7 Semitrailer with refrigeration unit ABSTRACT 5 A semitrailer comprises a chassis (300) comprising a first beam (10), a second beam (20) and coupling means (8, 9) to couple the chassis (300) with a tractor unit; said first beam (10) comprising an anterior portion (10b) having a first section (10d), parallel to the second beam (20) and near the coupling means (8, 9), and a second connecting section (10e) that connects said first section (10d) to a central portion (10a) of the first beam (10).

Semitrailer with refrigeration unit
DESCRIPTION The present patent application relates to a semitrailer with refrigeration unit.
The invention belongs to the field of semitrailers, where the term semitrailer is used to indicate such vehicles that present at least one pair of non-driving wheels and that are intended to be coupled with a motorized vehicle, for example a tractor unit, by means of rapid attachment- detachment means.
The description of the prior art is made with reference to figure 1, which shows a plan view of a traditional semitrailer; the semitrailer comprises: - a chassis (100) comprising a pair of identical beams (1, 2) parallel to each other. Each beam (1, 2) consists of a large tubular bar, quadrangular in cross-section, with a top wall, a bottom wall, an internal lateral wall whose face is directed toward the other beam (1, 2) and an external lateral wall (12, 22) facing outward; - at least one pair of non-driving wheels (R); - a transmission axle (3) for each pair of non-driving wheels (2); said transmission axle (3) connecting the non-driving wheels (R) to said pair of beams (1, 2); - coupling means {8, 9) to connect the chassis (100) of the semitrailer to a tractor unit.
Semitrailers of this kind comprise a support surface (not illustrated in the attached figures for illustrative purposes) that is attached above the chassis (100) and that functions as the actual load-bearing surface on which the objects that are to be transported by the semitrailer rest.
Each beam (1, 2) of the chassis (100) comprises: - a central portion (la, 2a) directly near the pair of non-driving wheels (R) connected by the transmission axle (3); - an anterior portion (1b, 2b) comprised between said central portion (la, 2a) and said coupling means (8, 9); - a posterior portion (lc, 2c) that extends from said central portion (la, 2a) towards the side opposite to where said coupling means (8, 9) are located.
It is specified that said chassis (100) comprises an anterior crossbeam (101) that connects the anterior portions (1b, 2b) of the beams at their anterior extremities.
Right onto said anterior crossbeam (101) the coupling means (8, 9) are attached, which consist of a substantially horizontal bar (8) that projects anteriorly, with respect to the forward direction of movement of the semitrailer, from the anterior crossbeam (101).
Regarding the above it is specified that the terms “anterior” and “posterior”, with reference to all the components of the semitrailer, refer in the present description to the forward direction of movement of the semitrailer when coupled with a tractor unit.
Said bar (8) presents: - a posterior extremity (8a) attached to the anterior crossbeam (101) of the chassis (100); - an anterior extremity (8b), to which a hook (9) is attached; - a longitudinal axle (A-A).
Said bar (8) is mounted with its longitudinal axle (A-A) arranged in parallel with and equidistant to the longitudinal axes of the beams (1, 2).
In addition, WO 2010/034723 A describes a semitrailer which has retaining devices for securing a spare wheel, or in particular two individually fastened spare wheels, on the chassis on longitudinal supports. EP 1541454 A1 describes a semitrailer assembly which has longitudinal beams extending between the rear and front section, which are differently spaced at the front than at the back, to make the semitrailer more suitable for tipping.
Figures 2 and 3 illustrate — with a top view and with a schematic front view respectively — a semitrailer that consists of a chassis (200) that supports a refrigeration unit (G) powered by a dedicated engine, usually a diesel engine, that is not included in the figure as it is of the known kind.
Said chassis (200) has the same structural layout as the chassis (100) of figure 1, so that identical elements in the chassis (200) are indicated with the same reference numbers of figure 1, and further numbered description of the elements is hereby omitted.
The difference between the chassis (200) of figure 2 and the chassis (100) of figure 1 is that the pair of beams (1, 2) of the chassis (200) has a reduced centre-to-centre distance in comparison with the centre-to-centre distance between the beams (1, 2) of the chassis (100).
More specifically and with reference to figure 3, the centre-to-centre distance between the two beams (1, 2) of the chassis (200) is smaller because: - said refrigeration unit (G) must be housed underneath the support plane (P) in order not to reduce the load capacity of the semitrailer; - said refrigeration unit (G) must be housed laterally with respect to one of the two beams (1, 2) in order to be easily accessible and to be elevated above the ground (T) at the maximum possible height; - positioning the refrigeration unit {G) on the outside of the two beams (1, 2) of the chassis (100) without reducing the centre-to-centre distance between them would not be possible, as the maximum width of the chassis (200) and the semitrailer would become too great (said width must be less than 2.60 metres).
