Presentation device for providing a three dimensional viewing experience
BACKGROUND
The invention relates to a presentation device for providing a three dimensional viewing experience to a 5 viewer, using a portable electronic screen display device. The invention further relates to a presentation assembly comprising such a presentation device, and a method for using such a device.
Portable electronic screen display devices, such 10 as touch screen tablets and smart phones, are typically used for presenting information and/or for playing games. A drawback of these conventional screen devices is that the information presented thereby is two-dimensional. Three dimensional portable display devices have been developed, 15 for instance making use of a lenticular effect, to provide a more immersive viewing and/or gaming experience without requiring additional viewing gear, such as polarized or shutter glasses, to be worn by a viewer. However, such three dimensional display devices are prohibitively 20 expensive for casual presentation and/or game purposes. It is an object of the present invention to provide a presentation device and method for providing a three dimensional viewing experience to a viewer using a portable 2 electronic screen display device.
5 SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
According to a first aspect, the present invention comprises a presentation device for providing a three dimensional viewing experience to a viewer using a 10 portable electronic screen display device having a two dimensional electronic display, said presentation device comprising: a frame and a semi transparent screen (e.g. a semi transparent and semi reflective screen) to be held at and angle to said electronic display by said frame, 15 wherein said semi transparent screen is adapted for at least partially reflecting visible light emitted by said electronic display to a side of said semi transparent screen facing said display device. In many households, a portable electronic display device is available for 20 displaying moving images, such that a display device together with a presentation device according to the present invention allows such moving images to be projected and overlain with 3D-props or objects located at a side of the semi transparent screen facing away from said 25 electronic display. The viewer, who is typically located at a side of the semi transparent screen facing towards the electronic display, sees the images projected by the electronic display on the semi transparent screen at a different depth than objects or figures on the other side 30 of the screen, which provides a three dimensional viewing effect to the viewer.
Preferably, the presentation device is a portable presentation device including its own power source, e.g. a smart phone or a tablet provided with a battery. More 35 preferably, the presentation device comprises only passive components such that it requires no external power source. Thus, the presentation device and portable electronic 3 display device may easily be carried to friends and family while in operation.
In an embodiment the presentation device further comprises a background panel, wherein said semi 5 transparent screen is arranged between said electronic display and said background panel for at least partially reflecting visible light emitted by said electronic display to a side of said semi transparent screen facing away from said background panel. The background panel is 10 typically decorated with figures which together with imaged projected onto the semi transparent screen provide a three dimensional viewing experience.
In an embodiment the frame is hingeably connected to said semi transparent screen and hingable between an 15 unfolded position for holding the semi transparent screen at an angle to the electronic display, and a folded position, in which said frame is substantially folded onto said semi transparent screen. Preferably, the background panel is hingable between a folded position in which it is 20 at an angle to the electronic display, and a folded position in which the background panel is substantially parallel to the semi transparent screen and/or to the frame. The frame, the background panel and the semi transparent screen preferably extend in substantially 25 parallel proximate planes and when folded. The device may thus be stored or mailed as a substantially flat package.
In an embodiment said presentation device is further provided with sidewalls to be arranged at a display side of said electronic display, for blocking light from 30 reaching the electronic display. The sidewalls to this end comprise a substantially non-transparent material. The sidewalls aid in preventing reflection of light in the electronic display from being projected onto the semi transparent screen. Preferably, the side walls also at 35 least partially prevent light other than light emitted by the electronic display from reaching the semi transparent screen. Thus, even relative low light images projected onto 4 the semi transparent screen by the electronic display remain clearly visible to a user.
In an embodiment, said sidewalls are hingably connected to said semi transparent screen and/or to said 5 frame. When one or more side walls are hingeably connected to the semi transparent screen, they may be arranged in an unfolded orientation substantially non parallel to the screen for blocking light as described above and/or for supporting said screen at an angle to the display device. 10 In a folded orientation the side walls are then preferably folded onto each other and/or the screen, such that they preferably extend substantially parallel to the screen. Likewise, when one or more side walls are hingably connected to the frame, they may block light from reaching 15 the semi transparent screen and/or support the screen at an angle to the electronic display.
