Description
The-conventional machine screw- attached button.
The utility invention and novelty is to use a conventional machine screw as used in the automotive and machine shop industry and more, as an improvement to attach buttons for use in combination with a buttonhole, especially in the textile industry to fasten any kind or type of button, instead of sewing, riveting or by use of a two part screw button, in a fast and economic way. 'The-conventional machine screw- attached button" is designed and comprising of a one piece button, but instead to attach it by sewing with a needle and thread, which are not part of the button, it utilizes a bolt and locknut, which are not part of the button, to fasten the button. With special view on the opportunity that the machine screw provide, by using a locknut to resist loosening of the button. While it is a much stronger fastening method then sewed buttons. And it is also easy to remove and reattach. The button is designed with one hole, instead of 2 or 4 as the regular sewed button has. Said bolt and nut attaches any button with one hole in the center to fabric, leather or more. From a synthetic button to metal, plastic, synthetic fiber or synthetic polymer, natural and more and or metal trimming for garments and leather ware in clothing and fashion design and the like. Due to all the possible combinations with the machine screw and its use as a fastener for everything nowadays, with this invention it is even easy to form, create, and improve a fabric covered button and or an easy to attach upholstery button, without the use of a button press machine or a new die. A fabric covered button, where with the use of a precut piece of fabric, it is possible to cover the button with said piece of fabric permanently. All of previous and existing fabric covered and upholstery buttons are based on a snap on system of a shell and disc or a shell to engage in one way or the other to a stem. But none before, use a bolt and nut as this invention, which just take advantage of the same bolt that attach the button to fabric, with an extra nut and washer to hold said fabric to cover the button, after said fabric is pushed from the front to the back of the button, and tightening the nut to press the washer against the button with the fabric between washer and button {see Fig. 8). Since "The-conventional machine screw- attached button" is reattach able it is also easy to use as attach method for expensive precious metal buttons for example, using the same expensive buttons on different dresses. It can be attached by any type, size and material of bolt and locknut, to resist loosening. Metric or imperial as long as it fits the button properly. It is not a button assembly, not a two piece screw button, not a two screw on part button and has not an upper and lower threaded part. Any button can be easily and firmly attached with a machine screw. This action is as simple as starting and tightening a bolt and nut. Any button can be fastened easy to fabric or leather by a flat head bolt for better comfort, and a locknut, in factories with a short action by the seamstress themselves, characterized with only 1½ to 3 turns or more if needed without damaging fabrics, due to the use of the locknut. And exercises more than enough power and pressure needed to attach a button. Using a bigger diameter (2, 3,4mm or bigger if wanted) is less chance of damage to the fabric in extreme use and condition (jeans, work shirts, work pants, and jackets). While smaller diameters (1 or 2mm) are suitable for shirts, skirts and dresses. Length of bolt depends on thickness of fabric. 'The-conventional machine screw- attached button" can easily be attached with a simple special hand held tool that holds button, and a driver to screw bolt on nut. Identical pressure for all attached buttons in factories if desired can be done with the use of a torque wrench screwdriver. No hold ups and time lost in factories due to sending all ready sewed pieces to one place and waiting for riveting, snap on or hammering tack buttons. And no expensive sewing machines or riveting machines and equipment needed. For easy application, a metal plate with the proper drive type can be attached to the sewing machine tables, in factories, so that the seamstress herself can hold the bolt, nut or button that is already passed through the correspondent hole for the button and tighten the nut with a conventional tool, as seen in example of Fig. 11. The shape of button (1) is molded into the metal plate (2), to fit in snugly. While the metal plate has also a pin sticking out to correspond with the hole in the button, in such way that bolt and nut can be tighten while button stay in one place. Different ways can be created to hold the button for each design of button, whether it is a rustic or elegance designed button or to adapt at the type of drive for each specific design. Making it easy to secure the button and then tighten the nut after they finished sewing each piece. For this reason this action should take less than the other attachment methods to complete. And by using a pointed bolt instead, in some cases, can pass the bolt through the fabric without having to punch a hole in advance. For strengthening and or easy attaching technique and or different variations model, any combination of bolt, flat head bolt, truss head bolt, lockthread bolt, socket button head screw, faceplate button, pan head screw, spacer washer, washer, spacer, fender washer (as button), metal button, synthetic button, caged nut, standoff spacer, propel nut, stamped nut, round base weld nut, end nut, locknut, 2-way reversible lock nuts and more can be used. All off the above mentioned can be used in metal or synthetic form. Due to mass production, for the automotive and aeronautical industry, agricultural machinery, household appliances, medical equipment, household and garden supplies, furniture industry, computers and electronics, heavy and railway equipment, machine shop industry and more, machine screws are low in price, in opposite of the two parts button which is produced only for the textile industry. Utilizing the machine screw success in above mentioned industries, for the garment industry. While there is a wide variety of types, sizes and shapes, quality, material, diameter and drive types on the market available, it is easy to create hundreds of different attach styles with the machine screw. Whether it is a rustic or elegant design it still can be secure and strong. "The-conventional machine screw- attached button" invention is a one piece button to attach with a conventional bolt and nut (locknut), therefore not comparable with the following inventions. Which are complete two part buttons, and are not attached by a conventional machine screw bolt and nut. And since none of them are attached by a conventional bolt and nut, they cannot offer the advantage of using simple low cost tools usually operated by hand for tightening bolts and nuts, to ensure a quick and easy strong attachment of buttons in factories.
