Abstract

A portable windshield wiper device (1) comprising at least one electrically powered wiper (2), pivotally mounted at one end to a base (3), wherein the device (1) is self-powered and the base (3) comprises at least one power generating element (4, 5) for providing electrical power to the wiper (2).

Description

A portable windshield wiper
The invention relates to a portable windshield wiper device specifically for use on a windshield of a two wheeled vehicle, comprising a base and at least one electrically powered wiper, pivotally mounted at one end to the base. US 5,274,876 discloses a windshield wiper device in the form of a portable, temporarily installable and removable windshield wiper unit for clearance of windshields for motorcycles, recreational vehicles and the like not otherwise so equipped. The wiper unit contains a rotary motor driving an oscillating wiper arm through an eccentric pin on a drive wheel to provide the required oscillating action of the wiper arm. The device is battery-powered or powered by the electrical system of the vehicle upon which it is installed. A disadvantage of the prior art windshield wiper device is that it is either dependent on a power source of the vehicle to which it is attached or on a replaceable electricity storage medium such as a battery, which needs to be replaced once it runs out of electricity.
It is an object of the invention to provide a windshield wiper device which is tailored according to the preamble for use on a windshield of a two wheeled vehicle and that is both portable and provides versatility in its use.
It is another object of the invention to provide a windshield wiper device which is able to function independent from an external or replaceable power source.
In a first aspect of the invention the portable windshield wiper device is self-powered and the base comprises at least one power generating element for providing electrical power to the wiper. Providing the portable windshield wiper device with a power generating element is advantageous as it circumvents the need to attach electric wiring from the vehicle to the portable wind-shield wiper device to supply electricity to the device. In addition, it avoids the bother of regularly having to replace temporary electricity storage media such as batteries.
Preferably the at least one power generating element is a fan. A fan will rotate with movement of the vehicle on which it is placed, and will then automatically provide the required electricity for driving the wiper device. The fan will provide an amount of energy that increases with increasing velocity of the vehicle. This is thus well attuned to the required operability of the windshield wiper device in rainy conditions, when the intensity of wiping should increase with increasing velocity of the vehicle, as a windshield of a fast moving vehicle will accumulate more raindrops in comparison with a slower moving vehicle. This configuration would thus provide a tailored amount of energy varying according to vehicle velocity.
Suitably the at least one power generating element comprises a solar cell, preferably in combination with a fixed energy storage device. A solar cell can collect energy which can be stored in the energy storage device when the windshield wiper device is not in use. The collected energy can effectively be used when it is required to operate the windshield wiper device. In another aspect of the invention the wiper is detachably connected to said base. Detaching the wiper from the base of the portable windshield wiper device promotes its portability, as a smaller device will be more easy to carry.
It is further an effective remedy against theft and hooliganism. In time, the windshield wiper will wear out and will need to be replaced. A wiper which is straightforwardly detachable will enable a much more efficient replacement process.
It is further preferred that a docking means for a cell phone is added to the wiper device, capable to receive any cell phone type.
In a preferred embodiment the portable windshield wiper device comprises at least one magnet and at least a part of the base consists of a magnetic material for mounting the base to a windshield. Magnets are a preferred means for attaching the portable windshield wiper device to a windshield as they can be used on every type of windshield and do not damage or require alteration of the windshield.
In another preferred embodiment the base comprises at least one recess for storing the at least on magnet when the device is not attached to a windshield. Storing the magnet(s) in the portable windshield wiper device itself enhances the portability of the device and prevents the magnet(s) from accidentally getting lost.
The invention will hereinafter be further elucidated with reference to the drawing of an exemplary embodiment of a portable windshield wiper device according to the invention that is not limiting as to the appended claims.
In the drawing: - figure 1 shows a portable windshield wiper device with a wiper according to the invention; - figure 2 shows another portable windshield wiper device without a wiper according to the invention; and - figure 3 shows the back of a portable windshield wiper according to the invention.
Whenever in the figures the same reference numerals are applied, these numerals refer to the same or similar parts .
With reference to figure 1, the portable windshield wiper device 1 comprises a base 3 and at least one electrically powered wiper 2, pivotally mounted at one of its ends to the base 3. The portable windshield wiper device 1 is arranged to be self-powered and the base 3 comprises for that purpose at least one power generating element 4, 5 such as a fan or fans 4 for providing electrical power to the wiper 2.
With reference to figure 2, the at least one power generating element 4, 5 of the portable windshield wiper device 1 comprises additionally or alternatively a solar cell 5, which is preferably connected with an electrical storage device (not shown). The way this can be implemented is entirely clear for the skilled person, so that it is not required to show this explicitly in the drawing.
With reference again to figure 1, the base 3 of the portable windshield wiper device 1 preferably comprises at least one, but preferably two magnets 6, and at least a part of the base 3 consists of a magnetic material that cooperates with the magnet or magnets 6 for mounting the base 3 to a windshield.
With reference to figure 3, the base 3 comprises a recess or recesses 7 for storing the magnet or magnets 6 when the device 1 is not attached to a windshield.
Although the invention has been discussed in the foregoing with reference to an exemplary embodiment of the device of the invention, the invention is not restricted to this particular embodiment which can be varied in many ways without departing from the invention. The discussed exemplary embodiment shall therefore not be used to construe the appended claims strictly in accordance therewith. On the contrary the embodiment is merely intended to explain the wording of the appended claims without intent to limit the claims to this exemplary embodiment. The scope of protection of the invention shall therefore be construed in accordance with the appended claims only, wherein a possible ambiguity in the wording of the claims shall be resolved using this exemplary embodiment.