In an embodiment the presentation device further comprises a game board having a substantially planar support surface, wherein said background panel is adapted 20 to extend from said game board substantially normal thereto, and wherein said semi transparent screen is adapted to be arranged substantially parallel to said background panel. The game board and the background panel are preferably foldable relative to each other between a 25 folded position in which they extend substantially parallel to each other, and an unfolded position in which the extend substantially normal to each other. By arranging props or objects on the game board between the background panel and the semi transparent screen, the perceived 3D viewing 30 experience is enhanced.
In an embodiment the game board is divided into two parts, and said semi transparent screen is adapted to be arranged perpendicular to said planar support surface and partially between said two parts.
35 In an embodiment the two parts each are open- box shaped such that when the two parts are placed abutting and with their open ends facing each other they form a box 5 for containing other parts of the presentation device such as the semi transparent screen, props, a holder for a electronic display device, and so on. One of the two parts may have outer dimensions which substantially fit inside 5 inner dimensions of the other of the two parts.
In an embodiment the two parts are hingeably connected to each other. When the two parts are in a position in which they form a substantially planar game board, i.e. when the two parts extend with their support 10 surfaces substantially in a common plane, the semi transparent screen can be inserted between said two parts and to be held in place thereby, e.g. by being clamped between side planes of the two parts.
In an embodiment the presentation device is 15 embodied as a foldable postcard. A person may thus send the presentation device as a postcard and provide a link to a video to be displayed on an electronic display device in cooperation with the presentation device to provide the recipient with a three dimensional viewing experience.
20 In an embodiment said presentation device is further provided with a dividing wall to be arranged extending from one edge of the electronic display to an opposite edge of the electronic display, for partitioning said electronic display into a first section for projecting 25 images onto said semi transparent screen and a second section not to be projected onto said semi transparent screen. The dividing wall preferably is an opaque wall, and is preferably thin and substantially planar. In this embodiment, the first section is used for projecting said 30 images on the semi transparent screen, while the second section, which is hidden from a viewing direction of the touch screen by the dividing wall, may be used for other purposes such as receiving input to the touch screen and/or displaying other information to another user. When the 35 device is used for game play, such other information may thus only be seen by one or more users, e.g. a quiz master, for whom the second portion is within their line of sight.
6
In an embodiment said frame, said semi transparent screen, said sidewalls and/or said dividing wall are foldably connected to each other and are oriented substantially parallel to each other when in a folded 5 position. When in the folded position, the device thus forms a compact package.
In an embodiment in which the electronic display comprises a touch screen, the presentation device further comprises one or more touch screen manipulators for 10 remotely manipulating said touch screen. Such manipulators are known in the art, and may for instance comprise a rod provided at an end with a conductive rubber portion. By moving the rod to touch a section of the touch screen, it is possible to provide input to the electronic display 15 device during display of the moving images. In a preferred embodiment, the second section is at a first side of the semi transparent screen, and the one or more touch screen manipulators are operable from the other side of the semi transparent screen.
20 In an embodiment the presentation device further comprises a substantially planar template with an opening of predefined dimensions, to be placed over said electronic display. When placed over the electronic display, e.g. when placed parallel to a proximate to said display, the 25 template thus limits the dimensions of the image than may be projected on the semi transparent screen to predefined dimensions, in particular when the position of the transparent screen relative to the display of the display device is substantially predetermined as well.
3 0 In an embodiment said frame and said background panel comprise or are formed of cardboard or paper. A light weight presentation device may thus be constructed using relatively cheap materials.
According to a second aspect the present 35 invention provides a method for displaying moving pictures using a presentation device as described herein said method comprising the steps of: arranging said presentation 7 device relative to said electronic display such that the semi transparent screen is at an angle to said electronic display; providing an input to said electronic display device; based on said input, controlling said electronic 5 display device to project moving images onto said semitransparent screen. De presentation device may thus be used interactively, e.g. in quizzes, games, magic tricks and the like. The step of controlling is typically performed by a processor of the electronic display device.