1. DE 22 59 617 Al (K.R. PAZDERA) June 12,1974 (1974-06-12) (Page 1. Description; describes it as a riveting and screwed button. Means, that this invention's final process is by riveting. It is not attached with a conventional machine screw bolt and locknut. Page 2. Needs nine turns to complete the action. Disadvantage of this invention's two parts screw button which has to use its female part instead of a locknut. Against 1½ to 3 turns of 'The conventional machine screw-attached button", using a locknut to resist loosening. Page 5. Claims it as an upper and lower screw part. Two parts button. This invention does not claim to be a one piece button, to be attached with a conventional bolt and locknut.
2. DE 43 35 349 Al (P. Herzog; R. Herzog) April 20,1995 (1995-04-20)
Column 1, line 32-36. A variable adjustable screw cap. This invention is to adjust the waistband. Not to attach a button to use in combination with one buttonhole. Column 1 line 37-38. This invention consists of two parts. It is not a one part button to be attached with bolt and locknut. Column 1 line 65. Claims; It is a variable adjustable screw lock. To adjust the Waistband. This invention is not to attach a button to use with one buttonhole. Column 2 line 16-17. By screwing the two screw halfs. This invention is a two part screw button. It is not a one part button to be attached with bolt and locknut.
3. GB 02080 A.A.D. 1909 (J. GÖBEL) November 25,1909 (1909-11-25) (Page 1, line 5-14. A two-part button. One female threaded part and one male threaded part to fit into the female threaded part. Page 1, line 36-39. A two part button. This invention is a two part button, that has to use its female part instead of a locknut, and not a one part button attached with a conventional bolt and locknut.
4. DE 30 06 891A1 (Η. KAATZ) September 10,1981 (1981-09-10)
Description; Two parts that screw into each other. Claims 1 and 2. Composition of two screws on parts. Claims to be comprising of two parts and has to be attached with its female counter part instead of a locknut. This invention is not a one piece button, to be attached with a conventional bolt and locknut. (Fig 3. Upper part. Fig 4. Lower part). Clearly seen as two screws on parts. Furthermore it claims to have its functional composition only by the two screw on parts. And only made of metal.
5. US 2012/096683 Al (T. SURIANO) April 26, 2012 (2012-04-26)
Abstract: This invention is not to attach buttons to fabric. It is a two piece button and needs two buttonholes alignable to fasten and secure the apparel. See Fig 4,5 and 6. Indicates that it uses two button holes to be aligned together. Not to permanently attach a button to garment, to use with one buttonhole. Paragraph 0003. Two-piece button. Paragraph 0007. Two-piece button. Paragraph 0008. Two-piece button. Paragraph 0010. Two-piece button. Paragraph 0011. Two-piece button. Paragraph 0012. Two-piece button. Paragraph 0018. Button assembly. Paragraph 0020. Is of two piece construction. Shows clearly that this invention is a two piece button. (Paragraph 0021. Perpendicular shaft 28 which is externally threaded to be received in the threaded bore 20 of backing member). This invention is a two piece button, not attached by a conventional bolt and locknut.
While only two of the above mentioned previous inventions are to attach buttons to garments for use with a buttonhole. All the five inventions consist of a two part button. And since not attached by a conventional bolt and nut, but with a male and female part, they do not comprise of a locknut to resist loosening of the button. Obviously showing, that there is still a search for a better solution to attach buttons. With "The-conventional machine screw-attached button" buttons can be attached fast and economical due to the low price of screws because of the mass production of this fastening device. And creating the possibility for a wide variety of types and combinations to fasten a button that the machine screw offers, as a fastening device. Including the unique use of a locknut, that cannot be applied by the other above mentioned inventions. And which is essential to resist loosening and be able to stay fixed with only VA to 3 turns when tightened.
Following is the description of the drawings of basic combinations, attaching techniques and different variations possible to attach the button.