Said refrigeration unit {G) is therefore positioned alongside the external lateral wall (12) of one of the two beams (1) at the anterior portion (1b), so that its weight rests on the anterior portion of the chassis (200).
The fact that the refrigeration unit (G) is located to the outside of one (1) of said beams (1, 2) causes an imbalance of the chassis (200), resulting in less stability when the trailer is moving.
This imbalance is further exacerbated, with respect to a trailer having a chassis (100) as described above, by the fact that with chassis that contain refrigeration units (G) the centre-to- centre distance between the beams (1, 2) is reduced.
With particular reference to figure 3, this imbalance is also caused by the fact that part of the refrigeration unit (G) protrudes further than the non-driving wheels (R) of the semitrailer.
The aim of the present invention is to overcome the drawbacks of the prior art described above by devising a semitrailer comprising a refrigeration unit (G) and a chassis to support said refrigeration unit (G); said semitrailer having a greater stability, a greater load capacity on said support surface (P), a width that is less than 2.60 metres and the largest possible distance between the refrigeration unit (G) and the ground.
These aims are obtained by the invention in accordance with the characteristics of independent claim 1. Advantageous embodiments of the invention are exemplified in the dependent claims.
The semitrailer according to the invention comprises: - a chassis comprising a first beam, a second beam, an anterior crossbeam; - at least one pair of non-driving wheels; - a transmission axle for each pair of non-driving wheels; said transmission axle connecting the non-driving wheels to said pair of beams; - coupling means, to couple the semitrailer’s chassis to a tractor unit.
Each beam of the chassis comprises: - a central portion directly near the pair of non-driving wheels connected by the transmission axle; - an anterior portion comprised between said central portion and said coupling means; - a posterior portion that extends from said central portion towards the side opposite to where said coupling means (8, 9) are located.
Said semitrailer is characterized by the fact that said first beam of the chassis comprises an anterior portion comprising two consecutive, non-parallel sections, wherein: - a first section is parallel to the second beam and near the coupling means; the centre- to-centre distance between the posterior portions of the beams being greater than the centre-to- centre distance between said first section and the anterior portion of the second beam; - a second connecting section connects said first section to the central portion of the first beam.
The semitrailer further comprises an ancillary device, in particular a refrigeration unit, attached to the chassis at the outside wall of the first section of the first beam.
For the sake of clarity, the description of the semitrailer with refrigeration unit in accordance with the invention will proceed with reference to the attached drawings, merely for illustrative, non-limiting purposes, in which: - Figure 4 is a plan view of the semitrailer with refrigeration unit in accordance with the invention.
With particular reference to figure 4, this figure shows a semitrailer in accordance with the invention, comprising a chassis (300), which comprises a first beam (10) and a second beam (20), comprising: - a central portion (10a, 20a) directly near the pair of non-driving wheels (R) connected by the transmission axle (3); - an anterior portion (10b, 20b) comprised between said central portion (10a, 20a) and said coupling means (8, 9); - a posterior portion (10c, 20c) that extends from said central portion (10a, 20a) towards the side opposite to where said coupling means (8, 9) are located. The peculiarity of said first beam (10) is that it has an anterior portion (10b) comprising two consecutive, non-parallel sections (10d, 10e), more precisely: - a first section (10d) that is parallel to the second beam (20) and that is near the coupling means (8, 9); the centre-to-centre distance between the posterior portions (10c, 20c) of the beams (10, 20) being greater than the centre-to-centre distance between said first section (10d) and the anterior portion {20b) of the second beam (20); - a second connecting section (10e) that connects said first section (10d) to the central portion (10a) of the first beam (10).
With particular reference to figure 4, said second section (10e) is composed of a part that is inclined with respect to the first section (10d) and of a part that is aligned with the central portion (10a) and that connects said inclined part with the central part (10a) of the first beam (10).
Alternatively, said aligned part could be absent and said inclined part could be connected directly onto said central portion (10a).
The chassis (300) comprises supporting brackets (G1) that project laterally from the first section (10d) of the first beam (10).
Because of the reduced centre-to-centre distance of the chassis (300) at said first section (10d) it is possible to fasten, by means of the supporting brackets (G1), the refrigeration unit (G) on the outside of said first section (10d) of the first beam (10), without the refrigeration unit (G) protruding further than the non-driving wheels (R) of the semitrailer.
The bar (8) is mounted with its longitudinal axle (A-A) arranged in parallel with and equidistant to the longitudinal axle of the second beam (20) and the longitudinal axle of the posterior portion (10c) of the first beam (10).
Any other elements that have already been described in the prior art and that remain unchanged in the invention, will not be repeated here.
Even though the description and the attached figures refer specifically to a refrigeration unit (G3), the semitrailer in accordance with the invention can be used with the same advantages also in 5 cases where instead of said refrigeration unit (G), the chassis (300) of the semitrailer is made to support any other ancillary device, without reducing the load-bearing area of the support surface (P).
