Title: System for attaching a tax label to a tobacco can FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The invention relates to a system for attaching a tax label to a tobacco can. The system comprises a can transporter to transport the tobacco can along a can trajectory, and a label supplier to supply the tax label to a label device. The label device is configured to place a first part of the tax label against a first side of the tobacco can and to subsequently fold the tax label over a rim of the tobacco can in order to place a second part of the tax label against a second side of the tobacco can.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
In the known systems, the label device has in general a first label unit and a second label unit, which are both placed along the can trajectory. The second label unit is downstream from the first label unit. The first label unit places the first part of the tax label against the first side of the tobacco can and the downstream second label unit folds the tax label over the rim of the tobacco can in order to place the second part of the tax label against the second side of the tobacco can.
During the transport of the tobacco can from the first label unit to the second label unit, the orientation of the tobacco can can change. As a result of this, the second label unit will not be able to perform its operation accurately on the label which is with its first part attached to the tobacco can. This problem is in some systems solved by providing a positioning unit between the first label unit and the second label unit, which places the transported tobacco cans in a specific orientation. This makes the system more complex and more expensive.
The invention is based on the insight that there is a need for a more effective and accurate way of attaching the tax label to tobacco can.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The invention has the objective to provide an improved or at least alternative method of attaching a tax label to a tobacco can. This objective is achieved by a system for attaching a tax label to a tobacco can, comprising a can transporter to transport the tobacco can along a can trajectory, and a label supplier to supply the tax label to a label device, wherein the label device comprises a label holder to hold the tax label which is received from the label supplier and a holder driver to drive the label holder along a holder trajectory, the holder trajectory has an operation part extending along the can trajectory, and the label device is configured to in the operation part of the holder trajectory place a first part of the tax label held by the label holder against a first side of the tobacco can and to subsequently fold the tax label over a rim of the tobacco can in order to place a second part of the tax label against a second side of the tobacco can while the first part of the tax label is still held against the first side of the tobacco can by the label holder.
Holding the first part of the tax label against the first side of the tobacco can ensures that the orientation of the tobacco can with respect to the label holder does not change. This allows the label holder to fold the second part of the label over the rim and place it against the second side of the tobacco can in an effective and accurate manner.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The figure 1,2A and 2B show a view in perspective of an embodiment of the system 1 according to the invention. The system 1 is configured to attach a tax label 2 to a tobacco can 3. The tax label 2 can be made from paper, plastics or any other suitable material. The tobacco can 3 be made of any material, such as paper, plastic, or metal. Combinations of materials are also possible. An example of a tobacco can 3 is shown in figure 9. The tobacco can 3 has a first side 14 and a second side 15, and a rim 16 located between the first and second side 14, 15.
The system 1 comprises a can transporter 4 to transport the tobacco can 3 along a can trajectory 5, and a label supplier 6 to supply the tax label 2 to a label device 7. The label device 7 comprises a label holder 8 to hold the tax label 2 received from the label supplier 6 and a holder driver 9 to drive the label holder 8 along a holder trajectory 10. The holder trajectory 10 has an operation part 11 extending along the can trajectory 5. The can trajectory 5, the holder trajectory 10, and the operation part 11 are amongst others shown in the figures 3A and B.
The label device 7 is configured to in the operation part 11 of the holder trajectory 10 place a first part 12 of the tax label 2 held by the label holder 8 against the first side 14 of the tobacco can 3 and to subsequently fold the tax label 2 over the rim 16 of the tobacco can 3 in order to place a second part 13 of the tax label 2 against the second side 15 of the tobacco can 3 while the first part 12 of the tax label 2 is still held against the first side 14 of the tobacco can 3 by the label holder 8.
Holding the first part 12 of the tax label 2 against the first side 14 of the tobacco can ensures that the orientation of the tobacco can with respect to the label holder 8 does not change. This allows the label holder 8 to fold the second part 13 of the label over the rim 16 and place it against the second side 15 of the tobacco can 3 in an effective and accurate manner.