10 In an embodiment the method comprises a step of displaying one or more choices on said second portion of said screen, and said providing an input comprises manipulating said touch screen at position corresponding to said choice. E.g. a first viewer seated on one side of the 15 semi transparent screen and dividing wall can thus be provided with a three dimensional viewing experience, while a second viewer sees instructions or possible choices displayed on the second section and touches the second portion at a position based on the information displayed on 20 the second section and/or on the reactions of the first viewer .
In an embodiment said moving images are downloaded from a server, based on said input. A large number of moving images are thus available to the user 25 without requiring corresponding large amounts of memory in the electronic display device for storing the moving images associated with each possible input.
In an embodiment the method further comprises a step of recording an image or moving images and storing 30 them in a memory of said electronic screen device and/or uploading them to a server. For instance, a person using the electronic display device may record a movie and later project the recorded movie onto the semi transparent screen, preferably overlain with other pre-recorded movies. 35 In an embodiment the method comprises a step of selecting a position, scale and/or orientation in which to project said moving images onto said semi transparent 8 screen. It is thus possible to optimize the way in moving images are projected onto the semi transparent screen, which is particularly advantageous when the moving images were recorded by a user under circumstances that were not 5 optimized for the presentation device.
According to a third aspect, the present invention provides a presentation assembly, or game assembly, comprising a presentation device as described herein, and a medium or signal comprising electronic 10 display device readable instructions for performing any on of the methods as described herein.
In an embodiment the presentation assembly further comprises one or more props to be arranged between the background panel and the semi transparent screen.
15 According to a fourth aspect, the present invention provides a presentation device for providing a three dimensional viewing experience to a user using an electronic screen display device having a two dimensional electronic display, said presentation device comprising: 2 0 a frame and a semi transparent screen to be held at and angle to said electronic display by said frame and arranged between said electronic display and said background panel, wherein said semi transparent screen is adapted for at least partially reflecting visible light emitted by 25 said electronic display to a side of said transparent screen facing said electronic display.
The various aspects and features described and shown in the specification can be applied, individually, wherever possible. These individual aspects, in particular 30 the aspects and features described in the attached dependent claims, can be made subject of divisional patent applications .

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
Figures 1A and IB show an isometric view and a 20 side view of a presentation device 100 according to the present invention, for providing a three dimensional viewing experience to a viewer 10, using a portable electronic touch screen display device 400. The viewer provided with the three dimensional viewing experience has 25 a viewing direction along VI. The presentation device 100 comprises a cardboard frame 140 which supports thereon a semi transparent screen 110 at an angle a to a display screen 401,402 of said electronic touch display device 400. The semi transparent screen 110, which comprises a sheet of 30 semi transparent plastic, is held stretched by a cardboard support frame 111. The device further comprises side walls 123,124 hingably connected to the support frame 111 along respective fold lines 123,124. The side walls comprise an opaque material such that they limit the amount of light 35 incident on the display screen 401. Dividing wall 131, which also comprises an opaque material, divides the touch screen 401,402 into a first section 401 for projecting 10 images onto the semi transparent screen 110, and a second section 402, for displaying information which is not to be displayed on the semi transparent screen 110 and for receiving touch input thereon. Flap 133 ensures that 5 substantially no portion of the second section 402 is projected onto the semitransparent screen 110.
Visible light emitted by the first portion 401 is projected onto the semi transparent screen and reflected thereby towards the user, or viewer 10. The semi 10 transparent screen also lets through light reflected by props, or objects, 301,302,302 and by decorative image 202 on background panel 200. The objects 301,302,303 and the background panel 200 are arranged at different distances from the viewer 10, as is the semi transparent screen 110, 15 so that the viewer 10 perceives a depth effect in images displayed on the semi transparent screen 110. Sections 201 and 203 of the background panel 200 are is foldable onto each other along folding line 204 to reduce the volume spanned by the background panel when it is not in use.
