Description
Ceramic hollow fibre, more particularly fibre membrane for micro filtration, ultrafiltration and gas separation.
DESCRIPTION:
Field of the invention.
5
The invention relates to a ceramic hollow fibre, more particularly a fibre membrane for micro filtration, ultrafiltration and gas separation, comprising a cylinder having at least two channels extending in longitudinal direction of the fibre and which are disposed with a mutual spacing and are separated from each other by a wall which forms part of the 10 cylinder.
State of the art.
A fibre of this type is generally known. In the known fibre the bounding walls 15 of each channel are formed by thin walls of filter material and between and around these walls a highly porous material is disposed, that is to say, a material having large pores. In essence the cylinder is thus made of a highly porous material having hollow cylinder walls of small-pore filter material. Such a fibre has greater strength than a hollow one-channel fibre because it has a larger diameter and in cross section has a larger surface filled with material 20 than a one-channel fibre. Such a fibre still has the advantage of high flux and easy cleanability due to low support wall thickness. A disadvantage of this known fibre is, however, that it is relatively hard to manufacture and thus relatively expensive.
Summary of the invention.
25
It is an object of the invention to provide a fibre of the type defined in the opening paragraph which is strong and relatively simple to manufacture. For this purpose the fibre according to the invention is characterised in that the cylinder is formed from uniform filter material. As a consequence, the fibre according to the invention can be manufactured in 30 a simple manner.
2
For achieving sufficient filter capacity under normal operating conditions the smallest distance between a channel and the outside of the cylinder is less than 2000 pm.
Since the flow through the wall is determined by the size of the largest pores, preferably at least 90% of the pores of the filter material has a pore size of 2000 nm or less.
5 The cylinder preferably has three, four, five, six or seven channels. In the event of more channels which are uniformly distributed over the section of the fibre the distance from the fibre(s) disposed in or around the centre to the outside wall of the cylinder becomes too great, so that these fibres are less effective or not effective at all.
An embodiment of the fibre according to the invention is characterised in that 10 the cylinder has a cloverleaf-shaped cross section with a channel being present in each leafshaped portion. An advantage of this is that the wall thickness of the channels is the same over the greater part of the circumference of the channels, so that the filter capacity is larger than in a fibre having a circular cylindrical shape.
A further embodiment of the fibre according to the invention is characterised 15 in that the bounding walls of the channels and/or the outside of the cylinder are covered with a coating of which at least 90% of the pores has a pore size of 2000 nm or less.
Brief description of the drawings.
20 The following description relating to the appended drawings, the whole given by way of non-limiting example of the fibre according to the invention, will provide better understanding of how the invention can be realized, in which:
Fig. 1 shows a circular sectional view of a first embodiment of the fibre according to the invention; and 25 Fig. 2 shows a cloverleaf-shaped sectional view of a second embodiment of the fibre according to the invention.
Detailed description of the drawings.
30 Fig. 1 shows a sectional view of a first embodiment of the fibre according to the invention. This fibre 1 comprises a cylinder 3 of a circular section and has three channels 5 extending in longitudinal direction of the fibre and which are present with a mutual spacing. The cylinder 3 is formed from a uniform filter material with at least 90% of the pores of the filter material having a pore size of 2000 nm or less.
3
The smallest distance 7 between a channel 5 and the outside 9 of the cylinder 3 is less than 2000 pm. Also the smallest mutual distance 11 between the channels 5 is less than 2000 pm.
In Fig. 2 is shown a sectional view of a second embodiment of the fibre 5 according to the invention. This fibre 13 also has three channels 15, but the section of the cylinder 17 of this fibre is cloverleaf-shaped here with a channel 15 being present in each cloverleaf portion 19. The wall thickness 21 of the channels 15 is the same over the greater part of the circumference of the channels, so that the filter capacity is larger than in a fibre having a circular cylindrical shape.
10 Albeit the invention has been described in the foregoing based on the drawing figures, it should be observed that the invention is not by any manner or means restricted to the embodiment shown in the drawing figures. The invention also extends to all embodiments deviating from the embodiment shown in the drawing figures within the spirit and scope defined by the claims. For example, the bounding walls of the channels and/or the outside of 15 the filter may be covered with a coating.