FIG. 1 "The conventional machine screw attached button" is characterized and comprising a button (3) with one hole in the center. In such a way that said button is attached from the back with a flat head bolt (1), that is first passed through a premade hole in the fabric (2), and is fasten in the front with a locknut (4) so that the fabric remains secured between the button and the bolt head. Hereafter bolt and nut can be tightened with simple and low-cost hand tools, which are normally used to tighten screws, without damaging the fabric, with only llAto 3 turns. If some space is needed between button and fabric for the buttonhole to fit adequate, it can be obtained by adding a spacer or a washer (FIG. 2 spacer 3) between the button and fabric to create a shank. In some cases with a thin fabric, it is possible to use a pointed flat head bolt to go through the fabric without a pre punched hole. Leaving some play when tightening the nut will create a spinning button.
FIG. 3, this embodiment comprising of a button (3) with a caged nut (4) and one hole in the back and center of the button. The cage is made in the button by pressing with a die in the button, with the same form of the nut so that it fits snugly in the cage. In such way that the locknut is first placed and stays tight and hidden in the cage of the button and attached from the back with a flat head bolt (1) that is first passed through a premade hole in the fabric (2) and is fasten to the caged locknut (4) of the button, so that the fabric remains secured between the button and the bolt head. The cage performs also as a shank between button and fabric to fit the buttonhole adequately.
FIG. 4, this embodiment comprising of a button (3) made as a conventional round base weld nut. A round base weld nut has a base in the form of a button, and a round locknut (4) welded in the center of the base. In such way that the button {3) can be attached from the back with a flat head bolt {1) that is first passed through a premade hole in the fabric {2) and is fasten to the locknut (4) that is already welded to the button, so that the fabric remains secured between the welded nut and the bolt head. The welded nut performs also as a shank between button and fabric to fit the buttonhole adequately.
FIG. 5, in another embodiment 'The conventional machine screw attached button" shows a solution for fast and economical way to attach a synthetic dome button (4) (also called shank button). Taking advantage of its body to thread it with a conventional thread in the center back (3) of the button and attach it with a conventional flat head bolt (1) to fabric (2). This embodiment is also possible for a precious metal dome button.
FIG. 6, in this other embodiment of a synthetic dome button (4), a round base weld nut with holes (3) for plastic, designed especially for this type of application, is molded into a dome button in the center back of the button. In such way that the button can be attached with a conventional flat head bolt (1) to fabric (2), while the piece of the round base weld nut that is sticking out, performs as a shank between button and fabric to fit the buttonhole adequately.
FIG. 7, another embodiment of a dome button (2) with a hole (1) in the center front of the button in such way that a bolt can pass through the button from the front and the bolts head is locked in the back of the button (caged bolt), allowing only the threaded (3) part of the bolt to remain outside in the back of the button. In such way that the button can be attached with a locknut (5) to fabric (4). To keep the dome button's beauty and elegance, plug (6) fits in hole (1) to cover the hole. In all embodiments, bolts and nuts can be used in opposite way.
FIG. 8, in another embodiment 'The conventional machine screw attached button" is used to create a fabric covered shank button (2). With a caged bolt (3) or with a molded or welded bolt (3) in the center back of the button, while only the threaded part of the bolt remains outside of the button. Button can be only a shell. Washer (4) can hold the fabric (1) securely to the back of the button, after said precut piece of fabric is pushed firmly from the front to the back of the button, folded over of the edge in the back which is furnished with little teeth to help hold the fabric in the right position. Pressing washer (4) against, and into the edge of the button, holding the fabric in between and tightening nut (5) to permanently secure the fabric and covering the button. Without the use of a button press machine. Figure 10 show specific the edge (9) where washer (4) fits and hold fabric firmly. With little teeth on the back edge of the button will hold the fabric more securely. Hereafter the fabric covered button can be attached to fabric (6) passing the remaining of the bolt through the premade hole in the fabric and tighten with locknut (7). In this case nut (5) will also function as a shank to fit the button hole adequately. With no chance of pop out, the button is easy to remove, re-cover with fabric and reattach.
FIG. 9, in this embodiment, of a fabric covered upholstery button, comprising of the same button as described under "fabric covered shank button" with a longer and pointed bolt. In such way that after button is covered with fabric, and nut (5) is replaced with a flat shaft nut, there is still the portion of the pointed bolt sticking out. Passing the pointed bolt through cushion (6) and attach said button with washer (7) and locknut (8). A piece of heavy cardboard can be added between washer (7) and cushion (6). By tightening or loosening locknut (8) the depth of the button in the cushion can be adjusted instead of doing it with needle and heavy twine with a knot.
