Firebreak door
The invention relates to a firebreak door having a spring-loaded latch which is arranged with a fusible material 5 to retain the latch in a door release position at a first, relatively low temperature and which fusible material loses its retaining function and allows the spring-loaded latch to move from the door release position to a door lock position at a second, relatively high temperature, wherein the door 10 further has latch release means for manually moving the spring-loaded latch from the door lock position to the door release position.
Such a door is known from EP-A-0 '156 044. This known door is provided with a latch which is retained by a fusible 15 material in the door releasing position. With the latch in this position, the door is available for normal use without being hindered by the latch. When the fusible material is melted under the influence of, for instance, a relatively high temperature of a fire, the latch is automatically moved 20 by a spring to a locking position, for interlocking the door to a doorpost.
A further development from EP-A-0 156 044 is disclosed in NL-A-1022326 and the corresponding EP-B-1 588 004. According to NL-A-1022326 and the corresponding EP-B-1 588 25 004 a drawback of the door that is known from EP-A-0 156 044 is that the position of the unlocking means is not well defined during normal use of the door, which can lead to a user of the door becoming confused. It will for instance not be clear to him whether he should use the unlocking means for 30 opening and closing of the door. Furthermore, the user can bring the unlocking means into a position such that these means counteract or block an automatic movement of the latch, as a result of which the desired action of the latch is undone. Further, it is said that the unlocking means have no 35 useful function when the latch is still retained in the releasing position by the fusible material.
To resolve the problems of EP-A-0 156 044, NL-A- 2 0 0 6122, I » 2 1022326 and the corresponding EP-B-1 588 004 teach that the unlocking means are coupled in a substantially unmovable manner to the door by means of a disconnectable connection, said disconnectable connection being disconnected under the influ-5 ence of fire detecting means for bringing the unlocking means in a position in which they can operate the latch.
A drawback of NL-A-1022326 and the corresponding EP-B-1 588 004 is the need to apply said disconnectable connection. This makes manufacture of the fire door complicated, 10 costly, and prone to malfunctioning.
It is an object of the invention to improve the known firebreak door that is disclosed in NL-A-1022326 and the corresponding EP-B-1 588 004, and to propose a fire door which is less complicated, cheaper to manufacture, and reli-15 able.
NL-C-1 018 457 discloses a firebreak door according to the preamble, which is further embodied with latch release means that are connected to the spring-loaded latch with a fixed connection so as to cause that the latch release means 20 are movable in concert with the spring-loaded latch., wherein in the door release position of the spring-loaded latch said latch release means assume a fixed and immovable position in relation to the door without being fixed to said door.
According to the invention a firebreak door is pro-25 posed in accordance with one or more of the appended claims.
The firebreak door of the invention is embodied with the fixed connection comprising a rod positioned between the spring-loaded latch and the latch release means. This is a cost effective and very reliable construction. Further in the 30 door of the invention the latch release means are arranged to be movable in a direction traversely to the door, wherein same is provided with means for converting the movement of the latch release means in a corresponding movement of the rod that is positioned between the spring-loaded latch and 35 the latch release means. Suitably the means for converting the movement of the latch release means in a corresponding movement of the rod is embodied with a rack and pinion.
The door of the invention avoids any misunderstand- a * 3 ing relative to the operation and function of the unlocking means, due to their maintaining a fixed position in relation to the door and as a result of which the unlocking means do hardly suffer from wear and tear. In case of fire to door is 5 automatically locked by the latch and forms a fire retardant. Nevertheless the door can be opened if need be by the operation of the unlocking means to release the latch from the door locking position and move it-in the door release position. In this way the door of the invention performs all the 10 functions of the door known from NL-A-1022326 and the corresponding EP-B-1 588 004 yet with a simpler construction which is less costly and more reliable.
The invention will hereinafter be further elucidated with reference to a drawing of an exemplary embodiment which 15 is not limiting the appended claims.
In the drawing: -figure 1 provides a side sectional view of a firebreak door according to the invention with the door latch in the door release position; and 20 -figure 2 provides a side sectional view of the firebreak door according to figure 1 with the door latch in the door lock position.
Whenever in the figures the same reference numerals are applied,· these numerals refer to the same parts.
25 Referring both to figure 1 and figure 2 the firebreak door of the invention is indicated with reference numeral 1. This door 1 has a latch 2 which is loaded by a spring 3.
Figure 1 shows that the latch 2 is arranged with a 30 fusible material 4 to retain the latch 2 in a door release position at a first, relatively low temperature.
In figure 2 the situation is shown in which at a second, relatively high temperature for instance due to a fire, the fusible material 4 has lost its retaining function, 35 thus allowing the spring-loaded latch 2 to move from the door release position that is shown in figure 1, to a door lock position. This door lock position is provided by having the spring-loaded latch 2 move its head end 2' into a keeper in 4 J · the doorpost 5.
Further, both figure 1 and figure 2 show that the door 1 has latch release means 6 for manually moving the spring-loaded latch 2 from the door lock position of figure 2 5 to the door release position of figure 1. For this purpose the latch release means 6 are connected to the'spring-loaded latch 2 with a fixed connection 7 so as to cause that the latch release means 6 are movable in concert with the spring-loaded latch 2. The fixed connection 7 also secures that in 10 the door release position of the spring-loaded latch 2 as shown in figure 1, said latch release means 6 assume a fixed and immovable position in relation to the door 1 without however being fixed to said door 1. Advantageously the fixed connection 7 comprises for this purpose a rod 1' positioned 15 between the spring-loaded latch 2 and the latch release means 6 .
It is shown in figure 2 that the latch release means 6 is arranged to be movable in a direction traversely to the door 1 according to the arrow A, which movability is only 20 present in case the fusible material 4 has lost its retaining function due to a sufficiently high environmental temperature.
Appropriately there are means for converting the movement of the latch release means 6 in a corresponding 25 movement of the rod 1' that is positioned between the spring-loaded latch 2 and the latch release means 6, wherein the means for converting the movement of the latch release means 6 in a corresponding movement of the rod 7' are suitably embodied with a rack 8 and pinion 9.