The folding and placing of the second part 13 of the tax label 2 against the second side 15 of the tobacco can 3 is also performed by the label holder 8. In other example of the system, the folding and placing of the second part 13 of the tax label 2 against the second side 15 of the tobacco can 3 is performed by a separate unit while the label holder holds the first part 12 against the first side 14.
The system 1 also comprises an adhesive device 31 placed along the holder trajectory 10 downstream of the label supplier 6 and upstream of the operation part 11 of the holder trajectory 10 (see fig. 7). The adhesive device 31 is configured to provide an adhesive on the first part 12 and the second part 13 of the tax label 2 held by the label holder 8.
The figures 3A-E show a top view of the system 1 of fig. 2. The can trajectory 5 along which the tobacco cans 3 are transported extends along a straight line. The holder trajectory 10 along which the label holders 8 are transported is an endless trajectory. The operation part 11 of the holder trajectory 10 extends parallel to the can trajectory 5. This means that the operation part 11 of the holder trajectory 10 also extends along a straight line.
When the label holder 8 is moved through the operation part 11 of the holder trajectory 10, it interacts with the tobacco can 3 being moved along the part of the can trajectory 5 extending parallel to the operation part 11. During movement of the label holder 8 through the operation part 11 of the holder trajectory 10, the label holder 8 and the associate tobacco can 3 move at the same speed. As a result of this, the tax label 2 carried by the label holder 8 is moved at the same speed as the tobacco can 3 when it is attached thereto.
The can transporter 4 comprises a first transport surface 32 and a second transport surface 33, which move with a first transport speed and second transport speed, respectively, in a can direction 36 of the can trajectory 5. The second transport surface 33 extends transverse, more specifically perpendicular, to the first transport surface 32. In other examples of the system 1, the second transport surface 33 extends at a different angle than perpendicular to the first transport surface 32.
The second transport surface 33 comprises multiple transport members 37 extending transverse, more specifically perpendicular, from the second transport surface 33 and above the first transport surface 32. In other examples of the system 1, the multiple transport members 37 extend at a different angle than perpendicular from the second transport surface 33. The transport members 37 are located at a can distance from each other in the can direction 36. The second transport speed is higher than the first transport speed to push the transported tobacco cans 3 over the first transport surface 32 with the transport members 37. This ensures that the tobacco cans 3 are always in contact with the transport members 37.
The second transport surface 33 is positioned to fixate the transported tobacco can 3 in a first holder direction 17. The first holder direction 17 extends transverse, more specifically perpendicular, to the first side 14 of the tobacco can 3. In other examples of the system 1, the first holder direction 17 extends at a different angle than perpendicular to the first side 14 of the tobacco can 3.
The first transport surface 32 is positioned to fixate the transported tobacco can 3 in the second holder direction 18. The second holder direction 18 extends traverse, more specifically perpendicular, to the first holder direction 17. In other examples of the system 1, the second holder direction 18 extends at a different angle than perpendicular to the first holder direction 17.
The can transporter 4 comprises a spacing unit 39 positioned along the first transport surface 32 and configured to position tobacco cans 3 at a distance from each other on the first transport surface 32. The second transport surface 33 is configured to place one of the transport members 37 in a space 41 formed between two subsequent tobacco cans 3.
The label device 7 comprises multiple label holders 8 and the holder driver 9 is configured to drive the label holders 8 along a holder trajectory 10 at a holder distance 50 from each other. The holder distance 50 is equal to the can distance 40.
The first transport surface 32 is formed by a driven first endless belt 42 and the second transport surface 33 is formed by a driven second endless belt 43.