2 0 The frame 140 is hingeably connected at hinge line 112 to the support frame 110 of the semi transparent screen 110. When in the unfolded position shown in figures 1A and IB, the semi transparent 110 screen is arranged between electronic display 401 and background panel 200.
25 The frame 140 comprises a support surface 143, for supporting thereon the electronic touch screen device, and two upstanding wall portions 141,142 for abutting edges of the touch screen device, such that the electronic touch screen device 400, in particular of the display 401,402 30 thereof, is easily aligned with the semi transparent screen 110 .
In figure IB the portable electronic touch screen device 400 is shown in dotted lines as it would not be visible through upstanding wall portion 141. Figure 1C 35 shows a top view of the presentation device of figures 1A and IB.
Figure 2 shows an isometric view of the 11 presentation device of figures 1A-1C, in a folded state, in which the device is substantially flat. In other words, in the folded state, sidewalls 121,122, support surface 142 of the frame 140 and the semi transparent screen 110 and 5 support frame 111 thereof, all extend in substantially parallel planes. In this state the presentation device forms a relatively compact package suitable for convenient storage or mailing.
Figures 3A and 3B schematically show an isometric 10 view and a side view respectively of another embodiment of the present invention, for use with a portable electronic display device such as a smart phone 600 (shown in dotted lines in figure 3B) . The smart phone 600 comprises an electronic display 601 facing a semi transparent screen 510 15 of the presentation device 500. The presentation device further comprises a frame 540 for holding the electronic display device 600 with its display 601 at an angle β relative to the semi transparent screen 510. A viewer would typically view the semi transparent screen 510 along 20 viewing direction V2, such that the viewer does not directly look at the display of the display device 600. The presentation device 500 comprises a game board having a substantially planar support surface 573,574, and further comprises a background panel 700 which, at least in the 25 open state of the game board shown, extends from said game board substantially normal thereto. The game board is divided into two parts 571,572 which are hingeably connected to each other by hinge 580. The semi transparent screen 510 is arranged substantially perpendicular to said 30 planar support surface 573,574 and, in the open state of the game board as shown, partially clamped between the two parts 571, 572. The two parts 571,572 are formed as open ended box shaped parts, having open respective side 575,576. When the two parts are hinged relative to each 35 other such that their open ends 575,576 face each other, the semi transparent screen 510, the frame 540 and/or any other parts, e.g. props 304,305 and/or opaque background 12 panel 700, may be stored in the volume of the closed box thus formed.
Figure 4 shows another embodiment of a presentation device 800 according to the present invention, 5 shown in a folded state for easy mailing thereof, e.g. as a postcard. The presentation device 800 comprises a support frame 811 holding stretched a semi transparent screen 810. The device further comprises opaque sidewalls 821,822, here shown in folded state, but which may be unfolded in a 10 manner similar to side walls 121 and 122 shown in figure 1A. The sidewalls 821,822 have a planar substantially trapezoid shape, and are hingably connected to the support frame 811 at respective fold lines 823,824. Thus the sidewalls, when unfolded and placed with their edges 15 825,826 on a display of an electronic display device, together with the support frame 811 form a frame for arranging the semi transparent screen at an angle to the display of said electronic display device. The presentation device for providing a viewer with a three dimensional 20 viewing experience can thus easily be sent by regular mail, while a link to moving images to be projected by the electronic display device can be printed or written on the presentation device.
Figure 5 shows a flow chart of a method for 25 displaying moving pictures using a presentation device as described herein. The flowchart shows the method steps of: - arranging said presentation device relative to said electronic display such that the semi transparent screen is at an angle to said electronic display (step 30 901), - providing an input to said electronic display device (step 902), based on said input, controlling said electronic display device to project moving images onto 35 said semi-transparent screen (step 903).
By performing this method, the presentation device can display different moving images based on the 13 input. The method and device are thus particularly suitable for playing interactive quizzes, games and the like.
It is to be understood that the above description is included to illustrate the operation of the preferred 5 embodiments and is not meant to limit the scope of the invention. From the above discussion, many variations will be apparent to one skilled in the art that would yet be encompassed by the spirit and scope of the present invention .
