Description
Electrical connector
The invention relates to an electrical connector comprising a female part and a male part.
Electrical connectors come in many forms and types. From everyday life wall sockets and light armatures are known as female parts that provide for a connection with male parts embodied as for instance electrical plugs and lightbulbs.
It is an object of the invention to provide for an alternative electrical connector which makes it easy, simple, fast and safe to provide a connection between female parts and male parts of the connector or to disconnect such parts from each other.
It is a further object of the invention to provide such an electrical connector which is fool safe, in that it prevents that the female connector and the male connector are connected to each other incorrectly, particularly but not exclusively when the connector is used in a DC-application.
It is still a further object of the invention to provide such an electrical connector which may be universally applied, and that the connector will be suitable for any type of light emitter, such as conventional light bulbs but also LED's.
Still a further object of the invention is to provide an electrical connector which tolerates the use of dimmable and remote-controlled lights.
Another object of the invention is to provide an electrical connector which is self-guiding without need to resort to complicated instructions for their proper assembly.
Still another object of the invention is to provide such an electrical connector which is suitable for in house and outdoors use.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide an electrical connector that is easily recyclable.
Another object of the invention is to provide an electrical connector which is water and dust repellent.
These and other objects of the invention which will become apparent for the skilled person reading the following disclosure are promoted with an electrical connector according to one or more of the appended claims.
In a first aspect of the invention the female part of the electrical connector is provided with at least one first magnet and the male part is provided with at least one second magnet, wherein the at least one first magnet and the at least one second magnet are arranged to mutually attract each other. This supports the ease and simplicity of applying the electrical connector in a particular application.
In a suitable embodiment of the electrical connector the female part comprises a housing and a base, wherein the base connects to the housing and the base provides for a connection to the fixed world. In this way different types of application of the electrical connector are enabled, particularly by arranging that the base is selected from the group comprising a mounting component or plate for fixture in or on a ceiling, floor or wall, or an adapter to a conventional electrical armature provided in or on a ceiling, floor or a wall. The latter possibility enables that the electrical connector of the invention can be added to an existing situation to improve the ease and simplicity of connecting electrical appliances without demolishing an existing infrastructure.
Suitably the female part has at least two apertures through which electrical contact elements are accessible.
Preferably the female part has two first magnets provided in its housing. The rationale of this will become apparent from the following discussion wherein the construction of the male part is explained.
Beneficially the housing is provided with a circumferential rim equipped to receive a water and dirt repellent material. This makes the electrical connector of the invention suitable for outdoor application.
In another aspect of the invention the male part of the electrical connector is provided with an enclosure, which enclosure houses electrical pin shaped contactors that are equipped to at least in part extend outside of said enclosure to enable electrical contact with external electrical contact elements. The said external electrical contact elements are typically embodied in the female part of the electrical connector .
Some features of the male part are particularly beneficial to the ease of using the electrical connector of the invention. One feature is that the electrical pin shaped contactors of the male part are mounted to respective mounting pieces, wherein each mounting piece is assembled with a third magnet that is arranged to cooperate and attract the second magnet or magnets of the male part. This provides for flexibility during the assembly of the female part and the male part of the electrical connector, by arranging that the second magnet(s) and the third magnet(s) are movable with respect to each other so as to enable movement of the electrical pin shaped contactors within their enclosure.
The versatility of the electrical connector of the invention is exemplified by the fact that the enclosure of the male part can be selected from the group comprising a fitting for a lightbulb and a socket plug. Both types of application are therefore enabled by the electrical connector of the invention .
In another aspect of the invention the male part has two second magnets, wherein said two second magnets are arranged to cooperate with the two first magnets of the female part to provide for a preferential orientation of the male part and the female part with respect to each other in their assembled position. The preferred orientation of the male part and the female part with respect to each other supports the use of the electrical connector of the invention not only for AC applications but also for DC applications, wherein polarity is of the essence.
The preferred orientation of the male part and the female part of the electrical connector of the invention is promoted by arranging that the two second magnets of the male part are mounted in said male part with opposite polarities facing in the mounting direction of the male part to the female part, and that the two first magnets mounted in said female part have opposite polarities facing in the mounting direction of the female part to the male part.
Finally it is remarked that the invention is also embodied in a separate female part and in a separate male part as described as part of the electrical connector of the invention .