The functioning of the can transporter 4 will be explained with reference to the figures 3C-E. In figure 3C, the spacing unit 39 has just rotated to release one of the tobacco cans 3 (indicated with *). The spacing unit 39 blocks a line of further tobacco cans 3. The released tobacco can 3 moves along with the first transport surface 32 at the first transport speed. In figure 3D, one of the transport members 37 is placed between the released tobacco can 3 and the first further tobacco can 3 which is blocked by the spacing unit 39. Since the transport member moves at the higher second transport speed, it has come in contact with the released tobacco can 3 and it moves said tobacco can 3 over the first transport surface 32. A new tobacco can 3 is in figure 3E released by the spacing unit 39 and the cycle is repeated. This way, the tobacco cans 3 are moved over the first transport surface 32 by the transport members 37. The tobacco cans 3 move at the second transport speed at the can distance 40 from each other along the operation part 11 of the holder trajectory 10. The label holders 8 move simultaneously with the tobacco cans 3 through the operation part 11 of the holder trajectory 10 to attach the tax label 2 to the tobacco cans 3.
Figure 4 shows an enlarged view in perspective of the label supplier 6 which is filled with tax labels 2. A label picker 51 is provided to pick a tax label 2 from the label supplier 6 and transfer it to the label holder 8 (see also fig. 6A-C).
The figures 5A-F show an enlarged view in perspective of the label holder 8. The label holder 8 comprises a base surface 27 and holding members 28 which are movable from a first member position 29 (fig. 5A) into a second member position 30 (fig. 5 B). The holding members 28 in the first member position 29 are positioned adjacent to the base surface 27 in order to hold the second part 13 of the received tax label 2 between the holding members 28 and the base surface 27. The holding members 28 in the second member position 30 are moved away from the base surface 27 when compared with the first member position 29 in order to free the second part 13 of the tax label 2.
The holder device is configured to move the holding members 28 from the first member position 29 into the second member position 30 after the first part 12 of the tax label 2 is placed against the first side 14 of the tobacco can 3 by the label holder 8.
The figures 6A-C show a top view of the label supplier 6, the label picker 51, and the label holder 8. In figure 6A, the label picker 51 has picked a tax label 2 from the label supplier 6. The label picker 51 subsequently moves along with an empty label holder 8 and rotates to transfer the tax label 2 to the label holder 8 (see fig. 6B and 6C).
After that, the label holder 8 moves along the adhesive device 31 to receive an adhesive on the first part 12 and the second part 13 of the tax label 2 (see fig. 7). The adhesive device 31 has a first discharge unit 52 configured to discharge an adhesive on the first part 12 of the tax label 2 and a second discharge unit 53 configured to discharge an adhesive on the second part 13 of the tax label 2.
The figures 8A-G show the attaching of the tax label 2 to the tobacco can 3 with the system 1 of fig. 2.
The label device 7 is configured to in the operation part 11 of the holder trajectory 10 move the label holder 8 in the first holder direction 17 transverse, more specifically perpendicular, to the first side 14 of the tobacco can 3 and to the can trajectory 5 into a first position 22 in order to place the first part 12 of the tax label 2 against the first side 14 of the tobacco can 3. In other examples of the system 1, the label device 7 is configured to in the operation part 11 of the holder trajectory 10 move the label holder 8 in the first holder direction 17 transverse, more specifically perpendicular, to the first side 14 of the tobacco can 3 and in the direction of the can trajectory 5 into a first position 22 in order to place the first part 12 of the tax label 2 against the first side 14 of the tobacco can 3.
The label holder 8 comprises a first holder part 19 and a second holder part 20. The label device 7 is configured to in the operation part 11 of the holder trajectory 10 move the first holder part 19 and the second holder part 20 in the first holder direction 17 into the first position 22 in order to place the first part 12 of the tax label 2 against the first side 14 of the tobacco can 3 and to subsequently move the second holder part 20 further in the first holder direction 17 into a second position 23 in order to fold the tax label 2 over the rim 16 and to place the second part 13 of the tax label 2 against the second side 15 of the tobacco can 3, while the first holder part 19 remains in the first position 22.
