Description
Method for storing used painting material and vacuum wrapper device for packing used painting material.
The present invention relates to a method for storing used painting material, such as paint brushes and paint rollers, for reuse later. Further the invention relates to a vacuum wrapper device for packing used painting material according to said method.
It is common practice to clean and to store paint brushes in water or turpentine until the next painting job.
The quality of the brush will however deteriorate during storage. For instance, when stored in water, the hairs of the brush will tend to stand wide after such storage resulting in less optimal painting and high quality painting will be more time consuming. Paint brushes are therefore used for a shorter period than would be possible on basis of the original quality of the brush. The use of a large number of paint brushes and the longer time required for high quality painting will result in higher costs. Moreover the application of turpentine and water is environmentally unfriendly as the turpentine and water contaminated with paint will have to be disposed of.
The present invention intends to solve one or more of the problems as described above.
NL 1034229 discloses an apparatus and method in which the wet part of a paint brush is placed within a rigid and closable holder or container, is subsequently vacuumed.
US 5,806,704 relates to a domed vacuum lid for a rigid and round thermoplastic paint container. The wet paint brush can be suspended in the paint container from the domed lid.
The method and the vacuum wrapper device according to the invention are characterized by one or several of the appended claims.
The method includes the steps of providing a suitable shell around at least that part of the painting material that is soaked with wet paint, air-tight closing of the shell and making the shell airless by vacuum sucking, wherein the shell consists of an air-tight foil, for instance in the shape of a bag. In this way the brush is isolated from air and will not dry. Cleaning before storing is therefore not required. The brush will stay in good quality and the method according to the invention is environmentally friendly.
The foil may be closed by partly heating the foil. Moreover the foil may be a shrink wrapping. Application of a shrink wrapping combines, when the shrink wrapping is heated, two steps of the method according to the invention, a) making the shell airless and b) air-tight closing of the shell.
The vacuum wrapper device for packing used painting material according to the invention comprises wrapping means for putting and/or holding a shell embodied as an airtight foil around at least part of the painting material and means for vacuum sucking the airtight foil. The device may additionally be provided with closing means, such as sealing means. In addition the device may be provided with dispensing means for foil or bags.
The various aspects of the invention will now be described in more detail and will be elucidated, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows in
Figure 1, vacuum wrapper device for packing used painting material;
Figure 2, the vacuum wrapper device of Figure 1 with a paint brush inserted and a bag placed partly around the brush;
Figure 3, the vacuum wrapper device of Figure 2 in sealing position; and
Figure 4, the vacuum wrapper device of Figure 1 applied in combination with a container.
The vacuum wrapper device 1 for packing used painting material of Figure 1 is a manual version, which may easily be upgraded to an automatic version. The present manual embodiment is however very suitable for DIY application or for small painters. It does not require any external power connection and may therefore be used at any place. The vacuum wrapper device 1 is provided with a recess 2 in which a paint brush 3 may be placed. In Figure 2, a paint brush is placed in recess 2 and around the top part of the brush a bag 4 is placed. This top part is typically the part of the paint brush that gets soaked with paint, it is however in another configuration of the vacuum wrapper device very well possible to wrap the paint brush in full. The bag 4 is made out of a suitable air-tight foil. The bag 4 is placed by hand and air-tight secured to the vacuum wrapper device 1 by a contractile ring 5. This contractile ring 5 can be pushed against protrusion 6 of vacuum wrapper device 1, fixing the bag in between them. Alternatively for instance a simple tube clamp may be used to fix the bag. The recess 2 is connected to a vacuum pump via the passage 8. The vacuum pump 7 is manual operated by a handle 9. By pushing the handle several times back and forward the vacuum pump 7 will evacuate air via passage 8 and recess 2 out of the bag 4. The outside pressure will then firmly push the bag against paint brush 3. This is the situation of Figure 3. A sealer 10 is provided with a sealing ring 11, consisting of two half rings, which is pushed on the bag 4 at the level of the shaft 13 of the paint brush 3. The sealing ring 11 of sealer 10 is provided with heating shoes, powered by battery 12, that will seal the bag 4 air-tight around the shaft of the paint brush 3. In this way the soaked hairs of the brush are isolated from air, will not dry and accordingly will stay in good shape. Before starting the next painting job the bag 4 can easily be removed by breaking the seal and letting air in the bag.
In another configuration the bag may be provided with connecting means, for instance a valve which can be placed directly on protrusion 6, without intervention of a contractile ring . Preferably such valve is a one-way valve which automatically closes on disconnecting the bag from the vacuum wrapper device. In that configuration no further sealing equipment is required. Accordingly a more sophisticated bag may require a less sophisticated vacuum wrapper device, which may have the preference for certain applications or certain circumstances.
According to the invention the vacuum wrapper device may be provided with dispensing means for foil or bags.
The same or a similar vacuum wrapper device may also be applied for containers. In Figure 4 several paint brushes 3 are placed in container 14. Container 14 is provided with a cover 15. Cover 15 has a one-way valve 16. Vacuum wrapper device 1 is placed with its protrusion 6 on valve 16. By moving handle 9 back and forward pump 7 is operated and air is evacuated from the container 14.
To the person skilled in art it is obvious that the above given embodiments represent only a few of the many possible variations in which the method according to the invention may be performed and the vacuum wrapper device may be embodied. Therefore the embodiments given here must be understood as an elucidation to the appended claims without limiting the scope of the invention. Within the protective scope numerous variations are conceivable, which may include for example, the method wherein shrink wrapping is used. Shrink wrapping provides a simple way to implement the teaching of the invention. The paint brush is (partly) covered by shrink wrapping. By heating the shrink wrapping, for instance with a simple hairdryer, the air is pushes out and a air-tight shell is obtained.
