Said tape comprises a thermoplastic material and is melted on the coupling's or fitting's external surface with laser heating. Preferably said coupling or fitting also comprises a thermoplastic material. The fibers are selected from the group comprising glass fibers, carbon fibers, aramide fibers.
Description
Coupling or fitting for a pipe
The invention relates to a coupling or fitting for a pipe.
Particularly when the coupling or fitting is made of a plastic material, said coupling or fitting has limited reliability when subjected to continued stress. As a result such plastic couplings or fittings regularly fail and are not acceptable or suitable for applications requiring long stand times, such as several decades up to 50 years or more.
In the prior art this problem has been recognized and efforts to resolve it concentrate on applying increased wall thicknesses, or complicated constructions of the walls of the coupling or fitting. Notable examples are EP 1 579 141; US 4,023,835; and US 2011/01686.
Is an object of the invention to increase the reliability and stand time of existing couplings or fittings at low costs .
The coupling or fitting of the invention has the features of one or more of the appended claims.
In a first aspect of the invention the coupling or fitting is provided with an externally wound fiber reinforced tape. This surprisingly simple measure has a tremendous effect on the reliability and security of the coupling or fitting.
The fibers can be of any suitable material, but preferably the fibers are selected from the group comprising glass fibers, carbon fibers, aramide fibers. Particularly glass fibers provide good results.
Its ease of applying the tape externally on the surface of the coupling or fitting is promoted by arranging that the tape substantially comprises a thermoplastic material. It further provides the notable advantage that the tape can be melted on the coupling's or fitting's external surface, preferably with laser heating. Practice has proven that this is an effective and swift way of applying the reinforced tape externally on the coupling or fitting, with little impact on the manufacturing costs. It is shown that the results are particularly satisfying when also said coupling or fitting comprises a thermoplastic material. Particularly desirable is that the fibers are predominantly oriented in the tape's longitudinal direction, which is circumferentially around the coupling's or fitting's external surface.
The invention will hereinafter be further elucidated with reference to the drawing of an exemplary embodiment of an apparatus according to the invention that is not limiting as to the appended claims.
In the drawing: -figure 1 shows schematically a first embodiment of a coupling or fitting according to the invention; -figures 2A and 2B show a second embodiment of the coupling or fitting according to the invention with different seals; and -figure 3A and 3B show a third embodiment of the coupling or fitting according to the invention with different seals .
Whenever in the figures the same reference numerals are applied, these numerals refer to the same parts.
In all figures 1, 2A/B and 3A/3B a coupling 1 is shown as applied for coupling to a pipe 2.
In figure 1 the coupling 1 comprises the parts 1A and IB that are connected with each other by a bolt 3 and nut 4 connection. By tightening the bolt 3 and nut 4 connection, the slanting inner surfaces of the parts 1A and IB acting on the pressure organ 5 cause that said pressure organ 5 is pressed against the pipe 2. A seal 6 that is provided between the pressure organ 5 and the pipe part 1A as well as between the pressure organ 5 and the pipe 2 prevents leakage when the coupling 1 is applied to the pipe 2.
In figure 2A and figure 2B the coupling 1 comprises a circumferentially outer part 1C and a circumferentially inner part ID. The coupling 1 also comprises a pressure organ 5 between slanting surfaces of the outer part 1C and inner part ID. By means of bellows 6 that can be pressurized from outside the coupling 1, the inner part ID is pressed towards the slanting inner surface of the outer part 1C with the pressure organ 5 in between. This action causes that the pressure organ 5 presses against the pipe 2. In figure 2A a seal 6 is applied which runs from a position between the pressure organ 5 and the pipe 2 to a position where the seal 6 is connected to the inner part ID. In figure 2B the seal 6 runs from a position between the pressure organ 5 and the pipe 2 to a position where the seal 6 is positioned between the pressure organ 5 and the slanting inner surface of the outer part 1C. Both embodiments provide an effective seal against leakage when the coupling 1 is mounted on the pipe 2.
In figure 3A and figure 3B the coupling 1 comprises a circumferentially outer part IE cooperating with a circumferentially inner part IF. The outer part IE and the inner part IF are provided with cooperating screw threads and with slanting inner surfaces acting on a pressure organ 5, to arrange that said slanting surfaces of said outer part IE and inner part IF cause that the pressure organ 5 is pressed towards and against pipe 2 when the inner part IF and outer part IE are screwed into each other. In both embodiments of figure 3A and figure 3B a seal 6 is provided. In the embodiment of figure 3A the seal 6 runs from a position between the pressure organ 5 and the pipe 2 until a position between the pressure organ 5 and the inner part IF of the coupling 1. In the embodiment of figure 3B the seal 6 runs from a position between the pressure organ 5 and the pipe 2 until a position where the seal 6 is connected to the inner part IF of the coupling 1. Again the seal 6 effectively prevents leakage of the coupling 1 as applied to the pipe 2.
All the variant embodiments of the coupling 1 as shown in figures 1, 2A/2B and 3A/3B are at predefined positions provided with an externally wound fiber reinforced tape 7. Preferably the tape 7 comprises a thermoplastic material and is melted on the coupling's or fitting's external surface 8. This can be effectively done with laser heating, particularly in the embodiment wherein said coupling 1 or fitting comprises a thermoplastic material.
The fibers of the fiber reinforced tape 7 that are schematically indicated with reference 9 are selected from the group comprising glass fibers, carbon fibers, aramide fibers. The figures clearly show that preferably the fibers 9 are predominantly oriented in the longitudinal direction of the tape 7, which is circumferentially around the external surface 8 of the coupling 1 or fitting.
Although the invention has been discussed in the foregoing with reference to an exemplary embodiment of the apparatus of the invention, the invention is not restricted to this particular embodiment which can be varied in many ways without departing from the gist of the invention. The discussed exemplary embodiment shall therefore not be used to construe the appended claims strictly in accordance therewith. On the contrary the embodiment is merely intended to explain the wording of the appended claims without intent to limit the claims to this exemplary embodiment. The scope of protection of the invention shall therefore be construed in accordance with the appended claims only, wherein a possible ambiguity in the wording of the claims shall be resolved using this exemplary embodiment.