The second holder part 20 comprises a pusher 24 configured to apply a force on the second part 13 of the tax label 2, which pusher 24 moves over the second part 13 of the tax label 2 when the second holder part 20 is moved into the second position 23. The pusher 24 pushes on the second part 13 of the tax label 2 in a second holder direction 18 traverse, more specifically perpendicular, to the first holder direction 17. The pusher 24 is movable in the second holder direction 18. The pusher 24 comprises a roller, such as a wheel 26, configured to roll over the second part 13 of the tax label 2. The second holder part 20 is configured to start the movement of the pusher 24 over the second part 13 of the tax label 2 at the rim 16.
Since there are in general openings 54 on the surface of the second side 15 of the tobacco can 3, the pusher 24 ensures that the second part 13 of the tax label 2 is pushed somewhat into the opening 54 during the attaching of the second part 13 of the tax label 2. As a result of this, there will be no tension in the second part 13 of the tax label 2 after attachment. The second part 13 of the tax label 2 may even be pushed in the opening 54 to create play. This is beneficial when the tobacco cans 3 are stacked upon each other. If there would be tension in the second part 13 of the tax label 2, the stacked tobacco cans 3 would tilt and create a “banana shape” of stacked tobacco cans 3.
As shown in the figure 8A-G, the label device 7 comprises a first cam profile 44, a second cam profile 45 and a third cam profile 46. The first cam profile 44, the second cam profile 45 and the third cam profile 46 extend along the operation part 11 of the holder trajectory 10. The label holder 8 comprises a first cam member 47, a second cam member 48 and a third cam member 49 being in contact with the first cam profile 44, the second cam profile 45 and the third cam profile 46, respectively. The first cam profile 44 is configured to move the first holder part 19 of the label holder 8 in the first holder direction 17 and into the first position 22. The second cam profile 45 is configured to move the second holder part 20 of the label holder 8 in the first holder direction 17 and into the second position 23. The third cam profile 46 is configured to move the holding members 28 away from the base surface 27 and into the second member position 30.
In figure 8A, the label holder 8 is carrying a label provided with adhesive at its first and second part 13 is placed besides the tobacco can 3. The label holder 8 is located at the start of the operation part 11 of the holder trajectory 10. The first holder part 19 and the second holding part are located in the starting position 21. The holding members 28 are located in the first holding position. The label holder 8 is positioned as shown in figure 5A.
In figure 8B, the first holder part 19 and the second holder part 20 are placed in the first position 22, such that the first part 12 of the tax label 2 is placed against the first side 14 of the tobacco can 3. The label holder 8 is positioned as shown in figure 5C.
In figure 8C, the holding members 28 are moved into the second holding position.
The label holder 8 is positioned as shown in figure 5D.
In figure 8D, the second holder part 20 is moved towards the second position 23 to fold the label over the rim 16 and the pusher 24 is moved over the second part 13 of the label. The label holder 8 is positioned as shown in figure 5E.
In figure 8E, the second holder part 20 is located in the second position 23 and the second part 13 of the label is placed against the second side 15 of the tobacco can 3. The label holder 8 is positioned as shown in figure 5F. The first holder part 19 remained in the first position 22 during the steps shown in the figures 8C-E.
In figure 8F, the second holder part 20 is moved back into the first position 22.
In figure 8G, the first holder part 19 and the second holder part 20 are moved back into the starting position 21. The end of the operation part 11 of the holder trajectory 10 is reached.
Figure 9 shows a view in perspective of the tobacco can 3 with tax label 2. The second part 13 of the tax label 2 extends into the opening 54 of the second side 15 of the tobacco can 3. Due to this, there is not tension in the second part 13 of the tax label 2 and there is play in the second part 13 of the tax label 2. This ensures that no “banana-shape” will be formed when the tobacco cans 3 are stacked.
