Description
Tramline security device
Field of the invention
The invention relates to a tramline security device for securing a rail segment.
Background of the invention
The known tramline security device in current use today is placed along the tramline track to secure a rail segment e.g. with a workplace where work on or in proximity of the secured rail segment is done. The known device contains a box with a rotating arm on top of the box. When this rotating arm is placed above the rails of the tramline, the arm prevents oncoming trams and other traffic from entering the secured rail segment.
Summary of the invention
The known tramline security device is positioned next to the rails of a tramline. Quite often the available space for placing such a device next to the rails of a tramline is limited or absent.
Another drawback of the known tramline security device is that it needs to be firmly secured to the ground. Easy and rapid removal of such a known device for placing the known device at another location takes considerable time and effort.
Yet another drawback is that the arm of the known device extends over only part of the width of the tramline. Therefore the arm does not provide a complete closure of the tramline. Oncoming traffic, in particular cyclists or motorcyclists, may enter the workplace since the arm only partly extends over the rails of the tramline.
The present invention aims to provide an alternative and/or improvement of the prior art tramline security device. A further object is to overcome at least in part one or more of the above stated disadvantages of the tramline security device according to the prior art.
The tramline security device according to the invention has the features of one or more of the appended claims.
In a first aspect of the invention a tramline security device comprises a stationary part and an indicative part that is movable relative to the stationary part, wherein said stationary part is arranged to fit between neighbouring rails of a rail segment of a tramline. This provides the advantage that the stationary part is placeable between the rails of the rail segment and does not use the limited or unavailable space next to the rails of the tramline.
Advantageously the tramline security device is arranged to be in at least two positions: an extended and a retracted position. In the extended position, when the stationary part is placed between the rails, the indicative part is in an upright position. In the upright position the indicative part is above the rails and in sight of oncoming traffic and arranged to block this traffic from entering the secured rail segment. Traffic comprises a tram, but also a car, a lorry, a bike and a pedestrian, such as a kid.
In the retracted and downturned position, the indicative part is out of sight of oncoming traffic. In the retracted position the traffic is not blocked from entering the secured rail segment so that a tram can enter the rail segment.
Preferably the device is self-powered. Self-powered in the context of this application means that the device does not need external power or fueling, have batteries exchanged and/or be plugged in a power grid. The device operates over a considerable amount of time independent of external power sources. This time may extend to several weeks.
In a desirable arrangement the tramline security device comprises a solar panel to supply the device with electrical energy. The device then preferably also comprises a battery, capacitor and/or other storage means to store the collected energy from the solar panel to use this energy at a moment in time the solar panel does not provide enough energy to operate the device, e.g. at night.
An advantageous aspect of the invention is that the tramline security device is displaceable. The device can be connectable to the ground with e.g. screws. These connections are easily placed and removed with regular tools like a wrench, spanner and/or screwdriver. Alternatively the device can be placed on the ground without additional connections.
The indicative part suitably spans a width of the rail segment when positioned above the rail segment. By spanning substantially the width of the rails of a rail segment the indicative part positioned above the rail segment provides the best guarantee to prevent oncoming traffic from entering the secured rail segment.
Desirably the stationary part comprises an elongated box of a predetermined height. A limited vertical space is available between the rail segment and a tram passing over the rail segment. The elongated box provides the advantage that its dimensions, in particular its height dimensions, can be attuned to the room between the rails without the need to create additional space for placing the device in a recess.
It is possible to provide the driver means and power supply outside the box. Preferably however the device driver means and power supply are placed in the box. This gives the advantage of providing a shield against the effects of weather, dust, puncturing and/or vandalism.
Preferably the indicative part is rotatable around a rotational axis, which is parallel to a flat bottom side of a box. The flat bottom side of the box is considered to be the bottom side of the box when the box is placed between rails.
In one embodiment the indicative part comprises two arms. Connecting two ends of the indicative part to the stationary part provides additional stability and strength to the elongated part.
