 225 towards the basket 3. As a result of this rotation a free hook-shaped end 227 of the second leg 216 is positioned around at least a portion of the top edge 19 of the basket 3, as shown in figure 3a,3b. In other words, after starting the centrifuge 101 there is an automatic locking between the basket 3 and the basket holder 205.
Preferably, the basket holder 205 comprises more than one pivotable element 210, which are preferably positioned on the basket holder 205 to provide more than one frictional fit and/or form fit. These multiple pivotable elements are preferably positioned on an equidistant with respect to each other. The basket holder 205 shown in figures 3a-c comprises four pivotable elements 210.
It is also possible to provide the pivotable elements 210 on a different location on the basket holder 205 than shown in the figures 3a-c. For example, a bottom edge near the bottom 15 of the basket 3 can (also) be used to provide the form fit and/or the frictional connection between the basket 3 and the basket holder 205. For using the bottom edge additional or different pivotable elements 210 have to be used with respect to the pivotable elements 210 shown in the figures 3a-c.
It is further possible to provide an additional edge(s) (not shown) on the basket 3 cooperating with the pivotable elements 210.
Further, the pivotable elements (not shown) may also be provided on the basket 3, wherein these pivotable elements cooperate with holes (not shown) or edges of the basket holder to establish in use of the centrifuge a frictional fit and/or a form fit provided by centrifugal force.
Figure 4 shows a third embodiment of the centrifuge 301. The basket holder 305 comprises two halves 305a, 305b, which are moveable in a pivotable manner towards each other and away from each other around pivots 325a, 325b. These pivotable halves 305a, 305b are provided with L-shaped arms having a first leg 316a, 316b fixed to a vertically extending portion 320a, 320b of the basket holder 305a and a second leg 314a, 314b comprising a counter weight 312a. 312b. The counter weights 312a, 312b of the arms are located lower than the pivots 325a, 325b. In rest (no rotation), these halves 305a, 305b under the influence of counter weights 312a, 312b move to an open position for receiving a basket 3. When the basket holder 305 starts rotating the two halves 305a, 305b of the basket holder 305 will pivot around pivots 325a, 325b and move towards each other enclosing and clamping the basket 3. As a result of the centrifugal forces, the holder 305 will at least establish a frictional connection between the basket 3 and the basket holder 305. If desired, it is possible to provide one or more projections (not shown) on the inner the basket 3 receiving side of the basket holder 305, which fall into one of the openings 18 in the wall 17 of the basket 3 to provide a form fit.
Alternatively, it is also possible to provide at least one hook (not shown) on the basket holder 305, wherein the hook falls over the edge 19 of the basket 3 to establish a frictional fit and/or a form fit provided by centrifugal force, such that it is not possible that the basket 3 moves relatively to the basket holder 305 in undesired directions.
Instead of two pivotable halves 305a, 305b it is also possible that the basket holder comprises one pivotable halve (not shown) and one stationary halve (not shown), wherein the pivotable halve can be pivoted from a first disconnected position with respect to the stationary halve to a second connected position, wherein the basket 3 can be connected to the basket holder with a form fit and/or a frictional fit.
It is also possible to combine the embodiments shown in the figures 2a-4 in a centrifuge (not shown).
The basket holder and/or the basket may have at least one pivotable element which can be pivoted from a first disconnected position to a second connected position and vice versa, wherein the second connected position provides the form fit and/or the frictional connection between the basket holder and the basket. If the basket holder has more than one pivotable elements providing the form fit and/or the frictional connection, the at least two pivotable elements can be pivoted simultaneously from the first disconnected position to the second connected position and vice versa. In the second position the pivotable elements are in engagement with a circumferential wall 17 of the basket and/or an opening 18 of the wall 17 and/or an upper edge 19 of the basket 3.
The centrifuge is preferably an industrial centrifuge. The term industrial centrifuge is used in this document to distinguish the centrifuge from portable of hand-held consumer devices used for example at home in a kitchen for dewatering salad leaves or the like. An industrial centrifuge has for example a weight of at least 80 kg such that it is not possible to carry these industrial (non-portable) centrifuges in the hands of a single user.
Instead of a counter weight 112, 212, 312a,b it is also possible to distribute the weight in a different manner in the pivotable element to position the center of mass of the pivotable element such that the pivotable element is in the first disconnected position, when the centrifuge is not in use (no rotation) and in the second connected position in use of the centrifuge (rotating basket holder). For example, it is possible to use different (asymmetric) dimensions or using more or different material on one side of the pivotable element than on another side with respect to the pivot.
The embodiments shown in the drawings use pivots 125, 225, 325 with a horizontal rotation axis. It is also possible to use pivots with a rotation axis having an acute angle with respect to a virtual horizontal line or to use pivots with a vertical rotation axis.
