Description
Method for the preservation of flange connections and their protection against corrosion
The invention relates to a method for the preservation of flange connections and their protection against corrosion, wherein the flanges are connected with each other by bolts and nuts, and wherein the flanges define a gap area in between the flanges through which the bolts are provided. EP-B-1 146 274 teaches such a method in which the flange end surface directed towards the bolt head and/or the nut of the bolt, or such surface of possibly applied washers, is provided with at least one groove serving to vent or drain the flange bore.
From US-A-5,955,020 a method for the preservation of flange connections and their protection against corrosion is known, comprising the step of sealing of the gap area with sealing means, such as a tape, and the step of inserting a protective filler material in said gap area through said sealing means to seal off the gap area, followed by the step of removing the sealing means to provide the flange connection in its ready protected state.
Practice learns that the known methods of preservation of flange connections and their protection against corrosion require improvement. It is therefore an object of the invention to provide an effective alternative for the known methods of preservation of flange connections and their protection against corrosion.
The method of the invention is therefore provided with the features of one or more of the appended claims.
According to a first aspect of the invention the protective filler material is inserted in the gap area by providing a supply channel for the protective filler material through the sealing means and vacuuming the gap area. By vacuuming the gap area an effective method is provided for ensuring that no encapsulated air remains between the flanges which might possibly support corrosion of the flanges or their bolt connections. The vacuuming also promotes drying of the gap area and driving out of any moist.
Preferably vacuuming the gap area is executed by con- necting a vacuum pump with the gap area opposite to the supply channel for the protective filler material and operating said vacuum pump until the protective filler material begins to leave the gap area through the connection of the vacuum pump.
By providing the vacuum pump directly opposite to the supply channel for the protective filler material air inclusions are effectively avoided in any location within the gap area.
The effectiveness of the method of the invention is promoted by arranging that prior to operating the vacuum pump, a sealing bag is provided to cover the flanges with the connections for the vacuum pump and the supply channel for the protective filler material.
One of the favorable aspects that promotes the purpose of the invention is that the supply channel for the protective filler material is provided at the gap area's underside,· and the vacuum pump is connected at the upper side of the gap area between the flanges. This helps to drive out air from the gap area by the introduction of the filler material.
It is preferred that the protective filler material is a polyurethane. Polyurethane as beneficial properties in that it is not particularly flammable. Moreover it is environmentally friendly and it has poor electrical conductivity.
Although other materials or combinations of materials may be used, preferably the protective filler material is a polyurethane combined with a harder, which are combined preferably in a ratio 5:1. Depending on the circumstances other ratios may be applied or additional materials may be used. After insertion of the protective filler material in the gap area of the flanges, said filler material is set for at least 20 hours.
The invention will hereinafter be further elucidated with reference to a nonlimiting but prefereed embodiment concerning the method of preserving a flange package according to the invention, as elucidated with reference to the drawing of the attached figures 1, 2 and 3.
In the drawing: 1 -Figure 1 shows the step of sealing of the gap area between two flanges with a sealing tape; -Figure 2 shows that a sealing bag is provided to cover the flanges with the connections for a vacuum pump and a supply channel for protective filler material which is to be supplied within the gap area between the flanges; -Figure 3 provides a side view of the flanges wherein the gap area is sealed off by the supplied protective filler material.
Whenever in the figures the same reference numerals are applied, these numerals refer to the same parts.
The method of the invention starts with sealing of a gap area 1 between two flanges 2, 3 for instance using a sealing tape 4 as is shown in figure 1. This sealing tape 4 is provided with two connections; one connection (not shown) for providing a supply channel for the protective filler material to be inserted in the gap area 1 through said sealing tape 4, and the other connection 5 for connecting a vacuum pump with the gap area 1 at a location which is preferably opposite to the supply channel for the protective filler material. Other locations may however also be employed. Preferably however the two connections for the vacuum pump and for the filler material are at an angle of approximately 180°.
Preferably the connection for the supply channel of the filler material is at the underside (which is therefore not visible in Figure 1), and the connection 5 for the vacuum pump is at the upper side of the gap area 1 between the flanges 2, 3.
Figure 2 shows that a sealing bag 6 is provided to cover the flanges 2, 3 with the connection 5 for the vacuum pump and the connection for the supply channel for the protective filler material; this sealing bag 6 is provided prior to operating the vacuum pump. Alternatives for the sealing bag may of course also be used. Through the sealing bag 6 the bolt connections 7 are visible that connect the two flanges 2, 3. The protective filler material is brought into the gap area 1 between the flanges 2, 3 so as to surround and protect the bolt connections 7 by operating the vacuum pump and continue its operation until the protective filler material begins to leave the gap area 1 through the connection 5 of the vacuum pump. At that time the vacuum pump can be shut off, and the connections of the vacuum pump and the channel for the supply of filler material are removed. If reguired manually additional protective filler material can then be applied at the location of the removed connections. By the application of the vacuum all gases and substances are removed rrom the sealed orr area, including the flanges and the holes for the bolt-nut connections, ensuring that after inserting the filler material all voids are filled with said filler material.
It is found that in a particular embodiment best results may be obtained by applying a polyurethane as the protective filler material. Suitably this polyurethane is combined with a harder, preferably in the ratio 5:1. After insertion of the protective filler material in the gap area of the flanges, said filler material is set for at least 20 hours, preferably 24 hours. Figure 3 provides a side view at the flanges 2, 3 with the gap area between the flanges filled with the set protective filler material 8 that provides corrosion protection to the bolts connecting the flanges 2, 3.
It is to be understood that the above description is merely intended to elucidate the invention as embodied by the appended claims without intent to limit the scope of protection of these claims to the provided example. The protective scope that merits the invention is solely determined by the appended claims which should be understood in their broadest interpretation .