It is also possible that the elongated part of the indicative part comprises a marking, like a stripe, to indicate the closure of the rail segment. The marking might be fluorescent. The elongated part might also comprise a sign, like a road sign, to indicate the closure of the rail segment.
In yet another embodiment the device comprises remote control means. Apart from being able to control the tramline security device from within the tram, this also provides the option of controlling the device from a distant control room, wherein preferably multiple tramline security devices in a region are controlled.
In one embodiment the indicative part comprises an extension extending the indicative part when it is positioned above the rail segment. This can complete the closure of the rail segment by arranging that the extension spans more than the width of the rails.
Preferably the device comprises a flat bottom side placeable flat on the ground. This bottom side provides the advantage of a stable positioning of the device on the ground when the box is designed with a relatively low height compared to the width and length of the device.
In yet another aspect the tramline security comprises a signal unit for signalling a change or status of the tramline security device.
The signal unit may like the earlier mentioned remote control means be used in close proximity of the device or at greater distance, e.g. in a control room.
The signal unit and/or the remote control means may be used by personnel working in the vicinity of the rail segment as a warning system. Another possible use is to integrate the controller and/or the signal unit with a traffic crossing control unit for controlling the traffic on a nearby crossing.
Brief description of the drawings
The invention will hereinafter be further explained with reference to the drawing of several figures which are exemplary and explanatory of nature and are not limiting the scope of the invention. To the person skilled in the art it will be clear that many variants are conceivable covered by the scope of protection defined by the appended claims.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a known tramline se curity device.
Figure 2 shows a perspective view of a tramline security device according to the invention.
Figures 3A-B show side views of the tramline security device.
Detailed description of preferred embodiments
Figure 1 shows a known tramline security device 100. The known device 100 comprises a box 101 and a signal part 102. The box is placed along a rail segment 5 with rails 2, 2' to secure a workplace 4. Due to the height and relative small footprint of the box the box needs to be firmly secured to the ground.
The signal part 102 rotates with one end around a rotational axis R2. The signal part 102 is shown in a position in the figure signalling not to enter the rail segment with workplace 4. The signal part extends a distance A parallel to the width W of the rail segment. The distance A is measured between a vertical line V and an opposite end of the rotating end of the signal arm. The vertical line V intersects with the signal arm and a rail closest to the box and is vertical to the ground. It is noted that A is considerably smaller than W.
Figure 2 shows a tramline security device 1 according to the invention. The device comprises a stationary part 10 and a movable indicative part 20. Figure 2 shows the indicative part raised upward to indicate that a tram 3 should not enter the rail segment 5 with workplace 4.
The stationary part 10 comprises an elongated box 11 and solar panels 13. The elongated box comprises a flat bottom side 12 for easy and stable placement of the device on the ground. The elongated box comprises further a flat top side for placement of the solar panels.
With reference in particular to figure 2 it is shown that the indicative part 20 comprises an elongated part 22 and two arms 21, 21'. The elongated part 22 comprises markings indicating not to pass this device. An end of each arm 21, 21' is connected to an end of the elongated part 22. An opposite end of each arm is rotationally connected with a drive housed in the stationary part 10, so as to arrange that the indicative part 20 rotates around rotational axis R1.
The elongated box prevents when the indicative part is in its upright position that a tram 3 passes (see the striped lines in figure 3A/3B), yet allows when the indicative part is moved to its retracted or downturned position, a tram 3 to pass (corresponding with the full lines in figure 3A/3B). The movement of the indicative part between the retracted downturned position and the upright position is symbolized with a double arrow S in figures 3A and 3B.
Figure 3A shows that the elongated part 22 lays on top of the stationary part 10 in the retracted position. Figure 3B shows an embodiment in which the elongated part 22 is arranged next to the stationary part 10 in the retracted or downturned position.
Furthermore the device of the invention has solar panels 13 placed on a top side in figure 3A and recessed in a top side in figure 3B.