The invention will hereinafter be further elucidated with reference to the drawing of exemplary embodiments of parts of an electrical connector according to the invention that is not limiting as to the appended claims.

Making first reference to figure 1, figure 2 and figure 3 a female part of the electrical connector of the invention is shown in different embodiments, which all share the feature that the female part comprises a housing 6 and a base 1, 1.1, 14, wherein said base 1, 1.1, 14 connects to the housing 6 and the base 1, 1.1, 14 provides for arranging a connection to the fixed world.
In figure 1 the base 14 is an adapter to a conventional socket for instance for a lightbulb. In figure 2 the base 1 is a mounting plate for fixture of the female part in or on a ceiling, floor or wall. In figure 3 the base 1.1 is a mounting component for fixture of the female part in a ceiling, floor or wall.
As all figures 1, 2 and 3 show the female part has at least two apertures 6' , 6'' through which in mounted condition electrical contact elements 4, 5 are accessible. These electrical contact elements 4, 5 are connectable to electrical wiring and are intended to cooperate with electrical pin contactors of a male part of the electrical connector as will be explained hereinafter.
In figure 1 and figure 2 an embodiment of the female part is shown wherein the housing 6 is provided with a circumferential rim 7' equipped to receive a water and dirt repellent material, for instance a rubber ring 7.
Further it is shown in said figures 1, 2 and 3 that the female part has two first magnets 2, 3 provided in its housing 6. These first magnets 2, 3 are intended to cooperate with magnets 2', 3' of a male part of the electrical connector (as shown in fig. 4 and 5) to secure their mutual connection. This will become apparent from the following disclosure.
Turning now to figure 4 and 5 embodiments are shown of the male part of the electrical connector. Figure 4 shows an embodiment in which the enclosure 15 is embodied as a fitting for a lightbulb, whereas figure 5 shows an embodiment in which the enclosure 17 is embodied as a socket plug.
Both figure 4 and figure 5 show that the enclosure 15, 17 houses electrical pin shaped contactors 12, 13 that are equipped to at least in part extend outside of said enclosure 15, 17 to enable electrical contact with external electrical contact elements, in particular the elements 4, 5 of the female part as discussed hereinabove with reference to figures 1, 2 and 3.
As mentioned hereinabove the female part is provided with at least one first magnet and preferably two first magnets 2, 3. Correspondingly the male part is provided with at least one second magnet but preferably two second magnets 2', 3' wherein the first magnets 2, 3 of the female part and the second magnets 2', 3' of the male part mutually attract each other when the female part and the male part are placed in the proper position for connecting to each other. Figure 6 provides an exploded view wherein the relative positioning of the respective parts of the electrical connector are clearly visible. Figure 6 relates to the combination of the female part of figure 3 with the male part of figure 5.
It is further preferable that the two second magnets 2', 3' of the male part are arranged to cooperate with the two first magnets 2, 3 of the female part to provide for a preferential orientation of the male part and the female part with respect to each other in their assembled position. Figure 8 shows that for this purpose the two second magnets 2', 3' of the male part are mounted in said male part with opposite polarities +,- facing in the mounting direction (according to arrow B) of the male part to the female part, whereas figure 7 shows that the two first magnets 2, 3 mounted in said female part have opposite polarities -,+ facing in the mounting direction (according to arrow A) of the female part to the male part.
Turning back to figure 4 and figure 5 it is remarked that the electrical pin shaped contactors 12, 13 of the male part are mounted to respective mounting pieces 10, 11, wherein each mounting piece 10, 11 is assembled with a third magnet 8, 9 that is arranged to cooperate and attract the second magnets 2', 3' of the male part. For mounting the electrical pin shaped contactors 12, 13 to the respective mounting pieces 10, 11, the latter mounting pieces 10, 11 are equipped with receptacles 10', 11' that are dimensioned to receive therein a part of the electrical pin shaped contactors 12, 13.
One of the features of the electrical connector of the invention is that the second magnet(s) 2', 3' and the third magnet(s) 8, 9 of the male part are movable with respect to each other so as to enable movement of the electrical pin shaped contactors 12, 13 within their enclosure 15, 17. This is particularly helpful when the male part is assembled together with the female part and the electrical pin shaped contactors 12, 13 extend through the apertures 6', 6'' in the housing 6 of the female part (see figures 1, 2 and 3) to make electrical contact with the electrical contact elements 4, 5 within the housing 6.
